[cite]Posted By: LargeAddick[/cite]Let a good young keeper go for nought
Why do you criticise that, Large .......?
The player was out of contract, he was offered another ...... but chose not to accept.
Then he accepted Motherwell's offer. Randolph's own decisions.
Nothing the club could do about it, nothing at all - because Randolph was a free agent.
And because of Randolph's decision to move to Scotland, no payment of 'young player delevopment fee' is payable.

yep, sell our best two players and our most promosing youngster for ages for a combined fees of 3.5m. Let a good young keeper go for nought, let Burton and Sam walk for nothing without offering a contract, and not yet offer Basey a contract etc etc. Spend nothing on fees and resign players on lesser wages and sign other inferior players. You're right they are doing their bit.
If you don't agree then the alternative is that it's Parky fault for not keeping us up and then not getting us up. If you disagree with that then you can't have it both ways.[/quote]
Think that is tottaly unfair. You have to be a realist and understand the club needed those funds to get through the season, so actually selling those players does give us our best shot because otherwise we would be bust and out of the league altogether. I am pretty sure we offered Randolph a contract - he chose to leave. Good luck to him - but likewise you can't blame the club for his decision to go elsewhere.
Burton, IMO, is past it and we can hopefully do better. Think he will pick up injuries this season and second half of last season he was either injured or ineffectual. Sam was never going to stay - wanted to play at a higher level to improve his international chances said his agent - again not the clubs fault. As for Basey, with a small budget you have to spend it wisely. If he really does have no contract offer from us but 6 other clubs chasing him and two that would "take him tomorrow" as was said elsewhere then why is he still here? Maybe we have offered him something (or promised we will).
As for inferior players...Doherty is better than S Sodje, Jackson was very good for us last season. McCormack - i doubt any of us really know.
Give it time mate, no point worrying till kick off when we know the full squad...still another 7 players to come in yet!
Agree with Clem and Oggy. Very important signature this one. I voted for Dailly as POTY and he is exactly what the team and dressing room this year. If he performs as well this time around then I can't wait to see the performances of the player who takes his POTY crown. Well done Parky.

The good thing is that the old charlton is BACK !! Shame it has taken us a complete "muck up with the money spent" and wrong managers. I feel we are now going in the right decision. Onwards and Upwards.
Agreed. Although some of the departures have been sad, in some ways its nice to be shedding the 'premiership hangover' players in order to take stock and only rebuild what we need.
Good solid experience in the back - a bit of service for whatever inexperienced but hopefully fast young striker we get in / bring up through the ranks. Look at the cost -we've spent the last few years throwing money around trying to catch the next Bent and it's all come to League One.
I think PP has it right and I think he inherited a lot of shit and this to my mind is a realistic strategy and probably more than we could reasonably have expected.
Very happy with Dailly re-signing. Should definitely captain next season imo. Slightly worried about him and Doc as centre backs, due to a lack of pace, but on the bright side we aren't playing Millwall this year, so he can't have a shocker against them again!

Best post I've seen on here for a while. They say recessions are the time for innovation, and we're going through 1 ourselves. We're having to cut our cloth, but we are getting players in who are more suited to this league, and who actually want to be here.
As for Large, have you not realised where we are?
Find me a team in this league who has made 4 better signings this summer, and for nothing, than Jackson, Doherty, McCormack and Dailly. And possibly Bauza (who looks good so far) and Reid, plus six or whatever it is more. There are still holes in the squad but I certainly didn't expect our signings this summer to be of that quality. We've got good money for Richardson and Bailey, though of course they are good players who we will miss (as otherwise no-one would want to pay the money they did.) We haven't got a sugar daddy like Southampton, and so it's time we acted like our standing in the football world, which, as depressing as it is, is a League 1 club. The club as a whole is consolidating and making us suitable for our surroundings, and that means getting rid of the big earners and getting a team suitable for this league, not the one above it. We could be down here a while, and I certainly wouldn't want our dramatic fall of recent years to extend any further.
Fair play to Parky, I can't argue with any of his signings since he's been in charge. They've all been brought in with a specific role in mind, even if they have only been for the short term. Even McKenzie, who ultiately was a failure, was unlucky with injuries but was still only a year's contract. one out of 20 or so signings being a failure. Not a bad track record.
Parky certainly hasn't lumbered us with a massive Pardew-sized turd a la Moataukil/Sinclair/McLeod/Gray, which sucks money out of the club for years in the future.

Needs must and it doesn't always have to be about blame Large. Yes, they have made some mistakes, but it hasn't stopped them "doing their bit" to keep us competitive.
I just made the point that they are trying their best to give it a real go again, it would be so easy for them just to put a squad together that allows the club to operate closer to break even. The signings of late, suggest that they are not going that far and in fact are trying their hardest to put out an XI that will challenge again this season.
Sell our best two players ? - yes to provide the necessary funds to "give us a real shot at doing well this season" £3.5m is good business in the current climate.
To stop Burton and Sam walking for nothing, we would have had to offer them at least the same contracts that they were on - well would you ?
Basey contract ? why if he is not part of the plans ? sorry but now isn't a time for sentiment. Maybe if he does better in pre-season he'll get one.
who else is spending money they haven't got on fees ? the players we are signing will "give us a real shot at doing well this season"
They are managing the situation as best as they can as is Parky and it looks like they will provide us with a squad that gives us a real shot at it, not sure there were too many (myself included) who thought they were in a position to do that, at the time the Richardson sale news broke last week.
Just trying to picture a back four of Fortune, Dailly, Doherty and Jackson! You can't beat that line up for experience and the goals against column should get too much of a battering.
I don't believe Parky is tempted to start with a 3-5-2, NLA.
It's a largely outdated formation these days ..... and easy to exploit the space behind the wingback, despite the extra CB who should in theory cover.
I know Paul Tidsdale used it for Exeter's home matches, but I never heard of other teams playing it?.
Otherwise, you'll generally only see it when teams are a goal down and desperately chasing the game in the last 10 minutes.
And that in itself is a high risk strategy, as it's so easy to get caught on the counter.
No1in South London said 'Basey contract ? why if he is not part of the plans ? sorry but now isn't a time for sentiment. Maybe if he does better in pre-season he'll get one.'
the question is why isn't he part of the plans? He is good enough and should be given a contract. And does better ? What, better then he did when he was out injured last season after being knobbled at Bristol Rovers ? We have got to start giving the youngsters their chance. Otherwise the alternative is Dailly on a years contract, replace him next season with another on a years contract, then replace them etc (Dailly used as an example). Same with Solly. I bet Parky brings in another RB, yep we need one, but proceeds to play him ahead of Solly. Why? Our youngsters are not going to get any better unless they PLAY. All the signings so far I am very happy with bar one and that's McCormack. We didn't need him as Stavrinou is more than capable. I just think Parky is covering his back by not giving the kids a chance. Shelvey last season was a case in point. I'll reckon that he'll let Basey go this season, won't play Solly enough and he'll go next summer. What is the point of a youth policy if you don't give the best one's a chance ? Solly, Basey and Stavrinou are all good enough to play 1st team football at at least League 1 level. This ain't the PL.
Other criticism of my post I fully accept as maybe I didn't put my point across as well as I wanted.
[cite]Posted By: LargeAddick[/cite]I just think Parky is covering his back by not giving the kids a chance.
I just think Parky is trying to give this season his best shot, despite losing several of his best players - and going for promotion!
He's part way through building a new team and so far signed not only quality players for this league ....... but players with the right experience, character and determination in the right blend.
And McCormack has evidently been signed to provide that bit of backbone, grit and fight in midfield that we've lacked during the past few seasons. Wasn't it Lawrie McMenemy who said, every team needs 2 roadsweepers?
Well, there you go, Large. That's McCormacks role.
McCormack from what I've seen will make mistakes and be a bit frustrating at times, but he could be important at times if we're battling in a game for a point or 3, he'll offer something very different to Racon. Surely more physical than Stavrinou which we'll need at times.
It would be great to see the young players break through, but we need experience ideally in every position. Solly only missed out on a run in the team through injury last season. Basey was getting a run again until an injury ended it. Stavrinou has never played a league game above the BSP, can't say he's League One standard yet, especially in a key position.
After turning Wagstaff around I think Parky will have a good idea about how ready they all are and how much they should play next season. Of course they have to play to get better, but if we really are aiming for promotion I can understand none of them starting the season as first choice.
Thought Dailly was superb overall last season (a few dodgy moments - mainly against Millwall as predicted by the Spanners) and was the fittest bloke in a red shirt after 120 mins against Swindon
amazing effort given his age and the short recovery period after the first leg
Personally, whenever I've seen him, I've thought stav has always looked like he couldn't physically impose himself on a game. Good on the ball but not gonna ruffle any feathers, McCormack will do that.

Dailly is really not that slow for his age. Let's get Fortune in and play him right back :)
As for Dailly that's 1
*holds up 1 finger yul brener style*
Now for the other 7
Can't pretend I understand Henry but I probably agree ;0)
Navek Yllek is a bit of a backward journalist then.

jackson will play in midfield
3 at the back this season
5 in mid
2 upfront
Pardon? Don;t understand...
