[cite]Posted By: Barn Door Varney[/cite]I've often thought how different his Charlton career could have been if he had scored the one on one he had against palace in his first season.

was just thinking the same thing. Never seem to have any confidence and maybe that would have given it to him.

If one miss is all it takes to shatter his confidence then I doubt he was ever cut out for football at any kind of elevated level.

Small League 1 club or League 2 club where he can be a big fish in a small pond is probably where he'd do best I suspect.

Sorry I nearly spat my tea over the keyboard reading this.

Confidence is the one thing Izale has in bucket-loads. He believes himself to be the best striker in the league. If he doesn't score its simply because those around him are not good enough and not providing the service.

Agree with this. I met the guy once, arrogant tw4t was my opinion at the time.

It's crazy how an incident like that can affect a player so much.
  • i remember first seeing him nearly 3 years ago and thinking fuck we've spent how much on him he looks wank .........................
  • After two clubs have attempted to send him back during loan periods, I think it's pretty safe to say that we'll never get shot of him. Good news IMO

    Very good

  • good move, if true
  • I actually felt that with a good pre season and some confidence he would do well for us. But the management see him week in week out so they must know. The fact that 2 clubs tried to send him back early from loans says it all really.

I'm not saying that it was that that shattered his confidence however it was a big step from MKD to us at the time and he was signed for big money, which was and probably still is a big weight around his neck.

Scoring the goal that secured a win against out local rivals would have made him an instant hit with the fans and probably got him the run in the team that he needed to settle himself.

Had that happened, who knows what might have been.
  • Personally think the Stockport penalty and the Palace miss pretty much defined his career with us. Remember the penalty "miss". Pretty sure the keeper moved way off his line and made a good save. He should have been given the retake, but Zheng quickly took over. You could see him wilt after that. His confidence looked shot.

Shows a pretty weak character imo if he struggled to come back from those incidents.

He hasnt been helped by two big injuries and the lack of a run in the side.

Having said all of this Parky bigged him up in pre-season last year. He was given a chance and he didnt take it. He was summed up for me by the run of bookings he got for taking his shirt off. If I'd been managing him, he'd have copped fines after the first one.

We paid too much for him. He has earnt far too much whilst on our books. If the severance deal is true then its probably best all round.

  • Was at Charlton today and heard someone say that he had left or was about to leave.
  • Signing players who'd proved they were goal droughts in the champ for multi-millions was just absolutely idiotic. Varney couldn't score in the champ for Crewe, and Mcleod had been outside the barndoor frame for Derby and Sheff United.

Always said we should have signed Cureton and Iwelumo, a ready made strikeforce who you'd only need to give three year contracts anyway. OK so we may have missed out on Cureton, with the pull of Norwich. Yes I was excited at buying players I didn't know too well, but as soon as I saw Mcleod it was obvious he couldn't take the pressure of a center half within five yards of him. It was the start of a wholesale acquisiton program whereby virtually every player wasn't able to physically compete.
  • Complete, utter and total pony. Confidence is not his issue, ability is. He is a cocky, diving tool and I will be so delighted when he leaves that I will pop open a bottle of champers. Never done it at any level above League 2 and I would be interested to know how many of the goals he got for MK Dons were penalties after he had taken a dive in the box.

Have seem him miss too many simple chances to think he will ever shine and hope he ends up in sunday league when he leaves us.

Surely the last piece of "dead wood" left at the club...there are other players we agree / disagree on but generally they all seem like an honest bunch who will give everything no matter how people rate them.
  • It would be lovely to be rid of him once and for all.
  • Bloody Pardew at Charlton was generally not only a crap judge of a player's ability.
But he seemed to almost totally ignore doing his homework on a player's personality and character.
  • If I remember correctly the first time we saw him was against norwich came on as a sub and got us 2 pens ( or am i thinking of someone else) since then he's done s*d all

Agent Pardew said he was going to be one of the best strikers we'd ever had. If he's that good why has'nt he paid us a £m to take him to southampton

All that mixed in with a lack of physical players like Colin said and adding to them with more similar players. Also had too many young players, most of them either being foreign so needing time to settle or from lower division so playing with bigger expectations.
  • Very true, Scoh ...... I overlooked the fact many of his signings weren't competitive.

In a competitive game, you need competitive players ...... to compete, obviously!
Yet Pardew at Charlton apparently overlooked this point.

    Incredible.

    Great post Oggy.
  • Really excited when we signed him. Never looked confident and probably forgot how to score. Can't imagine his attitude was great. Hope we sell and don't release!

i think that was Mcleod's problem. we all hoped he would be the next darren bent; pardew hyped him up, we all watched his youtube video and thought he would be an instant success and i think the pressure got to him. then when it didn't go to plan he lost all confidence in himself and so did we.

Probably true of Varney as well. Ended up trying too hard at times. Pardew called him his "main man" just before our relegation season.
  • Remember what Parky said about how Varney works so hard, yet some of the time his finishing looks tired as he is knackered when in scoring positions. Was evident on numerous occassions for us, but also recall him having a decent chance for Wednesday when they went down on the last day. Not sure if the same can be said for Izale but he is certainly a confidence player who probably does need an arm round him fron time to time. He has never had a run of 5-6 starts in a row- most I can remember is last season when he played well against Huddersfield and stayed in side until his Northwich disgrace. Maybe if he was told like Varney he is the main man and starts a season as number 1 striker then he would benefit and score goals. Last season he certainly had enough chances to have had a decent return by November time.
  • sorry to break up the party here but we are basing this on a posting on another messageboard. Not saying he won't be going but I've a feeling it won't be just yet.
  • As much as I'd like to see him depart, even back into the care of the community with a paid up contract, I'd rather we signed a couple of strikers first. Currently now that Burton has left we have Akpo and not much else to choose from.
  • He's actually gone! yeeeeeeeesssssssssss

Finally cleared out all of Pardew's rubbish. Hopefully the last player to leave this summer.
  • Yeah agree Scoham, hopefully the last...now show us the new strikeforce Parky!!
  • Gutted :(
