The Leeds Fans

edited May 2010 in General Charlton
From what I saw, I thought were a credit to their Club.

No grief, no hint of trouble, accepted defeat gracefully, those in our end were respectful. Not that loud, but I expect nerves played a part in that.

Nice to hear them cheering a Millwall defeat as well.

  • 100% agree with this. I had 4 Leeds fans within touching distance of where I was in the North Upper and all, as you say, were a credit to their club.
  • Overall they were fine, although it was funny to hear them go quiet after the goal. Was there trouble in the East stand near the Jimmy Seed.

I dont like fans in the wrong end however i could really understand their need to see the game, the ones near me were supporting their team more vocally maybe than yours in the nth however they did not over step the line had they scored this may not have been the case so no matter how much of a credit they were to their club, our club should look into how many were there and how did they get in there,

some of those near me wore colours under jackets and others just looked nthn me and unc spotted a few in the west lower looked at eachother and said notherners we didnt here them speak but they had oasis haircuts and a nothern swagger.

2 of them got slung out near the end so we were spot on for very little to be fair

it could go very titts if we pull millsmall out in the playoffs so imo the club need to up their game on this big time
  • said elsewhere but I thought the reception they gave to Richardson even at the end in defeat was first class, nice to see an old player receive such a response and be held in such high reagrd.
  • At the end of the game there was also a lot of affection for Sodje, Richardson and Dailly

What do you suggest - we sell tickets to season-ticket holders only and make them prove their identity at the turnstiles?

All the evidence suggests that away supporters get in because Charlton fans buy them tickets. The restrictions already aggravate non season-ticket holders and have led to the exclusion of legitimate but lapsed Charlton fans. They reduce the crowd. The tighter the restrictions, the lower the crowd. Less atmosphere, less money.

It's a balancing act and always will be. We know we will have a real challenge if we play Millwall in either the semi or the final, but it's not about the club "upping its game".
  • Agree with all this. Was pleasantly suprised. Fair play to them.
  • In which case whats the problem with at kick off, start finding away fans, booting them out and banning the people that bought them tickets.

Do the club really want to be responsible for one of their own innocent fans getting seriously hurt.

fair point airman but if i could spot them it begs the question as to why those that are supposed to didnt, at one point 4 stewards entered the west lower to challenge 4 young addicks over taunting leeds when they nearly scored yet walked past 6 leeds fans to do it was pretty obvious they were leeds as every leeds move they applauded every charlton attack they sat still

just beacuse something is difficult doesnt mean that it should just be left alone surely, there was atleast 20 leeds in and around me shouting support for their team in block H of the west i believe there are boxes along there, potentially a flash point is all i am trying to highlight
  • From the north upper just after KO, I could see police horses chasing after leeds fans by the flats in Sam Bartram close. Didn't look too serious, could have done with the Benny Hill music accompanying it!

  • you couldnt even report it without making it obvious to any other leeds fans in there what you were doing, you had no stewards in the concourse other than those in orange jackets who didnt care they showed 3 of them where the toilet was even though 1 of them had a leeds scarf on maybe it is a suggestion to have more senior stewards below in the concourses so that anyone who wants to can report away fans in the wrong end
  • I think the Club do as much as they can preventing away fans in the home end.

Unfortunately I don't think the Club do anything near enough in removing those away fans who openly and vociferously support the away team from home areas.

It's amazing that the Club can have three or four stewards standing in each stand entrance when we play Tranmere, yet can only offer one 5 foot woman steward when we play Millwall. Instead of concentrating on the Jimmy Seed Stand, more stewards should be made available in home areas to deal with those intent on vociferously supporting their team and intimidating innocent home fans.
  • there was a few leeds fans near me in the top part of the lowere west near the directors box and they were ok nothing untoward and got told to watch themselves by the security people ...
there was a few millwall there as well one piped up after the semedo song was sang and said you wish you played as good as them .. i told him yeah for this season maybe but not for the rest of my life ....
a mate i know who does security said some charlton fans had pointed me out to him for being a leeds fan lol .... near the end i just wanted a goal and obvioulsy preferring us to score it wouldn't have been the end of the world if leeds had scored!

we're gonna do millwall in the play offs you heard it here first

thats the point i mean ticketing is harder to police than actually watching the areas we are fully cctvd up we had enough stewards near the pitch yet not 1 spotted any leeds in our area until gone 80 mins yet none of them hid some even waving to pals in the jimmy seed infront of the same stewards who went and spoke to 4 spotty addicks behind the same leeds fans

but once noted why were they not removed it is not fair that if i was to reminstrate there is a good chance of it kicking off when theclub have not done enough to remove them
  • 100% disagree with the post. I can accept away fans if they keep quiet but the woman behind me had the biggest trap ever. Caught her making hand signals behind mates back an called us all losers when we scored... In fact all of us will always be losers. Her words.

Oh how we celebrated that goal.

Two goals you only need two goals... Fantastic you lovely red men.

I've been saying that for ages mate ... and I'm sure we will ... if we meet them.

But I think we will get Swindon in semis and Hudds in final
  • If fans are behaving themselves why grass them up....I only have a problem with away fans in home areas if they are 'giving it large.'
However, where Spanners are concerned, it's a totally different matter.......LOLI .

b we were sat with kyle reids family and i didnt want to put them in an awkward position plus there was numerous kids with them and unc had his little un also i was in work seats so i really had to keep my gob shut it didnt ruin my celebration when we scored i gave it them big time but it was a potential flash point,

if you were outside the oak with tav when i went by you could have molested jonjo he was stuck in the car in front waiting for the level crossing to go up
  • yes we had kids with us so all very tame.

I was stuck inside the oak unable to move forwards or back. The weather really messed things up after.

  • Fair enough, I read NLA's comment as a criticism they had got tickets. What happens inside the ground once they are there is a different issue. However, the policing/stewarding objective is to minimise trouble. It isn't necessarily the right tactic to remove all away supporters and we may not have had the resources to do it anyway.
  • I have certainly attended away matches and have sat in the home areas. I don't "give it large" although I suspect body language does give it away to those closest. I cannot for the life of me see what is wrong with this or away fans at The Valley who also behave respectfully.

    Couldn't agree more.
  • Away fans in home areas annoys the hell out if me. Probably irrational, but it annoys me, end of.

Correct me if I am wrong, but there is a large sign above the east stand turnstyles which proclaims "Home Supporters Only". Why then whilst I was troughing my burger did I watch 4 Leeds blokes in colours stroll up to the turnstyles and walk in without being challenged?.

  • Annoys me too, its like someone coming in your house univited.........
  • However I dont begrudge respectful when tickets are sparse or there isnt enough.......

I rememeber a chelsea match where it was crawling with them, really annoyed me...

dont begrudge people who sit on their hands......

Because I guess their presecence creates the potential for a flash point. I don't want to sit watching a game knowing that if the oppo score, these blokes who have been behaving up to that point, could potentially explode and start giving it. We have enough idiots following us who would pile in if that happens.

Sad fact is we will never get to a situation where segrgation doesn't exist. Football is emotive and brings out the worst in many - I include myself in that.

How many of the Leeds fans sitting in homes areas would have been behaving respectfully if that 87th minute winner had gone it at the other end?. Not many I can tell you.
