[cite]Posted By: dartfordgent[/cite]can someone open them curtains and let just a chink of light in !
We could easily have had a FAR worse season than we did last year......
if Parkinson can start to get a real grip of this club and the players that he has at his disposal I think he can get us in the playoffs...
I for one really enjoyed last yr, bar the ending of course... I felt attached to the players, I felt hope for the rfirst time in 4 yrs, I felt we were honest in our approach, I dont think anyone thought they had a right to get promoted, something I felt with some of Pardews sides...
the beginning of the season was extraordinary, some of the football sublime, I had a big smile on my face for weeks and was boring my work mates with talk of promotion...
and Southend away... listening to that before work .... fantastic... totally brilliant....
So another season like that with a bit of luck, and bloddy that **** Pardews nose(yes please) and it could be a classic...
cheers mascot so right looking back the away games with mates and fellow fans where such a hoot orient sarfend gills brighton hpool etc etc cant wait for next season okay we may struggle but will be the same guys getting pi**ed with and sharing the highs and lows its about charlton not the game for me
[cite]Posted By: creepyaddick[/cite]Only 7 of the original 22 teams in the premiership have never fallen out of it.
Might take a while but we will get back there eventually
Of the fifteen that have fallen from grace 8 actually fell as far as the third tier aswell
[quote][cite]Posted By: WestStandCookie[/cite]Completely agree with Off_it, I don't know how much further we are going to fall before our luck begins to change, the last few seasons have been unbelievable. The blip started when we got relegated from the Premiership, then Zabeel announced they were coming in for us & I thought this is it, we're back. Then Zabeel pulled out & it's just been bad luck ever since.
I'm off to Dubai in 26 days, so I'll tap up some millionaire Sheik while I'm out there......although knowing our luck, I'd find the News of the World fake sheik!![/quote]
I think that the rot started once we had completed building the ground to a capacity that realistically was all that we needed. Prior to that the club had been on a steady rise pretty much non stop since the return to the Valley, and the growth of the club and ground had always been something that focussed minds. Once we got up to 27k it was obvious that we had reached a plateau in terms of size of the club and infrastructure.
The problem with this is was once you've levelled out it it all to easy to start slipping backwards. The board saw this and started paying Premier league wages for players to take us to the next level. This worked under Curbs as he was astute and understood the way the club worked. After he left the board continued to gamble firsty allowing Dowie to blow two season's transfer pot on players who were generally total dross to keep us in the PL. They then gambled again allowing Pardew to build up his unbalanced bloated Championship squad to try and get us promoted. The final gamble was this season by trying to keep the majority of the squad for an immediate return to the Championship.
Each gamble has failed and resulted in the debt increasing but i do have sympathy for the board, they have taken calculated risks and been let down by Managers who have failed to live up to their hype (I'll exclude Parky from that).
As a charlton fan i have always triued to look on the bright side of life but at the mo i am so down on my club and football in general i dont even think i can be bothered with the WC. There i said it what most are thinking.
The big problem now is the growth (and still growing) in financial inequalities between the divisions.
There is an expanding gap between leagues 1 and 2 and the Championship and an even greater chasm between the championship and Premiership.
As I see it eventually one of 3 things will happen:
1) The Sky bubble will burst and all the artificial money propping up debt ridden clubs will stop causing major problems for all but the best run.
2) A seriously rich backer will takeover the club and enable us to buy our way into the Championship and maybe eventually beyond.
3) The most likely scenario in my opinion. We cut our cloth and bumble along as a league1 / league 2 yo yo club like Gillingham.
I am just grateful to have had the privilege of witnessing top level football at The Valley during my lifetime. It is something I thought would never happen and I don't expect it to happen again being realistic.
