[quote][cite]Posted By: Redmidland[/cite]Hi this is the first time I've started a discussion so forgive me if this has already been done or previously discussed. I was looking at another forum and noticed someone had posted some comments (yesterday) about the current plight of Clive Mendonca. I'm not sure of the source or how accurate but just wanted to let Lifers know.
Part of what the poster wrote I have replicated below for you to read-:

"Apparently, he's now skint and jobless, and was last seen doing some sort of body double work for a football advert...

Obviously we don't know the circumstances behind his fall (which incidently mirrors ours as a club) but surely if it's true something could be done??

We gave him a testimonial didn't we vs. NEC Nijmegan I think?

Surely the club could give Clive a role in the 'Legends' style events?

Failing this either a bucket collection ( where we collect money for him... not buckets )"

    End of quote.

Anyone know what exactly has happened, I looked on ebay and he is selling some of his CAFC memorabilila, including his winners medal from the Play-off final.[/quote]

Can you tell us which forum you saw this on? If so can you post the link as there may be more info about Super Clive since the initial post. Ta.
  • I can only think it's the Gg's!!
  • If super Clive is doing body doubles for footballers can't we employ him until the end of the season as a body double for one of our strikers, he could not do any worse.

This is why I didn't put it on here when I first heard.

We know he's planning to sell some stuff. That is all.

The speculation about being hard up or spending it on the horses is just that, speculation and IMHO not very helpful.

Let's give a little respect to a legend and not speculate because we know that what was a said quite innocently and without malice as a "maybe" today will be repeated as "fact" tomorrow here and on other sites.
  • Peter Reid was going to bid for the medal, but he was too busy peeling banana's with his feet at the time...
  • [quote][cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite][quote][cite]Posted By: queensland_addick[/cite]And coming soon an evening with Curbs & Super Clive. That should be a good ![/quote]

It was on the BBC Charlton message boards. As I said not sure of the source or the real situaiton, but just wanted to share what I had seen.

Sorry Henry didnt mean to start a whole load of unhelpful speculation i posted in good faith.

    Link is http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A65201483
  • Sad news indeed and i guess he like many or that era and before get tarred with the mega buck pay deals of today
  • wasn't having a go at you Redmidland.

It's a Charlton story and so you were right to post it on here. Hope you post plenty more.

It's just that people read it and then start speculating, as I said, without malice but that can then get misreported as fact and all other sorts of spin is then added to the story.

As Dartford said he played in an era before big deals and spent a lot of time at clubs like Grimsby and Rotherham were he'd not have been paid a lot. Doubt he was on that much at Charlton and then his career ended fairly early.

Anyway since it's now out there does anyone want to contribute to buying some of the boots, medal or shirt?

IF and it is a BIG IF they are offered the idea I had was to buy one of more of the items and then loan them to the club for display. They would still be owned by whoever bought them and could be reclaimed at anytime. As I said Bromley Addicks are willing to put some cash up.

Fully understand if people either can't or don't want to contribute
  • Henry....need you ask....I'm straight in there put my name at the top of the list for a nice few quid.
Let's talk about this when things are nailed on and we know for sure where it's going.
C Lifers will see this project (should it come about) through to the bitter end.............. of that I'm 100% certain.

I see quite a lot of him actually, usually in the Roker Hotel or coming out of Ladbrokes with the Sporting Life under his arm...

Clive Mendonca was a true Charlton legend that deserved every accolade bestowed upon him, it's a shame his career ended when it did, I think he had plenty more to give...

I just hope any dosh he gets from the sale of his medals etc is used thoughtfully and sets him on the road to fiancial recovery....
