  • Yes, a great (proposed) stadium considering their average gate is currently 1,800.

Methinks it will all end in tears .....

Go Deon (and Tony) - take the money and run.

    I would.
  • That website is well fecked up, the league table dont make any sense what so ever.

If you click on the full table it does. Some teams just haven't had their 20th game updated.
  • Chris_from_Sidcup; Thanks mate, I knew it was somewhere and something like that. These Asian clubs are all about the money. Not shocked whatsoever that Burton has gone. Just need to concentrate on getting players in rather than players leaving now. Starting with Reidy - hopefully.
  • Good luck to Deon, was one of our best players last season and we missed him when not in the side. Hope Parky can find a suitable replacement, Bauza could be an option but we maybe need someone else aswell.

Can understand why he may be attracted by the money, although he has probably earned a fair bit of money out of football and 4-6k a week is an excellent wage- cannot fault him for wanting one last big paycheck especially with a family to support and the need for some security when in 2-3 years he could be out of a job.
  • Good luck to Deon, he gave his best & played most the season with a hernia.

You have to say as Burton & his agent were asking for a deal some months ago & we didn't offer one (we couldn't sensibly without knowing what division we 'd be in ), you can't blame them for looking around. In fact as Oggy said we told them to see what was on offer.

We gambled that he wouldn't come up with a better offer than ours and in that reagrd, the gamble didn't come off.

However, if we decided the maximum wages we were going to offer Burton, (knowing that he presumably needs a hernia operation), then we were right not to get into a bidding war, that we couldn't afford, for an old player, that isn't fully fit.

Once again though, good luck Deon, a decent footballer that gave his best.
  • Don't blame him for going for the money at his age and wish him well.

Tbh I didn't rate him as highly as most Charlton fans. I don't doubt his efforts or even that he was playing with an injury but if you take away the penalties he scored his goals total was not very good.
  • From skysports link:
Burton has opted to move on after growing tired of waiting on Charlton Athletic, with whom he ended the 2009/10 campaign, to offer him fresh terms.

His agent, Darryl Powell, added: "We waited on Charlton but a deal failed to materialise.

"We were impressed by the ambition (of Gabala) after speaking to them and they have shown their ambition by getting Tony as manager.

"This is a new and exciting experience for Deon."

    Sums it up for me.

Set up a lot of goals, something like 10 assists to go with his 14 goals, that's pretty decent even if there were several penalties. That's without mentioning any goals he was involved in.

Some way off being the best striker in the league, but a good footballer and generally did his job for the team well.

  • After some of the non-performing dross that has graced our forward line over the last few years I'd have thought that most Charlton fans would appreciate a player who ran and gave it his best shot. Bear in mind that he arrived on a free as a replacement for Varney who had to be sold to pay off Pardew. Given that we sold Varney and paid nothing for him I reckon we got the better end of that deal.

Last season he played with a hernia problem for much of the season, yet never went missing. Does anyone think that Marcus Bent or JFH would played on while carrying an injury? And he was often the only striker in a 4-5-1 formation and especially early on made that formation work not just by scoring goals and a healthy number of assists but had a lot of indirect influence on our play by bringing into the action (ften very unselfishly) other players. Once the 4-5-1 strategy was sussed out he struggled and with the injury and a lack of a decent strike partner meant that he became easier to mark out of games. Overall in the context of the season he was a success.

A shame he won't be back next year and I can appreciate that he has had to make a tough decision, but a couple of seasons playing for this club sounds a great way to end a career, at least if it works out.

That's a spot on summing up, Scoham. Well put.

Whilst I admire the way he has turned his life around, he is not a manager in a million years, is he?

Unlike English Football which has no regard for money

"And a nice little earner for me as his agent..."

Would imagine it would be long odds on him being out there for two years - and even longer for Tony Adams to last that long - but can understand why he has taken the option of what must be a good contract.

Could never fault his effort for us and while he may not have been prolific, we really missed his hold up play when he was injured.
  • Deon Burton Update - from the Gabala Website

The money must be good (very, very good). The gate was "nearly 1,500".

Persistence did not help Gabala FC to win.

Second week of Azerbaijan Premier League, Gabala FC played with "Neftchi" FC. Our team tried to win and to get his first victory in this season, playing with "flagman". Head Coach of Gabala FC, Tony Adams's considered "start eleven" against "Negtchi" FC was following:

Pavel Dorosevs, Sergey Sokolov, Ljuba Baranin, Milan Antic, Razvan Tarlea, Abdoul Kader Camara, Terry Cooke, Nodar Mammadov, Aris Isayev, Bruno Dos Anjos, Deon Burton.

Inspired by fans, our team started with actively in their native stadium. First minutes, resistance that we showed against opponents, gave us hope for victory. But, "Neftchi" changed next flow of the game. "Flagman" brought first dangerous episode.

"Neftchi"'s captain, Rail Malikov was very close to first goal with his head stroke. Gabala FC's reply was very quick too. 5 minutes later, Sergey Sokolov missed opportunity the most dangerous goal position of first 45 minutes. Until interval, Rashad Abdullayev disturbed our goalkeeper, Pavel Dorosevs two times but he realized his wish in second 45 minutes. Rashad Abdullayev scored a goal from 25 m in 69th minutes to the goal corner.

Gabala made some activities to score and made some dangerous positions but that was impossible to goal. Instead of it, "Neftchi" raised the difference score using opposite attack (0:2). In spite of defeat, our team performed hopefully. We trust Gabala FC victories after its new transfers adopt the team.

Thus, Gabala FC hopes to win "Baku" FC after losing 2 times consistently. Tarzin Cahangirov, student of Gabala Football Academy captivated people as the best football player in the game. The most active player in second 45 minutes gave hope to us.

Head coach, Tony Adams makes him alike with Frank Lempard and we are sure that he will realize our wishes in the future.

There were nearly 1,500 fans watching game in Gabala's substitutive stadium.
  • Tony Adams is still a managerial genius then. Gabala are bottom of the table, played 3, lost 3.
Burton has scored their only goal of the season so far though.
  • Im not surprised they lost if the opponents almost scored with a "head stroke"

    I love online translators :-)
  • Frank Lempard is decent
  • Terry Cooke came through the Man United youth system with Beckham, Scholes & the Nevilles I think

  • playing in front of 1500 fans - and he didn't go there for the money...............right !

if it doesn't prick your conscience then fair do's.......but I couldn't do it.
  • why shouldnt deon get a last pay day

he aint going to say it out loud but we all know its true and i dont hold it against him

    Agree.

He hasn't done the dirty on any one or broke any promises just gone to the best paying job he could find.

    Good luck to him.
  • The largest transfer fee in that leagues history is something like 260k yet Adams is on a £1m a year contract.

Safe to say the club has money so good luck Deon, soak it up while you can

I can imagine him retiring to a beach shack in Jamaica and running a sports bar in a few years
  • Real shame we never offered him a contract. Maybe we were worried about the hernia, maybe we needed to get cheaper players in. Shame though because he was really good last year.
  • Yep, good luck Deon, you did well for us.

Deon scored two penalties for Gabala in their 4-0 win over Simurg. They're now fifth in the league behing Inter. Not bad considering they lost their first three games.
  • funnily enough I checked them out the other day on an app I have

They are 4th now - behind the powerhouses Khazar Lankaran, Neftchiu and AZAL (who they play on Sunday)

Neon Deon has 7 in 16 games (that's 7 of the teams 17 goals) but they do have the tightest defence (that was likely to happen with Eeyore in charge wasn't it)
  • Strange, i was going to look up how he was getting on earlier but the search wouldn't work.
  • Pleased he is doing well but can't help think he is wasted out there. Last season he looked one of the better all round strikers in the division and this when carrying an injury for most of the season. Think we have massively missed his intelligence and link up play this season especially at home.

Still nice pay day for Deon.
