Pre-season v Watford

  • Good point that Scoham. Although I expect him to be pushing on more this year, maybe Mambo will feature a fair bit this season and that's why he has been playing quite a bit in pre season. Saying that I still expect Parky to be looking at bringing in another CB along with a striker or two. Marshall and Bauza now looks like done deals just ready to be completed.

Bring on next Saturday as I'm quietly optimistic now.
  • [cite]Posted By: Sage[/cite]Marshall and Bauza now looks like done deals just ready to be completed.

Is that from a reliable source, Sagey?
  • I don't know about it being a reliable source but, my mate, who was at the game today, waited until the players came out and heard Bauza speaking to Akpo and they were appearently speaking about playing alongside eachother next saturday. Which would indicate Bauza signing. Not only this, but having Bauza playing all throughout pre-season and playing again today, I wouldn't be suprised if he signs by Tuesday.

I get the feeling they get on well too, as when I went to the Welling match I waited behind after the game and they came out together then and was talking a lot too.

Just thinking, Parky said before he is looking to give Thor more time to earn a contract, but he didn't feature at all today. With him not doing nothing impressive that I can think of, I cant see us signing Thor I'm afriad.

Anyway after a good performance today, while dominating proceedings by the sounds of it, I'm going to stick my neck out and predict a 2-0/3-1 win next Saturday. There I said it. :-O
  • You guys were certainly much better on the ball and quicker.

    Good luck for the season.
  • Bauza and Abbott very impressive as a pairing, far more attacking force and movement when they were together, though Akpo did his best first half, but no-one to get on the end of his headers from long balls by Dailly/Doherty.

McCormack grew into the game, pushed forward more 2nd half, and Mambo far better at RB than Solly. Good set pieces by Jackson. Reid ran his socks off, Waggy did OK. A moral victory on the balance of play.
  • i was they i was very very impressed with reidy he ran them ragged and yeah doc did struggle and looked more asured then llera came on!! akpo did well in a lone role
and then abbott and bauza came on we looked a threat too, but god knows how we didnt score! WATFORD championship your having a laugh!!! watford will struggle big time! we were better than them and they knew it! watford so quiet CHARLTON fans behind me and my fiance'e were loud we are going up!

We did very well dispite losing 1-0, I desided to go at the very last min, I think we looked alot brighter and looked alot more creative then Watford, Abbott showed some nice touches and flicks, and a real disire to win the ball, Good to see a little bit of singing & atmosfear building up as we head towards the first game on the season, Goodluck Horns but from that performence i feel your going to struggle this year
  • lol what kind of fan are you we lost to a non league team and almost went up auto!
  • I think most realistic fans accpet we are likely to be involved in a big relegation battle..

What happens when you waste so money meaning you have to rely on a group of youngsters with limited experience.
  • Looking at the above posts, that seems like a decent summary from those who were there. Reid was exceptional. I really hope that we can keep him fit this season.

The biggest worry was Doherty. He was dreadful. Don't know if he was carrying a knock, or if Parkinson subbed him at half-time due to his performance but, on today's showing, we have signed a liability.

I thought McCormack did well enough. Nothing spectacular, but he has a happy knack of being where the loose ball falls. If we play a five-man midfield, he has a clear enough role in there, I think.

Abbott made a difference when he came on. He is reminiscent of Todorov. I have hopes.

Now, I know this will upset the 'give the kids a break' contingent ... but Solly proved yet again that he is not up to League 1 standard, particularly from a physical perspective. Things improved when Mambo came on, but I really hope Francis has more about him than those two as we will struggle at RB otherwise.

Watford didn't offer much, although I sense that they could have increased the tempo had they needed to. The game was played at a very relaxed pace (Doherty may not agree) considering it was the final pre-season friendly.

Finally ... although Jon Fortune was named as a substitute, it was Norbert who came on wearing the No.17 shirt, although the stadium announcer told us that it was Fortune. I don't think that the real Jon Fortune was anywhere near Watford today.

Been there, mate ..... so feel for you.

What our gaffer has done is spot a decent player for this level with good attitude, brought him in for nothing or on loan.
Yesterday's 2 signings (Abbott and Francis) came in for tiny fees, the first time he's spent any money.

It's probably the best way forward for your Watford, Horny.

Now you're really going to upset Large and Golfie.......!

    :o)
  • Fuming there was no bev, fuming. Thought we were by far the better team, would be very worried if I was a Watford fan. Standouts, Ried and Jackson, both so comfortable on the ball. Elliot made some great saves when he had to. Impressed with Abott's running off the ball. All in all revved for next Saturday.
  • Malky is trying his best but its hard for a first job to face such a tricky situation.

We weren't that far away from going into administration.
  • Interesting comments from Parky on Mambo
Parkinson went on to echo his Academy coach Damian Matthew’s praise of youngster Yado Mambo from earlier in the week, after Mambo impressed out of position at right back in the second period.

He added: “If you asked me which of the young players has had the best pre-season I’d say it’s got to be Yado.

“He’s a colossal lad in terms of his physical presence but he’s also a really good character who wants to win and wants to throw his body in front of things to protect the goal.

“But he’s also come back more athletic this season and if we’re away from home and need someone in that right-back slot for a big back four to defend set plays at the back end of the game then I can’t think of many better players than Yado Mambo.”
Seems he's more likely to be used at right back to defend a lead

  • when Youga is fit I hope we play Jackson in CM as with Semedo/McCormack there there is very little creativity. In Reid and Waggy we have two very good wingers and hopefully we can find a decent partnership up front from Abbott, maybe Bauza, an other and Sodje if we are really desperate. At the back we lack pace but will be pretty solid. However, a lack of strength in depth in a few positions may be our downfall.

Agree with that Large, we probably have 14 decent L1 players but beyond that we are very stretched.

If we keep everyone fit then we can challenge for the Play-Offs but if we lose 4/5 players with injury then we will be in strife.

We need at least 18-20 senior professionals on the books and at the moment we only have....

    Eliott

    Francis - Dailly - Doherty - Llera - Youga - Jackson

    Wagstaff - Semedo - Racon - McCormack - Reid

    Sodje - Abbott

We really need another 4-6 players, even if a couple of them are season-long loans, I would still like to see Mooney come back in up-front and also bring in Bauza, another winger, a keeper and another versatile midfielder.
  • Strength in depth is a bit of a worry, but if we can get 4 more in like Parky wants, it shouldn't be too bad. We could still take players on loan through the season when required if we get a few injuries and suspensions, just as we did last season (plus Warner on a short term contract).
  • How did Norbert do?
  • THE PA mucked up so i didnt really notice it was him at first, from what i saw he did OKAY, didnt really get involved much i dont think

  • My thoughts from Saturday:-
Elliott - I arrived late and missed the goal but apart from one decent save he had little to do
Solly - sorry but he was poor again, dallying when he should have cleared and didn't get forward
Dailly - did his usual job
Doherty - possibly the slowest player I've seen in a Charlton shirt (yes I've seen Dave Shipperly play) but defended well
Jackson - showed some quality on the ball
Waggy - our most dangerous player but the ball just didn't fall for him
McCormack - looked a decent player, better passing than Bailey
    Semedo - solid as ever
Racon - apart from a wayward pass that put their guy clear on goal (Elliott good save) he was pure quality
Reid - not sure why he's playing for us rather than in the Prem, the best player on the pitch by a country mile
Akpo - worked hard and looked dangerous when alongside Abbott for a short while
Abbott - 1st touch nearly led to a goal, an intelligent striker, Andy Hunt without the pace
Mambo - In a way I'm disappointed we've got Francis, I love this guy. The first time the winger took him on he couldn;t get past him, the second he went to play it back to the full back and a size 15 nicked it off him, thereafter he moved inside and left Yado free to roam up and down the wing.
Llera - personally I think he is our best defender, I'd be interested in stats of goals conceded when he's been on the pitch
Norbert - looked a decent footballer but no pace, I was disappointed that Mulley didn't feature instead
Bauza - if he had a poor game last time, he was back to his best. Quality in posession, trying to make something happen.
  • Sounds like a promising performance

As for depth I'd rather have 14 good players and a weaker fringe than 20 odd average players and a tiny bit of quality. Parkys signings have been mightily impressive and I think we all feel a heap happier than several weeks ago.

Bauza, a striker, Marshall and maybe another utility type player (basey type) and we are in good shape
  • Llera our best defender. Not a fan of the bloke to be honest but surely not as good daily. Think llera can be dyer at times
  • As Parky said himself..... he needs 4 more.

Also, I thought I read somewhere he said decisions will be made on the triallists tomorrow, Tuesday.

As a footballer Dailly is obviously very good but he retreats too far too quickly when we loose the ball which doesn't give the midfield a chance to get back and help out. Llera holds his ground and may get exposed further up the pitch but at least that gives time for cover to arrive.
  • Not a bad result for us going on last nights game against Naaarwich,
basically the first team we played against all be it a friendly and were not as out played as Naarwich were
