Despite him being ex Palace and being pretty pony in his previous spell, we could do a lot worse. Butterfield is very experienced so will help with Solly's development (Solly is a fine prospect but not sure if he is ready to replace Richardson just yet) and imho would not be the worst piece of business. He should also be very solid at League 1 level and with the Doc and hopefully Dailly/Fortune also there, our defence will again be experienced.
Worst ways, scored a hat trick v Wolves- stick him up front.
we wouldn't sign both. I'd prefer Francis, didn't think much of Butterfield. Whoever we sign Solly should be given first crack at it. What is the point of having good youngsters coming through and noy using them. If you don't they just end up leaving like Randolph.
i'd prefer him to solly
and our youngsters aren't good enough(for promotion) yet and i'd rather they made their learning mistakes elsewhere than in our team and then hopefully come back like scott parker as much better players!
Wasnt great in his first spell but was thrown into a relegation scrap in championship, maybe a useful signing at league 1 level with a chance to bed into the team from the start of the season and like cafc dan said could be a back up striker.
[cite]Posted By: Danny Addick[/cite]Do they need two right backs?
Southampton had some money in their player budget left over, and it was burning a hole in Pardew's pocket.
He would have signed another striker, but there's none left. He's bought them all, already.
Agree with ohhhahhh. If we have ideas re: promotion then we need something better than the youngsters. At this moment Butterfield is better than Solly. Would have been a good signing on a free. Francis is better than both so lets hope he is next in line.

Pretty stupid comment considering we only have three strikers.
Of course it was a stupid comment, Mr Saints fan. It was meant to be.
You've only got to look back just a few seasons to see the damage wreaked on Charlton by Pardew's mis-management, right?
And his obsession with strikers ....... let me present to you:
Luke Varney.... .£2.5m .......sold for less than £1mill (10 goals)
Andy Gray ...... .£1.5 m ..... sold for £350k (9 goals)
Izale McLeod .. ..£1.1m ......contract terminated (3 goals ....yes, in 3 seasons!)
Chris Dickson ....£50k........released (never scored a League goal for CAFC)
Stuart Fleetwood.£125k......sold for £20k (never even made a League appearance for CAFC)
Did I mention the hugely inflated wages these players were signed on?
Then there were players like Moutaouakil, Christensen, etc, signed on ludicrous contracts ..... which we could just not unload for a considerable time.
Oh, I could go on and on ......!!
Thank you, Alan Pardew. You played a major part in wrecking our club.
[quote][cite]Posted By: Saints fan[/cite]Maybe your board should have had more of a backbone to stop him from making all these signings on 'inflated wages'.[/quote]
Havn't you got a Southampton board to go and pester you bore.
Saints Fan. Please go away. Pardew is for every Charlton fan a knob of the highest order and you coming on here defending him is I am afraid like a red rag to a bull. Gloat or whatever on Southampton Life.
I mean Soton have not gone into administration recently due to overspending.
Unfortunately Pardew is doing just what he didnt do at The Valley ie buy proven players at the level the club is playing rather than gamble on unearthing gems from lower leagues and abroad.

I would laugh my balls off if they signed that lump of overpaid dog shite.
How some of these players keep on getting pro contracts is beyong my understanding.

If we got rickie lambert he'd probably fail to score for us.

Oh do shut up, please.
Havn't you got a Southampton board to go and pester you bore.
Why because I am correct? There is no question about Pardew overspending at Charlton but your board just sat there and watched.
Yes, I do.
We can't just have one RB in our squad.

£3m is a huge price in League One, but the majority of that went on two players who will be able to play in the next league if we get there.
