[cite]Posted By: northstandsteve[/cite]ok what you said mate, i dont like this glastonbury clique that's me done, i'll leave this site know and await the please come back steve thread :-) by the way im 39 and never bloody heard of willie nelson (did he used to play centre half for arsenal sorry nope thats willie young),ray davies, george clinton ( is he bill's brother ) or Jerry Dammers so what ever age i am i've never been uni.How old are you Leroy ? Just one question did you go uni :-)
Willie Nelson is probably the most famous country & western singer ever to have lived other than Johnny Cash
George Clinton was in Parliament - the greatest funk band ever
Jerry Dammers was the main man in The Specials

    I'm 36

    Yep.
  • there you go you went to uni enough said

Aye. I studied Geology. I guess being intelligent is enough to mark me out as an elitist c***, right? Despite the fact I've already told you I like four, five bands maximum on the lineup this year?
  • your language is quite disgusting chill man chill :-)
  • Fair one, you get ton's of varied acts at Glastonbury but you couldn't possibly host an event that size and not have a hell of a lot of variety.

Not my brew personally but I can appreciate the appeal of it. Maybe students get more time to listen and digest the music on offer?
  • This thread is funny. Steve suzi would know all these bands. Dont think she elitist. Just some people more into music an know their onions. Me im clueless too. What or who is xx?
  • [quote][cite]Posted By: carly burn[/cite]What is it with muse. Not a big fan myself but have a huge live following. However i'm yet to meet anyone who actually admits to liking their music or owning their albums.[/quote]

I admit to liking muse. And i own there albums but there new one isnt great. Watched them last night. Apart from the u2 bit was entertaining. The front man oozes musical talent.

  • Muse are awesome, best live band around and possibly ever, fact.
  • Muse were excellent last night (I didn't go to uni....have all their albums and have past half century in age).
  • You can't complain because you don't recognise bands - the youngsters will always be more up on it than us old'uns. I bet your parents said the same thing about your music, NSS. It's part of being young, get over it.

...and as for this 'university conspiracy theory', yes you are right. I saw someone trying to buy a Muse album yesterday being refused until they could show a university ID card. It's a scandal, I tell thee.

PS I have never been a massive fan, but everytime I see Muse live on TV I get jealous and wish I was there. They looked pretty awesome last night from where I was sitting! (i.e on the sofa at home). But they probably went to university, the elitist swine, so I should probably hate them, shouldn't I?
  • Face it Steve, you're just getting old.
  • Turned on the catch up TV this morning and saw Shakira...I certainly wouldn't push her aside to get to Ann Widdecombe, nearly had a heart attack over me cornflakes, loved her. Also saw Dizzy Rascal on catch up, thought he was good too, and some group called Mumford and Sons who were absolutely great. Florence and the machine were poor because she couldn't sing in tune....thought she was trying too hard to do too much, and could've learned from Shakira, stick to the music. Saw a group I have never heard of called hot chip, were Ok, and also saw kate nash do one song, and tried to do a one woman version of the Who during their smash things up phase, thought that was good. I like Glastonbury on the telly...it's free.
  • Would love to have gone to Glasto again but can't afford it and most of my mates now wouldn't enjoy camping because we are all getting a bit older and have different priorities. I thought the line up looked great this year and no I didn't go to Uni but wish I had, a good education opens many doors.

Muse imo are not bad live. I'm not really a fan but my fella seems to love them and they don't annoy me. I can appreciate some of their stuff is very good but for some reason I wouldn't buy any of their albums. They grabbed a N.E.R.D fan wearing a N.E.R.D t-shirt and made him dance on stage with them at V a few years back. Poor fella looked very awkward which was quite amusing. Didn't seem to want to let him leave.
  • Thing is Steve, with the best will in the world, rock festivals are not exactly targeted at 11 year old girls are they? You saying your daughter wouldn't recognise any of the music on show at Glastonbury is hardly surprising - or do you expect Miley Cyrus, The Wiggles or the latest shite from X Factor to share a stage with real music, aimed at adults?
  • Ray Davies.

    Superb !
  • Faithless still have it!

Bit disappointed to find out that Maxi Jazz is a Palace fan though.
  • ok got done im too old enough said

  • What's all this rubbish about students and elitism as a reason for not knowing the bands. And people thought my 'goalkeeper touches' on the other thread was crazy!
  • Stevie Wonder's had some HRT I think!
  • [cite]Posted By: Miserableold-ish git[/cite]Ray Davies.

    Superb !

Agreed, MoG .........can't believe so many people on here haven't heard of him, legendary in the music business.
Huge influence on music from the mid-60s onwards and still performing.

Nobody ever heard of the Kinks?
  • So many people go to Glastonbury and think it's just a big bands music fest. That's only one part of it.
    They miss so much.

It's like several, almost separate festivals running adjacent to each other ..........

    - Loads of culture and creativity going on in the circus & performers field - drama, comedy, caberet, street theatre, mime
    - Acoustic tent high up on the hill for contempary, folk and blues addicts
    - Dance Tent/Everglades for those pumped up to dance all night
    - Alternative technology and other ways of living
    - Gardening field, vegetable and flower growing
    - Green Fields up on the hill, full of art, crafts and Tiny Tea Tent type cafes with their own tiny stage inside,
    - Lost Vegas village in a random field where you have to really search for it
    - Workshops for people who want to improve their creative, artistic, music or specialist dance skills - or just try it out
    - Great entertainment specially for kids in the Children's Field

Loads of stuff that you'd never see on the telly.

You'd be surprised at the number of people who go to Glastonbury and never go down into 'Babylon' (the big market area near the pyramid stage) ..... and not interested in the big name bands on the Pyramid stage.

But they know what they like. And that's what makes Glastonbury such a great festival - there's something for everybody.
  • Great post Oggy and yes I have heard of The Kinks, they're one of my favourite bands. I will have to try and catch Ray Davies on the iPlayer.

Only went once and that was during the storm of 2007.
  • Love the Kinks / Ray Davies but his voice was very weak.
Thought it bit sad listening to those classics when his voice seemed shot IMHO.

Although not as bad as Micheal Eavis's !!!
  • just got back

best one I've been to since 95

Great bands , amazing weather .

Must admit though that the best thing I saw all weekend was Scroobius Pip doing poetry in the orange stage last night (despite him being a millwall fan)
  • That was top-notch and I'd refer anyone to Oggy's post who wants to try to understand what it's really about and it's moved on even more than what he knows about it.

NSS: There is also a massive selection of electronica including old-school house, acid, etc.

It is pretty much 10 festivals in one and you'd have to work hard to have a bad time there (unless you hate camping, the weather is shite or you are generally a "let's not enjoy this" type of person. That said, as with anything, it's not for everyone. I fooking love it.
  • [cite]Posted By: Sco[/cite]That was top-notch and I'd refer anyone to Oggy's post who wants to try to understand what it's really about and it's moved on even more than what he knows about it.

    Cheers, Sco.

I've done 11 Glastonbury's in my time - and strangely, have worked every single one.

Unfortunately, work commitments and stuff have meant I've not been since 2003, although know loads of people, friends and my son who go still, so have a good idea of what's happening - they'll all drift back today and onwards in various states of exhaustion, disrepair and 'festivaled out' from a long weekend of partying!
  • I didn't go this year - first one i've missed since 2002. The last three days have been tough going. I'm completely gutted that I didn't go. Watching England limp out of the World Cup, then watching Stevie Wonder smash it on the Pyramid Stage just about rounded off a f**king awful weekend for me.

Even my mum and her sister went this year.

    B*stards.
