Went to the game, as said doesn't mean much at all. Senior players are only getting back into it and working on fitness, mixed in with trialists, some who aren't going to be good enough, and the young players.
Bauza as Clem said looks more like a link man, worth another look, maybe just a replacement for Burton though.
Sawyer I wasn't too impressed by. Esajas probably a bit better.
Thorvaldsson had a good chance, but typical a typical Charlton striker having it blocked on the line! Had a header at goal that other players might have scored.
Usual stuff from the rest, Llera winning headers and trying long balls, Basey, Elliot, Semedo, Solly doing ok but nothing more. McCormack does seem a bit like Bailey.
Jenkinson did fairly well. Stavrinou decent, tried to get things going. Racon usual moments of nice touches.
Only pre-season but I don't think Perkins and Davisson (who was on the left 2nd half) will be near the first team come the start of the season. Tuna was probably a bit better.
Interesting to see Cousins at centre back at only 16, not built like Mambo was at that age. Did well enough, him and Mambo weren't tested that much really. Obviously highly rated and you can see why, keeps it simple, tries to read the game and looks comfortable on the ball.
Mulley the second half right back had a decent long range shot, didn't stand out but then again no one really did. Nothing to say about the other goalkeeper we had.
Our line up and subs against Bournemouth will be nothing like either of the teams today, so nothing to worry about. The young players usually go on loan to Blue Square Prem sides or below, so it's no surprise they generally looked no better than AFC Wimbledon players.
[cite]Posted By: CafcSteve[/cite]With the small amount of friendlies we have surely Akpo (Our main striker) should been playing.
Maybe injured? No mention of him anywhere by the club, same with Youga. Not like Akpo will be leaving, Youga could be.
Looking at the teams again, there will surely be no more than around 6 of all 20+ players involved starting against Bournemouth. We still have Akpo, Doherty, Jackson, maybe Dailly and Youga to come back, and any new signings.
can't see how anyone can read anything into today's game. Only been back in training a week and a lot of players missing. More signings to come too. Can't expect triallists to shine when it's a mix of youngsters and triallists and a number of subs made. Parky will get a better picture in training.
My thoughts on today...nice stadium and good and sunny. The result was irrelevant, we had two completely different teams out and the second half was really only kids.
Of those in the first half worth commenting on i would say Jenkinson looked a real cultured footballer but probably too light weight for this season, if we can get him in the gym for a year to bulk up he could be a very good player in future. Sawyer was not up to it - would not bother again (for those who thought Lloyd Sam was bad this guy will maybe have given you a reality check as to who we are looking at as replacements. The Dutch chap was quite quick but didn't impress so I would not be inclined to take another look. McCormack I didn't really notice (not necessarily a bad thing), Bauza was the pick of the bunch and certainly worth a second glance, nice touch and had a run at a couple of their players. Thor looked like he hadn't played much footy recently (which I assume he hasn't). Decent touch at times and maybe worth another look but did miss two he should have scored.
As for the youth in the second half, their wasn't much to be impressed by - Racon & Waggy were clearly the best two for us, Cousins looked like he could be an excellent prospect but most likely for next year, Mambo is massive but very raw and certainly not ready for league footy yet. Tuna, Perkins, Daviddson, Stav did not look like league quality players and whilst I am certainly not going to rule any of them out on the evidence of 45 minutes of a pre season they will need to improve on today's performance significantly to have any impact whatsoever.
My view on today is that pre-season games are hard to judge anything off, but:
Elliot: looked a little rusty.
Solly: got caught out a few times but would like us to stick by him, although I expect a new right back to come in.
LLera: looked ok but again looks better in the air than on the floor which can be a problem for a footballer.
Jenkinson: looked ok.
Basey: I was really glad to see him back and expect him to sign a new deal and be playing a lot of games this season.
Sawyer: Nothing special but looked better on the inside than on the wing. Doubt we'll sign him.
Semedo: Went through motions.
McCormack: Not sure if he'll start if Semedo and Racon are still here but think he'll do a job over the season.
Estajas: Had a few flashes and tried to help out with defence. Might be the best we can get on a free.
Thorvaldson: Unlucky not to score but looked a bit short of fitness. Think he'll get another chance.
Bauza: Really liked him and think he'd be a very useful addition. Would sign him up now before anyone else can!
2nd half
Lots of youth in second half with Cousins and Mambo largely untested. Racon had a few nice touches. Stavrinou had plenty of effort. Davisson, Ketteridge, Perkins and Tuna didn't show a lot. Waggy I think will have a good season and his finishing could be important as we have a real lack of goal threat at the moment. Mulley didn't do a lot wrong and think he may get another run on Tuesday.
This game meant nothing and it was all about fitness. I cant believe some of the reactions on here. Some of the youth aren't ready for League One but most don't have to be. It was just a mass run out for the squad. We need new faces and as Parky has said he's looking to get them. Hopefully Dailly and Basey will re-sign and I hope we sign Bauza. A couple of strikers are an absolute must but nobody knows that more than Parky. With an additional 4 or 5 of the right kind of players, I really think we may even shock some of our own fans!
Well we did lose 2-0 to Wimbledon and not manage a shot on target in the second half yet all your player comments are as if we won comfortably! Llera was tragically poor, hoofed it everytime he got it.

The result was nothing and probably 5 of the 22 will make the starting 11 against Bournemouth. Only a few of the players gave a toss because it was a nothing game. In the second half it was nearly all our youth and although they didn't manage a lot it was still a big step up from what many of them are used to, especially so early in the season, but still good experience. With regard to Llera, he's not the greatest but I still think he can do a job as a back up to Doherty and Dailly (hopefully). It was a loss but some peoples glasses are half full and others half empty!
[cite]Posted By: Mike[/cite]dear me that was dreadful. Any hope I had of not being in a relegation scrap has gone now
Are you oohaah in disguise
It's a pre season kickabout for gods sake. The emphasis is on gaining fitness and not getting injured whereas Wimbledon are also playing themselves into a shop window
[quote][cite]Posted By: No.1 in South London[/cite][quote][cite]Posted By: Clem_Snide[/cite]Was Parkinson there today? Definitely only Kinsella & Breaker on the bench.[/quote]
Yes 100% he was there I saw him on a few different occasions.[/quote]
Parky was sitting in the Directors' Area, a couple of rows in front of me (long story!), from beginning to end, and I'm pleased to report that Richard Murray was also there - arrived midway through 1st half, and told me at half-time that it was his first day out following operation. Looked well in the circumstances/heat. and was deep in discussion with Parky after Dons scored their 2nd...
Most Swansea fans seemed to like Bauza (or Bussy as they call him):
"He 'has a better first touch than Pintado, the ability to turn and shoot, he can take a defender on and go past him - he just needs a string of games, without injury, to get confidence and perfect his role in the system. He could easily play either of the two top positions in a 4-4-1-1."
Most seem to think he was ideal playing in the hole, behind the target man forward.
Sounds like a bit of a Todorov.
[cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]Sounds like a bit of a Todorov.
Exactly who my son said he reminded him of so much, just a little more mobile. He seem to drop into the hole a lot more as the half went on, leaving Gunnar to play up top.
Apart from the first few matches with Jonjo pulling the strings, last season most of our attacking threat came through the wings. I thought we lacked the player to open teams up centrally.
Of the new guys in the 1st half Bauza stood out with his movement and passing but didn't look the 20 goal striker we needed, but played some lovely football. If we signed him, we'd need to play passing football, not the ugly stuff that Parky seems to think is neccessary in this league. Thordalsson didn't get a lot of service but managed three strikes at goal in 45 minutes, Burton would take about six matches to equal that, but he should have buried the one that was cleared off the line. Sawyer was workmanlike but nothing special althogh he looked better than McCormack who was very average. Second half I thought the right back Mulley was our best player, defended well and got forward, although no chance to see if he could put in a decent cross. As a part timer he could definitely improve with full time football and a better bet than some free transfer cast off like Francis.
Kids - Jenkinson did well along side Llera, Davisson was anonymous and lightweight, Stav was OK but seemed reluctant to pass to Racon, Solly was worryimgly poor if he's 1st choice right back. Cousins won nothing in the air and the defence was a bit shaky, playing too far apart, but would have preferred to see either Cousins or Mambo alongside a seasoned pro. The strikers were ineffective, Perkins being the most wasteful.

Francis was one of Southend's best players, I'm sure they'd have kept him if they could, probably couldn't afford him. Mulley could be worth another look but Francis is proven at League One level.

1) Does anyone know anything about a salary cap? (sorry lost the link):
"The League already operates a salary cap in Leagues One and Two, with clubs prevented from spending more than 75 per cent of their income on all club wages, or more than 60 per cent on playing salaries."
2)From the Southend OS: FRANCIS RELEASED
Posted on: Thu 08 Jul 2010
Manager Paul Sturrock has today agreed to release defender Simon Francis from his contract at Southend United.
Simon had one-year left on his current agreement at the Football Club.
However, following discussions with new boss Sturrock he has agreed to allow Francis to seek his football elsewhere next season.
"I have spoken with Simon several times over the past couple of days," said Sturrock.
"Simon feels that he needs to be playing his football at a higher level than League Two to develop his game.
"He has been a fantastic servant to the club over the years and enjoyed an excellent season last year.
"Allowing him to go now means we are free to strengthen our squad with players that want to be at Southend United.
"Simon's wages represent a significant percentage of the budget for next season.
"By releasing that we can now look to strengthen the depth of the squad as I outlined in my press conference on Monday."

sounds like if he can stay injury-free then he might be a good player for us... but then said the same about mckenzie.
