I thought it summed up the season - started very well and in total control. Two goals up, everyone is happy. Second half (or second half of season), stopped playing well. Them we came in fits and starts like the end of the season.
I agree that Sam was great defensively today - Burton was immense, Bailey excelled too, although why he did he pass it into traffic and not the space, which ultimately led to their goal? In the first half I felt we needed another.
I also agree, the crowd in the second half was more subdued than the first half, when the support was immense. The team wavered as did the fans.
Their goal came from allowing way too much room - as in the first leg. You just can't do that.
We had so much of the ball at periods but, again, it reflected our season - unable to kill it off. I think the game was ours to win but it didn't happen (can't fault the effort generaly).
Their subs seemed to work much better than ours.
Sad, but not surprised somehow - strange feeling. I just wonder where we willl be in August - who will still be here?
Swindon weren't great, but they re-grouped way better than us and I think they deserve some credit for that. It doesn't take away from the fact that we deserved to win (which we did) but once it gets to penalties, it's a lottery (though they had great composure).
Yes I'm gutted, but what a great game to be part of. thought the crowd were magnificent, loads of noise in the lower north. Thought Deon Burton was superb tonight, held the ball up well, loads of lay offs, Reid ran his socks off, Sam ineffective, Ricardson was very strong, Hope Dailly stays, can't blame Bailey, for the wrong choice of pass and the pen, hes been our best player and biggest heart in the team. And the end of the day we finished 4th in the league, got another chance and were not good enough, was it the players fault, was it the management teams fault? I think those arguements are for another day. But tonight I was extremley proud of my team, and my fellow supporters. Cheers! I'm hoping to wake up in the morning and realise its all been a bad dream!!! Goodnight!
Watched the game here in Oz with my brother and my two little boys (three and five years old) - it was their first ever Charlton game and by the end they were gutted just like my brother and I.
After the game they both asked if I would buy them their first Charlton shirts for next season....and so the wheel turns.
As for the game, Swindon had one effort on target in normal time and it went in, have to say that Randolph was very slow off his line (as he was at Northwich) and it is probably the biggest fault in his game and why Parky rated Elliott over him for most of the season.
First half we were excellent, first to the ball and aggressive, but after half-time we dropped our intensity and Swindon got a grip on the game and fought on level terms.
As others have said, the game swung in the split-second when Bailey somehow gave the ball away rather than releasing Reid and Swindon broke through and scored, although our defence and Randolph could and should have done better.
After that we never really looked convincing and things obviously got worse when Llera got sent-off, I know that Dailly was covering but having already sent off one of theirs then the referee will always be looking to level things up and he did, Llera can only blame himself for that anyway.
Just have to wait and see who is here next season now. The thing is that there is not much dough around the Championship so we might not get the bids we expect for Bailey, Racon and Semedo although Sam will go on a free to the CCC.
I reckon next year our 1st XI will look like this, we will have to bring in freebies or loanees to replace the three or four first choice players (Sam, Bailey, Racon, Semedo) that are probably leaving.
Can't fault Parky's team selection, tactics and substitutions tonight. The team had a good tempo and balance. I thought Samedo and Reid were the outstanding performances. Racon looked good when he came on. Very disappointing result but it was one of the most entertaining games I have seen down the Valley for a long time.
Feel gutted for Bailey but he should remember that if it was not for his goals during the season we would not have even made the paly-offs.
been a cack season all in all tbh more annoyed that bailey is the one it has happened too but i am sure he is big enough to bounce back from it although it wont be with us,
The support was great i was a close to the away end as you could get and believe me the sound travelled tonight more than any other.
I thought Swindon blew their chance when they missed so many good chances but in the latter stages of that game tonight we missed 6 good chances the forster miss was inexcusable for me,
Bailey didnt even look to reid which surprised me as reidy was excellent all night and was a willing outlet
i dont have fear for the club as i cant influence that and tbh there will always be a charlton athletic fc just in what size or capacity.
Llera was right to bring him down and it was a red card
Mooney took his goals well and looked a good player tonight
The reason we are in Div 3 lays firmly at the door of Phil Parkinson and i hope that for now the board rests and takes time to consider its options correctly and do the right thing (and i dont mean they should sack him) i think over the next few weeks the club should take stock look around them and decide what is the right way to move on.
As fans the season is over another one awaits thats why we go to football and not to some 2 bit sport that does not connect with the emotions of football
Positives
The world cup is only weeks a way and we have a real chance to enjoy our football up to the next semi final of a major football tournament.
all in all i am disapointed but nothing else
i aint going to slate anyone on their performance tonight they gave it ago we didnt get over the line ultimately 1 pass and 1 kick denied us a chance to go to wembley we were better than swindon and in all honesty we have been better than most clubs in this league all season the good teams havent beaten us it was the small shitty ones that did great teams dont fall to them good teams do though we just didnt have enough to get us through.
we have enjoyed the playoff pens before karma said it was our turn to endure it this time
one thing that is for certain and i truely believe it is that our time will come again it is just going to take longer than i wanted
thought Mooney had his best game for us tonight but still hope he isn't here next season. Thought Racon put in the sort of performance that he should have been doing all season and maybe if he had things might be different. Dailly, Semedo and Richardson dependable as always and Reid and Burton were outstanding. Bailey seemed out of sorts again but it wasn't his fault we lost. Don't agree with those who thought Swindon a poor team. Did what they had to do and even with ten men carved out some very good chances especially the one the young lad missed. Thought we lost it at half-time because we didn't appear for the second half with the same intensity and seemed content that at 2-0 and a man over it was all done and dusted. I always believed Swindon would score and it wasn't until they did that we seemed to raise our game again. Oh well, it wasn't meant to be. Gonna be an interesting, and depressing, summer.
Agree Llera was right to do what he did. Had to be done, couldn't risk them scoring.
When are we going to get a break, when will something go our way for a change? I'm worried where we'll go from here. Without a big takeover, like it or not, we will have to lower expectations. Without investment, mid table will be a good season.
20 attempts on target to Swindon's 8. Hit the post twice in extra time & missed a sitter right at the end.
I can scarcely believe we have gone out after that performance. Good luck to Swindon, but I thought they'd almost given up at one stage in the second half & then it all suddenly changes.
In common with the vast majority of those who frequent this site, I will be there next season & I will look forward to each & every game.
But deep down I now fear what the future holds for our great club & that is what will keep me awake tonight.
They tried tonight, but it just never felt like we were actually going to win did it? Like many others will no doubt say too, i had a bad feeling when Bailey stepped up...We let them back in when we should have finished them off but to me it looked like a side who didnt really believe they could do it either. We have suffered for some very poor results earlier in the season (Orient, Brighton, Gills at home all stand out) that left us in this position, and i dont think anyone can really say we deserved to go up.
Will be an interesting summer, and im sure tonight will be the last time we see some of those players in our colours - Semedo in particular, also Racon (both were very good tonight), neither have had a very easy time of it with us, but i hope they go on to good things elsewhere. Bailey too.
Looked very equal teams over the TWO legs, but my god you did have some chances tonight and should've have really been ahead by more. But then again, Swindon had some cracking chances last Friday.
When you need that little bit of luck, like Burton's swivel shot dribbling wide or Richardson's shot clipping the outside rather the inside of the post, you just didn't have it tonight.
Unlucky tonight, you'll be there or thereabouts again next year, but like ourselves won't have the money to invest and we've gotta worry about Huddersfield, Brighton, Southampton etc spending more money and taking those top two spots.
[cite]Posted By: Sparrows Lane Lion[/cite]They deserved the win Friday and got it.

Your lot are odds-on now, mate.
You will batter Huddersfield tomorrow and then you've got Swindon at Wembley whose best centre-half is suspended and whose centre-forward (Painter) has done his hamstring.
If Millwall blow it from here then they will be even more gutted than us!

Difference is you wont lose most of your first team if you don't go up....we will be, that's the problem.
[cite]Posted By: Dazzler21[/cite]Bailey lost the ball for their goal and skied the penalty... But it's not his fault nice one!
or maybe it was Burton's fault for his miss, or Forster for his. Or maybe it was because of the missed chances at Yeovil, or Parky's defence minded tactics throughout the season or, or or. It's a team game and you win or lose together. Tonight we lost, for whatever reason, but the blame isn't down to one person.
Mooney and Reid were EXCELLENT and deserved their ovations. They both ran like hell - wanted the ball, and showed some lovely touches. The second goal was a peach. Most others looked up for it, and if we'd played like this all season we'd have won the league no question. Some lovely bits of football at times, played on the floor. Sam shirking that tackle was pitiful, and tho he did a few decent things, overall he was poor seems like he's lazy/has no confidence/completely unfit -= maybe all 3?!
Llera was right to do that - he had to. Thought Richardson, Semedo and Dailly were all excellent. Bailey less so - just a bit too slapdash.
Great atmosphere (tho was in the North Upper) and a cracking game of football.
Can't be arsed to think of the future right now, to be honest.
I'm completely gutted, each time I think we've reached our lowest ebb there is something around the corner to remind me that we we're incredibly fortunate to have the run we did up the top tier of English football.
I'm empty, I'll be back next season without a doubt but that really, really hurt tonight.
There is no justice in football and to pepper the goal like we did and not score is all the more galling and cruel.
I'm at work in 5 hours so I'm now off to stare at the ceiling and think of what could have been
All my fault. I booked my flight home for the final yesterday. Don't know why I couldn't wait.
Watched it on a very good internet feed, crowd sounded magnificent. Wish I could have been there.
On my second bottle of wine, the numbness is getting worse.
We had so many bloody chances. Someone said the game changed after Llera got sent off (should have been a yellow, Dailly was close), but we had 3 great chances in first half of ET.
They were a threat on the break and they have some excellent and pacy front players but we should have won, 25+ goal attempts?
But we didn't win. Not sure where we go now. I, like others feel very battle-worn and the scars are getting worse. Richard Murray must be hurting tonight.
Time for some soul searching another day though. Proud to be Charlton.
I didn't book a flight home and probably wouldn't have made it anyway but feel absolutely gutted this morning even though I took the going to bed and waking up this morning to find out what happened option. My heart was beating so fast as I switched the computer on and my jaw dropped to find out we had lost on penalties of all things.
And whilst taking it in I received a text from my Swindon supporting mate from Perth saying he was gutted as he had lost 100 backs after betting on a full-time draw on the night!
Would love to have been there. I've been a lucky omen in the few games I have seen since I've been in Thailand.
well went to bed at 12.30 awake at 4 can't sleep and feel violently sick.I could take this if i knew we would mount another challenge next season, but we wont and im scared shitless for my club.

same here although i lasted till 5am and then the ridiculous amount of chocolate i consumed to numb the pain made a quick exit from my lower regions
at least we can't lose to millwall in the final now, although they were the only team i fancied us to beat in the play offs for some bizarre reason!
my phone started beeping with a couple of texts from millwall associates soon after full time
but fair play to the others they'll be waiting till they get promoted b4 they give it but it is understandable, they have been in our shadow for a long time and it has been 35 years since they have been in a league above us....
how depressing

fair enough, thought it went stale 50-70 tonight from North Lower
I agree that Sam was great defensively today - Burton was immense, Bailey excelled too, although why he did he pass it into traffic and not the space, which ultimately led to their goal? In the first half I felt we needed another.

Richardson - Dailly - Sodje - Youga
Wagstaff - ???? - ???? - ????
Burton - Mooney

No real complaints; over the season as a whole we weren't quite good enough although we gave it a decent shot.
Now the worrying starts re the off field stuff.
We had our chances throughout the season but hands up who thought we were good enough?
Hope isn't enough.
