As Large says, would probably do alright for us if he's used and paired correctly. Wouldn't be surprised if there is something in this, Parky got a lot of mileage out of Cureton and Iwelumo at Colchester - the classic big man/little man combination. Question would be who the little man is going to be?
Don't be surprised if we set up to play fairly direct with lots of wing play next season though.

Can certainly imagine more games like Colchester at home, using Akpo or another big striker to get us up the pitch, and aim crosses at. Would help our wide players as well with more good targets in the middle.
[cite]Posted By: nth london addick[/cite]the biggest issue is that we need a scorer to go with the big man,
I know what you mean, but maybe it can be the big man? Lambert, Holt, Austin, Paynter etc are all big rather than small, skillful and quick. Beckford is one the only quick top goalscoring strikers, and he's quite tall himself.
Aberdeen have pulled out of the race to sign Kevin Kyle after Mark McGhee admitted the Kilmarnock striker is out of his reach.
Kyle is out of contract with Kilmarnock and the 28-year-old reportedly has offers from England and abroad.
He had held talks with McGhee at the end of the season about a switch to Pittodrie, but the Dons boss admits they cannot match his wage demands.
McGhee said: "We have given up on Kyle and are now looking elsewhere as the player is out of our reach.
"Jimmy Calderwood has left Kilmarnock due to budget restraints.
"Kyle was his player and he couldn't keep him. We are equally frustrated we cannot bring him here."
McGhee will now turn his attention to other targets as he bids to bolster his squad ahead of the new campaign.
He told the Press and Journal: "I am disappointed as we have put a lot of work into trying to bring him here as he was one player we felt would do well for us, but we move on."
Anthony Stokes scores better than 1 in 2 in the SPL, couldn't hit a barn door in England. SPL is poor standard and 1 in 3.3 is not a good record. No Movement- makes Akpo look like Drogba Means Burton will surely be off as we will not have Burton, Akpo and Kyle next season- all are similar strikers.
If Kyle wants to sign for us and is cheap he could be worth a gamble. Decent record last season with 10 goals in 33 games, he was just never a Premier League player, and when younger probably not a Championship player.
As a comparison, Iwelumo's record up until he was about 27-
1996–1998 St Mirren 13 (0)
1998–2000 Aarhus Fremad 27 (4)
2000–2004 Stoke City 84 (15)
2000 → York City (loan) 12 (2)
2001 → Cheltenham (loan) 4 (1)
2004 → Brighton (loan) 10 (4)
2004–2005 Alemannia Aachen 9 (0)
[quote][cite]Posted By: cfgs[/cite]Also everyone should remember that he signed and helped turn Big Chris into a goal scorer rather than just a lump[/quote]

Big Chris was an immobile lump who conceded fouls cos he didn't move for the ball until it reached his general area. If Parky buys Kyle it will be a confirmation of his lack of a system to play to. I don't know about lots of wing play, it'll be lump it up from the back and hope for knock-downs or set-pieces - just like we've endured for the past 1¾ seasons. What's wrong with a bit of pace?

Stokes never played in League 1 though and SPL is a higher standard than League 1, I would say. Certainly no worse. Burton's record was not much better last season and he scored half his goals from the penalty spot. In fact, 1 in 3 is a solid strike rate, get 1 in 2 and you're into the realms of prolific. Hibs are also a better side than Kilmarnock - Kyle might have scored more in a better side, who knows.
There are some decent goals in amongst this lot and you can see he'll cause problems if you get balls into the box, seems to find a lot of space in the box too, although hard to tell from a video montage if that's down to his movement or just crappy defending in the instances in the video.
As an aside, his agent's phone number is on the YouTube page if anyone wants to give him a ring and try to find out there's anything in the story!

Nothing, but pacy goalscorers are hard to get at this level, they tend to come with a high price and attract offers from higher divisions. We had pacy strikers on the books last year, but they were all crap and basically quick and nothing else.
Anyway, we can't pre-judge Parky's plans on the strength of one transfer rumour, but he partnered Iwelumo with Cureton at Colchester and they scored a lot of goals and got Colchester up. He also played with wide men and overlapping fullbacks that got plenty of crosses in. It would seem likely that's how he'd like to get us playing if he can get the personnel and in fairness it's probably the best we can hope for on such a limited budget. Doncaster are probably the only team that got promoted from League 1 in recent years playing genuinely attractive football.
Soccerbase shows all the games he played and which he scored in, none were against Celtic or Rangers, who he played five times. We won't come up anyone of that standard in the league.
If he's scored about 10 goals in around 30 games, no reason why with the right service he couldn't score 15 or so in 40+ games in our league.

Using a big target man doesn't confirm he doesn't have a system to play? In fact now that it's more likely we will have a style of play, we won't have to try and fit four central midfielders into a five man midfield, with right footed central midfielders playing on the left. With Pardew we became a team that hoofed it to Iwelumo, but Parky stuck with 4-4-2 and mixed it up, on the floor and used the long ball when required. I don't think it was as bad this season as it had been.
Nothing wrong with a bit of pace, but as we've seen with Dickson and McLeod, you need something more to go with it. Pace also doesn't break down teams packing 11 players deep in their own penalty area.

Pace is all well and good but only if you know how to use it. Izale McLeod is the perfect example of a brainless, fast striker.
[cite]Posted By: Scoham[/cite]Pace also doesn't break down teams packing 11 players deep in their own penalty area.
But it does help if you've a big man, good in the air and a handful for defenders, to meet crosses into the box.
It's been a major weakness of our attacking game in the past couple of seasons.
Don't forget also, the big lump striker also converts to an aerial ball winning defender and physical presence when defending set pieces around our own box.
[cite]Posted By: Scoham[/cite]With Pardew we became a team that hoofed it to Iwelumo,
But that was only after we lost Andy Reid, and our major midfield creativity on the ball. And with the departure of Reid, Iwelumo lost his potency also - no concidence, surely?
[cite]Posted By: Scoham[/cite]Parky stuck with 4-4-2 and mixed it up, on the floor and used the long ball when required.
Parky is not an absolute beginner at management these days, but it's evident that he gets the best out of a certain style and character of player. Despite not having, how do we say it on here? ..... "a pot to piss in", all he's signings appear to have a certain 'Parky-style stamp' about them.
And as Exiled suggested, all the signs are that Parky is hellbent on re-creating the style and fluidity of his Colchester promotion team of a few years ago; a Third Division team suited to winning a Third Division promotion (like Millwall have just done?).
And the next season, the team that Parky built (even though he left straight after winning promotion), flirted with the Championship playoff places all season, before tailing off to finish 10th.
[cite]Posted By: Danny Addick[/cite]I assume this means Burton's off then. which is gutting because he's been awesome at times this year.
not really. We only have Akpo, Izele and Tuna up front. Izele they will try to sell and tuna is still young so really only 1 first choice striker.
Burton might still stay but will depend on what we offer him compared to what other clubs can pay plus location of the club as DB's family live in the Midlands.
And we've not signed Kyle yet and may never do so.
Got a reply from the Kilmarnock FM researcher after asking him about Kevin Kyle.
I don't know much about the rumours, but I think he'd be a good league one player. Very good in the right conditions.
PROBLEMS
-Struggles with niggling injuries (and missed pre-season last time). To be fair though he wants to play through the injuroes for the team.
-HAs only scored two goals in his time here against the 'big' teams. Mostly scores against the 'lesser' teams.
-Falls out with everybody. Seems to be a bit of a big time Charlie. Not so much that he thinks the club is too small for him, more that he has an OTT vision of his own level of importance. Shouted back at the manager a coupkle of times, spoke out agaisnt the chairman, seems to have annoyed a few players with comments in training (unsubstantiated though)
-Not skipper material (As we made him this season - briefly)
PLUS POINTS
-For a 15stone 6ft3 power house he does a lot of chasing and closing down.
-If he gets a full preseason I think he is going to have a good season. Especially as he has a bit to prove down south after ending up at HArtelpool. Which was a bit of a fall from EPL and Scotland striker.
-Got a Scotland call-up this season with Killie. Not many players have done that in recent times,.
-Awesome chest control, decent first touch (for a big man)
Interesting, sounds like someone we'd really have to consider his character (which we know Parky likes to do), but a decent enough player for this league.
Kyle will be alright in our division. 15 goals if we are lucky but we'd be much better defending corners and set pieces. The thing about Kyle is he does control the ball and get it on the deck. He would play in Sam pretty well I think. Plus I'm surprised he is only 28. Suppose he will run himself ragged for 60 minutes and then we unleash Akpo.

And at Coventry from 2006-09 he scored 5 in 44 (25 starts, 19 subs). He makes Lisbie look prolific!
