10 goals !!!!!!!! thats the reason we didn't go up - We need two decent strikers who can both get around 20 goals each, and until we do we will be stuck in this division.
look at Milwall - we are a better team than them & we have better players, but they have a couple of strikers who know where the goal is - plain & simple.
so he has scored 5/6 goals for us without being a regular. Fleetwood scored five for Exeter without being a regular. Most on here say Fleetwood is rubbish. Follows then that Akpo is too.

Well not too often that we agree, Golfie ...... but nail on head there, mate.
Not only do they have there own 23 goal £150k striker, but they play a more direct and penetrating attacking game, based on getting behind defences - and the ball to their strikers in dangerous positions, as quickly as possible.
So quick and frequent service to their strikers.
Well, I guess we didn't have £150k, so no 23 goal striker. In any case, our strikers don't often get that same type of quick and frequent service.
We tend to play a more indirect attacking game bringing in lots of crossfield crablike passing, allowing opponents the time to funnel behind the ball. When that move breaks down, we hoof it.
Time for a reality check folks. We are skint and getting worse. 20 - 25 goals a season strikers either cost money or you get lucky....which we ain`t. I am sure that Parkinson would love to shop for his meat at Harrods but he can only afford Aldi.
even at Aldi you can come up with a bargain or two. Charlie Austin was playing for Poole Town until October and there are others out there, you just have to find them.

Doesn't follow at all, Large. That sounds like prejudice against Akpo.
Completely different type of forward for a start - and in any case, Akpo has only had half a season with us compared to a full season for Fleetwood at Exeter.

And get lucky with them.
Otherwise every half-decent non-league striker would now be signed up to League clubs.
And that clearly isn't the case.
I know that it doesn't follow Oggy. I'm not prejudiced against Akpo at all, just think that the Conference is more his level. Those championing Akpo are prepared to write Fleetwood off without even seeing him play. At least I've seen Akpo play and can see his shit.

Like I said above. You have to get lucky. So far we have not been with Dickson and Fleetwood.

That's your opinion, Large - so fair enough.
What Akpo doesn't have is finesse and a good 1st touch, but then neither does Nicky Bailey.
Rather than judging him only on his weaknesses, you also have to give credit for what he does bring to the table.
He's not as clearly dominant in the air I feel (and no doubt you too?) as a 6'2" striker should be, but he never shirks a challenge, gets stuck in, plays with enthusiasm and reasonably pacy. Okay, he's a bit of a lump, and puts his weight around, but defenders hate playing against him.
That gives us knockdowns, and percentages on loose balls - and while defenders have their eyes on Akpo's challenge, it gives opportunity for team mates to nip in and pick up the pieces.
Despite his non-league early career (although he was in the youth team at QPR), he's a handful and proven enough at this level.
He's a local lad, knows the division - and right now, that's what we can afford.
I love how people keep going on about Charlie Austin as though clubs pick up non league strikers up who score 20 goals in their first season all the time. Austin is a rarity not the norm.
Morison was less of a gamble as he'd been amongst the conference top scorers for 2-3 seasons.
I've seen Fleetwood and Akpo play, and Akpo clearly offers more. Fleetwood is another McLeod, his game is about using pace to get in behind defences. No real intelligence or skill, can't win the ball in the air, not particularly hard working or strong.
As I said, we need a big lump, perhaps Parky already knows there aren't many better available and affordable. If Parky could go out and get Iwelumo he probably would have.
Oggy sums up Akpo's strengths well. The Colchester game showed even if he doesn't win the header, defenders end up heading it back to us or out for throw ins. Only Burton comes close to that out of our current strikers.
I don't rate Akpo that highly, but he can play a part as a squad player. I would agree if he's going to be a regular we could struggle a bit, but hopefully he won't be. I don't think we've brought him in to be that 20 goal striker, more as a different option and hopefully to play his part alongside one.
If 3 or even all 4 of Burton, McLeod, Dickson and Fleetwood go, we'll be bringing in at least a couple of other strikers. I'm sure we won't be lining up the first game with Tuna and Akpo next season. There's still loads of time to find a few more strikers.

Had a quick look on wikipedia, there are around 25 divisions at the level Austin was playing at, and another 12 above that up to and including the BSP. There's probably over 1,000 strikers across 30 odd divisions across the country.
[cite]Posted By: razil[/cite]anyone know if it was a short deal he signed?
Not confirmed yet by the club, but I'll be surprised if we're handing out many 2 year deals to players, most will be 1 year. Especially with an older player with a few fitness issues like Akpo.
the fact that is wasn't announced makes me think it was only a short-term or even a rolling contract just so he could play against swindon. The club said that they wouldn't be looking at contracts until we knew what league we would be in next season, so it would be a bit of a contridiction if they signed Akpo on a 2 or 3 year deal not knowing how the game would go.

I don't think that anyone is saying it is easy but the point is that 2 of the 3 teams that finished in the playoff positions with us (and are now contesting the final) managed to do it, why can't we?

Does the scouting system need to be looked at?
