  • Lost it on Friday - can't really complain about last night, the team played to it's potential and at times excelled themselves.

And now - more rebuilding, more belt-tightening. We just can't buy enough time to catch our breath and it has been that way for the last four/five years.

    Oh well, whatever, nevermind.
  • The only positive I can see for next season.

I can't see Plymouth/Peterborough/Sheff Wed as making it a stronger division next season. This year was a very tight and close division.

Southampton will be there with investment, maybe that's what the board will look at, a year ago Southampton were going out of business a year later they have a billionaire owner no debts and won a cup all for a measly 10 point deduction. ( Not saying I want to be going into admin btw)

    Most has been said already.

Didn't think we would do it pre-game but we played better than I expected and were the better side but to have got ahead and then be playing 10 men yet still not do it is so so agonising.

There were some excellent performances but special praise to Mooney and Reid. One a much derided player another a dreaded "loanee" but they gave their all and with some skill and vision. Burton also was outstanding.

Bailey was a fault for their goal but the ref missed the block on Borrowdale as he tried to cover and the defence messed up as well. I'd blame Bailey but over the season he's done enough. He'll be off as will some others, finances will be bad, bad, bad but as long as their is a Charlton I will be there.

Henry Jnr said in the car coming home "At least they'll be some new grounds to visit next year - Notts County, Rochdale". If an 11 year old can get through that without any hint of tears or tantrums so can we.

    LLL&BH
  • I thought we lost it on the break for the elusive third goal when Bailey should have passed to his left to our man in acres of space on the wing. Game would have been killed there and then. But no, move breaks down they break and score a crappy goal on an evening where Swindon never threatened. Says it all really.
  • Alright so you can all berate and complain about players freely but I cannot blame the player who had the worst game out of the bunch it is rare I criticise players but the season is over now and it's my turn. Bailey has won us a few points yes. Baileys sloppy passing game has lost us quite a few too. He had a good game but was still IMO our worst player!
  • Well the club cannot say that the crowd did not get behind the players!. Did not feel too bad last night, but pretty down this morning, and would rather not comment on the game, except that Mooney and Reid played really well!.
Of course I thought we were the better team, but the sad fact remains that Swindon are not a top side in this division, and if we cannot beat them over 2 legs do we really deserve to go up!, it was in our hands and we let it slip through with a pretty poor goal.
Not that people want to hear that! Nor do I......., It hurts and I feel sorry for myself and for fellow fans of Charlton, the nightmare continues ......Perhaps a time for people to consider there position at the club! maybe.......
  • Glad most people are giving the players the praise they deserve.
I don't think anyone can nitpick when the difference between a chance of promotion or not is one kick of the ball.
Just wasn't meant to be. All the good luck we had on the way up the leagues is being taken back on our way down.
  • The team were well up for it last night. It was a good team selection and the subs were about right. I thought Akpo Sodje may have made a bigger impact than Forster though.

Most players gave their best and played for the team, unfortunately not enough in our locker, as has been the case most of the season.

So, so pleased Mooney shut up all the vile idiots at the Valley, he had a great game. Semedo and Dailly have been first class this season. Reid was exceptional last night. I hope we somehow keep these particular players.

Bailey will be off next season for sure... not that bothered at all. He may have scored a nice few goals for us but too many mistakes/tantrums/playacting have cost us dear on more occasions than not in the second half of this season and, in the end, outweighed his goals contribution.
  • gutted ,what the future holds f--k knows , it may take a few years but our great football club will come back from this ,last night we played with passion and gave the pride back to the shirt.
  • I am as gutted as I have ever been, this is far far worse than relegation.

Going to have to get used to watching chaff like Wagstaff instead of Lloyd Sam, Spring instead of Semedo, Tuna instead of Burton....

Who do I support in the final Millwall or Swindon?

  • The game finished here at 0540hrs - was watching it on telly & rocking my baby son to sleep as it all ended.

I felt totally empty and all I could think of as I looked down at him was, "Sorry son for the life of footballing heartache that's gonna be your Dad's 'gift' to you."

    The reality in a nutshell.
  • Gutted naturally, but I said before the match that as long as I saw 110% effort from every Charlton player I could take defeat on the chin. I think I actually got 120% effort from them all. Proud and disapointed Charlton fan today. My thoughts now turn to the consequences of this loss.
  • Totally gutted. Swindon, barring Austin and Ward are a poor side. We battered them but it wasn't to be, and now we'll see a mass exodus of the squad over the summer. Promotion is Millwall's to lose now, i think they'll murder Swindon at Wembley.
  • I'm backing the Terriers to cheers us all up a bit tonight...

  • woke up at 2:20......

    got very excited

went back to bed at 5:40....

    heartbroken

woke up at 8:00 for work....

    felt numb

now it's 6:36 and I didn't know where to turn

    so I came on here

it really helps to know that there are others out there in the great tribe of Charlton going through the same pain

    ouch!

my silver lining - it was gonna cost me about 1500 quid to come back for Wembley.... so now I can use that for some nice goodies to help me feel better

I would have taken Wembley though...
  • An excellent committed controlled team performance last night, one terrible lapse at the back cost us dear on the night. I said to Gumbo at the start of the evening I was anticipating a Glorious failure, not far from the truth. Sad way to end the season, just wish the Valley was like this most games, I thoroughly enjoyed the game more than any other this season.

To all supporters of Charlton FC 'Keep the Faith & Hope to see you all next season'

[cite]Posted By: Dazzler21[/cite]Bailey lost the ball for their goal and skied the penalty... But it's not his fault nice one!

or maybe it was Burton's fault for his miss, or Forster for his. Or maybe it was because of the missed chances at Yeovil, or Parky's defence minded tactics throughout the season or, or or. It's a team game and you win or lose together. Tonight we lost, for whatever reason, but the blame isn't down to one person.

This is the best post on this thread. No one's to blame, it's just one of those things...

[cite]Posted By: northstandsteve[/cite]well went to bed at 12.30 awake at 4 can't sleep and feel violently sick.I could take this if i knew we would mount another challenge next season, but we wont and im scared shitless for my club.

same here although i lasted till 5am and then the ridiculous amount of chocolate i consumed to numb the pain made a quick exit from my lower regions

at least we can't lose to millwall in the final now, although they were the only team i fancied us to beat in the play offs for some bizarre reason!

Strangely enough, I was up eating chocolate at 2.30
  • Voice has gone, hands black and blue from clapping for 90 minutes, nerves shredded and an emotional wreck. Gutted for Bailey as he hasn't got another game to get over last night. He got stuck in like the rest of the team and the crowd played their part brilliantly. Kept the packed away end quiet for a change and think I went that little more deaf after the game. Hope we keep Parkinson as he is proving to be a decent manager even though we failed to go up. Already bought my season ticket and hope we go on and win this league by a frigging mile next season. Bring on the World cup now, can't wait.

  • agree with most of what was said. i felt frustrated but accept that we were good enough but that luck was not on our side. i believe that this has been a successful season for parky and the team. 4th after a few awful seasons has to be seen as a positive overall position. remember one more win and we'd have gone up automatically, so hardly a poor season is it.

i'm also sad for bailey as he has had a great season and i hope he stays on. if you're listening bailey PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, stay for another year! i heard gray (sunderland) on the radio the other night reliving his play-off penalty miss and he said it took him the whole summer to get over it. but they went on to smash to points record and gain promotion, so thats what im hoping for, for us next year. top spot!. if norwich could do it so can we. if we play well i'll be more than happy, success would be most welcome.

    proud to be an addick!
  • Finally got round to reading this board, been trying to muster the courage to read anything about the game all morning.....like many on here I'm absolutely gutted we didnt make it.
Watched the game on Sky and credit to all those who went - the atmosphere came over as excellent for the 120 minutes. Cant fault any of the players, Parky or the coaches for last night....they gave it their all and Mooneys goal was top drawer.....it just wasnt to be.....but it dont half hurt!!
As for the future.......god only knows whats gonna happen.....I just pray that we can compete next season and end the sorry saga that has befallen this great club over the last 3 years. Our supporters deserve success - but it needs to be sooner rather than later.
I wish you all a excellent summer and thanks to everyone who contributes on this board to keep those of us who are longer 'local' updated with news, views and comments.
We will rise again we just need to believe.
  • Dissapointed that we lost, but has been said by many before me, 30 plus years as a supporter so ive kind of got used to it. Must say i travelled all the way from the Isle of Wight, got back at 03.15 am and dont regret the trip at all, fantastic game, full of incident, great atmosphere and thought every player did their bit and looked by far the better side. Swindon just more than rode their luck and unfortunately this happens. Back for more next season and hope we have more than our fair share of luck.
  • Still feeling numb and totally gutted ... Fabulous atmosphere at the Valley last night, and hoped right up to the end that we might do it. This time yesterday was nervous and excited and feeling in need of a pint or few to calm nerves before the match - now I just feel in need of a pint!
  • good luck in the final ... but i fear you may have used it all up on beating us .. come on the robins!
  • [cite]Posted By: rocking robin[/cite]I thought id let the dust settle . On the night we were lucky maybe its our year ? We should have been dead and buried at ht and when gordon got sent off really it should have been game over , but the thing is we dont give up . Im not fussed who we play now just gratful to be there i guess . Hope theres no hard feelings towards me it was only banter and kidology maybe if its millwall you might cheer us on ?

I thought we shaded it over the 2 games, but it all came down to us missing a spot kick by about a foot.

I thought Swindon showed over the 2 legs that they are a decent team & I wish you well for the final. We will all be supporting you if you play Millwall.

Jonathan Douglas was immense and won you the game with his composure in holding up the ball and getting it away safely, then setting up your attacks. Austin also looks immense.

We didn't lose last night. In fact we won 2-1.

We lost promotion with the few home games at the start of the year, that we didn't win.

Anyway I was proud of the team & the supporters last night and at least I trapsed away from the ground knowing that we could have done little more on the night.
    (Errors apart).
  • too gutted to post last night and only now have decided to.

I watched it on internet (wasn't able to make the game) and after the penalties, just went straight to bed and lay awake thinking how gutting it is to be playing in the third division again next season. There's no consolation in 'new away trips' to rochdale !

As for the team, they played really well and also the crowd sounded great too. yes it was a wrong decision pass that led to the goal but thats just what happens in football. llera had to bring down austin, otherwise it would have been game over before full time for us.

And fair play to all those who took the penalties - bailey's was a bit chris waddle-esque (a la world cup 1990), but at least he had the b*llocks to take one.
  • Only just steeled myself to read this thread , after a bad day at the St Lawrence ground, Canterbury, listening to all the Gillingham fans among the Kent CCC members offering kind words and comiserations - which only seemed to make it worse.

The one thing that pleased me last night was the performance of those who have often got the worst slagging this season - I thought both Mooney and Sam put in immense stints.

In truth, over the entire season we probably did not deserve to go up, so perhaps we should not be too upset (although, of course, we are).

I suppose administration now beckons even more strongly. If we can use it to regroup and regenerate like Southampton and it attracts a buyer for the club, then perhaps it will not be too bad in the long run.
  • Those sub-human scum from Bermondsey winning have made me pinch myself, headbutt walls, punch my housemate and put my hands in the kettle to wake up from this evil, orrible 24 hour long nightmare.

Only one of the above is true by the way.

One of the only people at work I get along with genuinely asked if I got my season ticket for next year. Yep, I said. 'You can't do anymore than that son' he said.

Still at least we have been softened up for when our national team let us down in the summer by going out in the group stages

Wasn't he the one that should've been off in the first half for kicking the man when he was down though?
