Yassin Moutaouakil has left the Addicks after agreeing to have his contract terminated, the club announced on Friday.
The French defender, who joined the club in summer 2007 following Charlton's relegation from the Premier League, still had 13 months remaining on his deal.
But the 23-year-old last represented the Addicks in February 2009, and after spending six months on loan with Scottish Premier League club Motherwell last season, has now exited The Valley.
Charlton chief executive Steve Waggott said: "After months of discussions, we've agreed that it would be best for all parties if Yassin left the club to pursue his career elsewhere.
"It was important to resolve the situation and the player's future prior to the start of next season to allow us to restructure the playing squad without the high financial commitments to peripheral players such as Yassin.
"Motherwell gave him a platform to attract interest from other clubs, but despite some tentative enquiries, there were no concrete offers, so we eventually agreed to release him at the start of June.”
Moutaouakil leaves The Valley after making 29 appearances for the club since his purchase by former Addicks boss Alan Pardew from French club La Berrichonne de Chateauroux.
The defender was hampered by a number of injuries and was also forced to play second fiddle to loanees such as Danny Mills and Graeme Murty.
The arrival of Frazer Richardson at the start of 2009/10 and the emergence of homegrown Chris Solly saw Moutaouakil's first-team opportunities remain limited last term, and he represented Motherwell 15 times in the closing months of 2009.
Moutaouakil is the seventh player to depart SE7 since the end of 2009/10 following last month's news that Leon McKenzie, Matt Spring, Chris Dickson, Dean Sinclair, Jack Clark and Tony Warner would not be offered new contracts
Oh thank goodness. Liked him as a player on the occasions that I saw him play, but it's clear his face doesn't fit, so getting him off the wage bill is a relief.
[cite]Posted By: Elthamaddick[/cite]doesn't say how much we had to give him to bugger off though....although whatever it was it can't have been as much as his contract was worth.
Assuming the rumours are true and he's on 8k a week, then even if we've paid off half his remaining contract, that leaves us the equivalent of 1 player on a year's contract on 4k a week, or 2 players on a year's contract on 2k a week. Worth doing.
Whilst this is obviously good news i'd love to know what we had to pay him to go. His 8k a week is 416k a year. I'd assume we've had to pay him at least 200-250k to go, so whilst good in the longer term that's still 200k or so gone in one lump sum.
Or can we agree to pay him off over a period of time?
It's good news we don't have to pay a player we didn't even give a squad number to last season... Shame that whilst we were continuing to pay him there wasn't some way we could've got something for our money by playing him.

I guess we'll recoup (some of) the lump sum via the Bailey fee.
I'm not sure we would have had to sweeten the deal in the end. A professional footballer needs to be playing football otherwise his future is in jeopardy. Yassin had gone for too long without playing and other clubs would not come in for him when they had to buy him and match his salary.
But becoming a free agent he can negotiate a new deal from scratch and actually start playing again.
At the end of the day footballers want to play football, money only accounts for so much for so long.

Would have played Richardson, Solly and Omo ahead of him anytime.

Tell that to Winston Bogarde!
In an ideal world for us yes, but i highly doubt he'd walk away from an 8k a week contract when on current form there's a likelihood he might not even find a club next season.
He will definitely have been paid a fee to go.

agree with Chris. And to be fair to him why shouldn't he take the cash if he can.
I'm sure there has been some short-term financial pain for us in this, but it looks like we have begun the process of ensuring that those on the wage bill will be contributing value.
Only a small step, but we're getting our house in order, and in my opinion moving forwards.

Agree with this. I'm sure most footballers are pretty unhappy when they are not playing, and even though a player like Moo2 was on very good money - it all becomes pretty meaningless after a while, if that player becomes frustrated and unhappy.
Added to the fact, England isn't his native country and Moo2 would not be around his family and close friends.
He's still very young remember - only 23.
The rumours around suggesting French clubs are interested in him, if containing any substance - would probably give him a lifeline to find himself again and resurrect his playing career.
[cite]Posted By: oohaahmortimer[/cite]another one in the never ending list of footballers who are pony who have slid in and out of our club in recent years as we've slid down the leagues

And will doubtless become legends for their next club and score a million goals whenever they play against us (even the defenders).

in one sharp sentence on Twitter.
A big saving on his wages and a bad influence out of the training ground.
Glad he is off the books, but i wonder at what cost to out already depleted funds.
Or can we agree to pay him off over a period of time?
