curbs said to murray he wanted to stay that last year and help murray in the process of finding his successor and that's from the horses mouth
but obviously murray backed his own footballing/business judgement over curbs
and let's be honest it was the year that we HAD to stay up due to the huge increase in tv revenues that were to be received
so murray was left with the choice of giving curbs some decent dough to stay up for that 'year' or entrust that critical season and dough on someone else
you do the math!
it's not rocket science is it ffs
Curbs took over West Ham in a far worse position in the Premiership than we were in the Championship when Parky took over. Curbs kept the Hammers up, Parky didn't come close to keeping us up. If you judge them on achievments, there's no comparison.
According to Charlton anti-Curbs nay-sayers, Tevez should have made his job more difficult. And didnt the manager he took over from also have the same Tevez? And remind us where that left them. I thought Curbs couldnt handle big names? I am sure I remember the swell of mythology being one of the many unfounded ill informed criticisms of him.
No. Curbs attention to detail was legendary. For instance there's no way he would buy a player with a reputation for "liking a little drink". He knew every little detail about his transfer targets.
Tevez was in the team that we thrashed 4-0 at the Valley. One man doesn't make a team. Curbs miraculously got them playing, then Tevez came to the fore.
Curbs was a legend and rightly so. But during that hugely underachieving season of 96-97, when we spent much of it hovering just above the relegation zone but finally finished 15th - many, many fans were calling for Curbs to be replaced.
The very next season he led us to the Premier League.
I like Parky, yes he took over at the time when we saw the worst Charlton team in history, last season we were close to promotion all without spending a transfer fee, would any manager really of done that much better?
To be honest he is his own man. There ARE similarities between the two in that they both assumed control when the club is in a right mess and are fashioning their own team with their own type of players.
Both are relatively quiet with the media and on the touchlines. Both are pretty stubborn (not always a good thing). Both prefer to just go about their business without bringing unwanted attention onto the club. Neither gets ahead of themselves and they keep their feet on the ground.
I honestly get the feeling he is very well liked and respected at the club and that he could be around for a while to come yet. I really hope he has a good season as he actually seems a genuinely nice fella.
Parky has a hell of a lot to do to be compared to Curbs but I wouldn't say its impossible
i know some very influencial people at Charlton saw Parky as a possible successor to curbs and had he been available at the time he may have got the job instead of Dowie. Maybe he's been dealt a bad hand at the moment and on the face of it he's achieved nothing yet but i'm willing to get behind him this year and if he achieves promotion it will be a real achievement.

They don't call it "drinking like a Fish" for no reason, though.

He did buy a couple of crocked players though. Gary Rowett, for example.

And unlucky with some like the legendary Gary Poole, the fullback who scored a 2nd minute wondergoal on his Charlton debut, and never played again - and had to retire.
Every manager picks up a few duds, even Curbs ..... Robbie Mustoe, Jesper Blomqvist, Fanny Jeffers, Marcus Bent who could only ever score in a hotel room, for example.
Good job, I'm not mean enough to mention Mike Small - or even the players he sent to Coventry.
But that's hardly a balanced record of his signings - and certainly not meaning to dig him out.
Just to illustrate that even the best managers can't always get it right.
After all, even Sir Fergie at Man Utd was capable of signing Ralph Milne.

Haha...very good point! They were probably quite restrained thinking about it ;-)

Crikey the similarities are endless. Even the aftershave is the same.
