  • Looking forward to this list of managers that would have definitely done a lot better and were affordable.

sorry allez les addicks can you please remind me whom Narwich brought in in January and the fees paid, thanks. No-one in the top six spent very much money ie Millwall 130k on Morrison. Parky said last summer that we needed to keep our 'star' players and we did, resulting in a very large wage bill. A wage bill far higher than say Swindons and Millwalls. Maybe we should have flogged Bailey and bought a striker but Parky obviously thought we didn't need one. We held onto Shelvey too and then he didn't use him properly. Parky has been a disaster from the start and the sooner he goes the better in my opinion.

I didn't want to come on tonight and have these type of debates, it's too soon, and I wish I hadn't risen to this one but I've typed it now so sod it ......

From The Telegraph, in January Norwich bought in:

    Russell Martin Peterborough £200,000
    Oli Johnson Stockport Undisclosed
    Zak Whitbread Millwall Undisclosed
    Anthony McNamee Swindon Free
    Jim Goodwin Huddersfield Loan
    Michael Rose Stockport Loan

That's 4 players on permanent deals, 3 for a fee. Notice how all ours were loans too. Pretty much no-one else in the league spent except Soton, but that is to be expected in January. I'm sure if you look at the transfers before the season, the other top 5 clubs spent significantly more than nothing, which is what Parky spent.

The majority of our problems with wages haven't come from people like Bailey (I don't know the exact figures, but seeing as he came from a lowly League 1 club remember, even if we trebled his old wages (unlikely) I doubt they'd be more than Moo2's), it's on people like Moo2, Sam and I imagine Racon and Semedo can be put into that wage bracket too. Parky signed none of those to contracts, so had no control over that budget.

and would be willing to come. Nigel Adkins has been mentioned several times previously, and I've got a lot of time for him, but he's got Curbs Godlike status at Scunthorpe. Why would he leave that to drop down a division to a skint club with fans with overinflated expectations?
  • Agree and I said last summer when defending Parky if we could get Adkins or similar then go for it. Not convinced he'd have definitely come here last year and he certainly won't be this summer without a takeover.
  • I agree wholeheartedly with the pro-Parky camp. Results aren't what we'd like, but to say that he's been a disaster is overreaching, IMO. Again, the consequences of not going may well prove disastrous, but at the same time, I generally like the kinds of players (and as best I can perceive, people) that he has brought to the club. At least as importantly (to me), he is a proper, respectful and respectable face to have on our club. We can't say that about a predecessor or two, even when their approval ratings were highest.

Clearly, this board will have to agree to disagree on this topic.

The passage of a few hours hasn't helped a bit.
  • I think Parky has done a good job, players obviously respect him and recently we have played good football. With more £ and a striker we would be promoted but has had decent loanees many of whom have played for him in the past. Unlucky tonight in the end too many draws cost us automatic promotion Gutted

  • Average attendances Norwich 24758, Leed 24818 us 17606. Leaving aside whether that is bums on seats or tickets sold, in crude terms that mean about 50% more revenue for both of them as TV money in League One is so low - what suggests that we should have finished above them? I'd love to have discovered Charlie Austin and it's easy to compare him with Dickson and Fleetwood, but how many goalscorers like that get found in non-league - our last one was Paul Williams back in 1987. We ditch the manager and then start agaain with little or no money and someone who has to get to know the squad he's inherited - completely barmy
  • I really hope Parky is here next year, i think he has done a good job with what he has had to work with.

Now it is going to a rebulding job and i think he is the guy to do it.
  • Parky has done well this year considering people like Derek Hales were saying we were going to get relegated again. Who else is there to replace him? If anyone says Martin Allen then ill throw myself in front of a parked car!

If you think Scunthorpe would have just released him from his contract for nothing, and he would have come here, you are frankly deluded.
  • "Super" definitely not.Without doubt he's put in a lot of effort and team spirit has improved. We showed in the first half the kind of motivation and effort that we should have played with all season. It simply wasn't there against the likes of Orient, Brighton, Gillingham etc.
But too often his negative tactics and poor team selection has cost us dearly. There were times when the team were crying out for some creativity, but Shelvey was left warming the bench. Too often Bailey was wasted on the wing when Reid would have been a far better option. The team were never able to build on the confidence that a big win would have provided, because the team was never set up to get a big win, even against a poor team like Stockport where the management were quite happy with a 2 0 result when we had a great opportunity to press on and really improve our goal difference. They needed a rocket up their collective arse after that one, but they got nothing.
I will always maintain that he had more than enough talent in that squad to finish in the top two, and we proved that in the games against Norwich, Leeds and last night. Our big opportunity has now been wasted due to his over cautious negative tactics, and poor formations and team selections. He's a decent bloke but only an average manager IMO.
  • [cite]Posted By: allez les addicks[/cite]Large I know you haven't been his biggest fan through the season, but who do you honestly think could have done better in the circumstances who was available and on similar wages?

how much do you reckon he'd be on though?
  • This content has been removed.
  • Will he want to stay???

Fecked if i would, especially listening to some of the unrealistic & ungrateful barstewards out there.

Cheers Phil. You gave me hope. Something i hadn't felt for a while.

I'm glad i bought you that beer & i'd gladly buy you another.
  • We should have sacked Curbishley when we lost to Palace in the playoffs.
  • Nothing but respect for the man.

Jesus Christ, what do people expect from a manager, seriously?

He got us within two points of automatic promotion and we lose on penalties in the Play-Offs - how much more can he do to please some people?

Feck me sideways, the bloke has not had a pot to piss in and yet he still cobbled together a very effective side full of free transfers and loanees that nobody else wanted and came within spitting distance of pulling it off.

And his reward for that should be the sack? WTF are people on about? Let's say we sack him (which we won't/can't), then which of modern football's great managers are going to be banging on Murray's door demanding the job? I bet Mourinho/Van Gaal/Hiddinck are waiting with baited fecking breath. Turn it up.

The only plausible way forward is to put together the best possible squad for next season and to keep some continuity with Parkinson in charge and going one better next time.

Its not Parkinson's fault we ended up in League One, the damage was done by others, and he brought us within a whisker of going back up first time - sacking him would be a disaster.

AGREE 100%. This is the best season we have had in a long time. Parkinson proved himself as a manager. The squad came through. Over the course of the season we lack just lacked that 20+ goal a season striker.

    Spot on.
  • Queensland review pretty much sums it up well.

He's okay, I don't know if he has it in him to start it up all over again next season.
  • Respect for the man yep i can buy that i respect him, he took a tough gig when most thought he wouldnt or shouldnt have been given it, he tried hard yep he gets that too

    but ultimately

He failed to keep us up in the 1st remit of his role, he was party to 1 of the worst runs in our lubs history

he failed in his 2nd remit to get us promoted he chose poorly with some signings and good with others, how long do you wait and how long do you give him, some of you guys are too forgiving lets give him another season heh thats not a bad idea. but it aint a good one either he has been in and around the team long enough not just as a mgr but as a 2nd, he failed to motivate or negotiate the obstacles in front of him, move over someone elese have ago

  • Two sides to this particular coin:

For: did well without a brass farthing to throw around and managed to steady the ship when there was obviously a lot of turmoil about takeovers etc. Plus, had to manage expectations which were very high indeed (especially after the start we had to the season). Oh, and to be fair, some of the experienced pros he brought in this season have been good acquisitions. Plus, it's not his fault he isn't mystic meg when it comes to striker shopping.

Against: Sometimes seemingly tactically inept when it comes to team selection and tactics when trying to win games(not playing Reid and sticking by Mooney when he was having one of his, er, unproductive spells, for instance), allowed the best talent we had in years to be unused (who knows how many points that may have cost us?) and has brought too many forwards, none of whom really cut it, with the exception of Deon who has been solid when available. Plus, had a squad consisting of mainly championship standard players to build on in comparison to teams which took points off us this season...

Verdict? Who knows....but, all of this is immaterial due to the fact that we can't afford to sack anyone, let alone hire anyone to replace them! So it's Parky's Super Red Army again next season then!

At the end of the day we judge by results: he's had a good period at the club now - and the results are too many draws with the players available in my view

Failed to forge a fluent playing team, long periods in games where are players just don't appear to know each other

    Questionable tactics and substitutions

Incapable of picking a steady 11, and bizzarely partly due to always trying to get his best 11 on the pitch regardless of favoured position

Arguably wasting the Shelvey raw talent

He's not been rubbish, but he's not been good either, time to walk in my view.
  • i have in the past had a pop at parky for some of his decision making , but i will say this the man has
gone up in my estimation he has kept calm during the season with no money to work with and to be honest a lot of people calling for him to go including myself, i now hope his stays and builds a team to take us up next season because the way the man has conducted himself has been superb .
  • Some of the comments on here are very unfair and don't look at the broader picture at all.

Yes, we had a couple of bad home losses to Brighton and Orient. Yes. And. So. What?

Care to look at the points that Leeds and Millwall also dropped at home to crap sides?

We have just played a 46 league game season, there are BOUND to be bad results in there, how can anyone think you're going to go through the whole season without bad results?

The bottom line is that we finished within a whisker of automatic promotion, let's say Robbie Elliott (for arguments sake) doesn't make those last-minute errors against Norwich and Millwall (giving us four more points and auto promotion) - does Parkinson then suddenly become a decent manager again?

Parkinson provided the foundation for success this season but individual errors really did cost us a lot of points this season and its impossible for any manager to legislate for that.

Again, the question must be asked, who could have done any better than Parkinson this season with the squad at his disposal?
  • I like Parky, I think he's done as good a job as most managers could have done given the resources available and he comes over as a thoroughly decent man. It would be a shame if he felt he had to leave.
  • I would stick with him - think he's done reasonably ok. The cost of terminating him and his teams contracts plus the cost of buying out someone like Adkins or Poyet (even if they would come which is doubtful) can be much better used on the squad.
Also most of his signings have been pretty good. There exceptions - but Borrowdale was a reall emergency when jackson got injured after Basey and Youga and I suspect choice was very limited. As for strikers, well they are always the most difficult and often the biggest gamble.
The summers comings and goings will be very interesting in terms of players. What offers will Semedo and Bailey attract - can we afford to refuse them? Will Sam accept the huge pay cut he will be offered? Will Reid accept a low offer ? Will Jackson accept an offer as I assume he would still like to come to London?
  • Personally I'm in the Parky should stay camp, even though I agree he has made some costly errors, but with the exception of Lambert perhaps who hasn't? The play-off/second place position has been held by several teams at various stages, to me that suggests that Parkinson is far from the only one to misjudge/bugger up a good position or run of form. To go out to penalties, especially when we were the better team IMO, can't really be placed at Parky's door, he was so animated and passionate last night.

To use last night as an example, was it Parkinson who missed that chance in extra time? No, it was Burton (who I think has been excellent, its merely used as an example) or Parkinson who made some clangers in goal? No it was our keepers (both of whom I like, again its for arguments sake.) Its slightly harsh to say 'oh the tactics were crap' when they may have worked but for one reason or another, on the pitch things did not work out.

No manager would come in KNOWING that arguably 'their' best players will be sold and that they will have tuppence to spend to replace them. Stick with Parky, he knows the players, he knows the club and he has done his best to get us promoted.
  • I expected more of him and the team this season but never got it. I dont dislike the man i just feel he gets it wrong more times than he should. Last night for instance we were great in the first half but as soon as we came out for the second half we sat 15 yards deeper. Now that enabled swindon to get a foothold in a game they were out of, was that Parkys halftime tactics? To shut up shop sit deep and defend. I feel it was but what we should have been doing was attacking for the 3rd goal. It created gaps all over the place our midfield was to far from our forwards so couldn't get there to support them. Its only ok playing that way whe you have a really quick forward and a couple of really quick midfielders so you can counter attack, sadly we dont have that.

Parky, Kinsella and Breacker were all going bonkers at Nicky Bailey telling him to stop playing so deep. He didn't listen to them. He was 10 yards behind Semedo - our holding midfielder. This was definitely not Parky's tactic!

As for Parky I think he's definitely done as well as could have been expected. He certainly finished the season off pretty well with some big performances so he knows how to motivate his team.
He's done well with the limited resources he's had and he has the continuity of knowing the players, including those on the fringes of the first team who are likely to be in the first team setup next season.
Getting rid would be madness as I don't see anyone out there that could realistically improve us for so little wages. We don't have money but we do have an astute manager and we should get behind him.
  • Get real - we can't afford to sack him, but I could see some of his back-room staff going.
