Akpo Sodje deal

edited March 2010 in General Charlton
as mentioned elsewhere by Golfie there is a deal on the table for Sodje subject to him playing a certain number of games. Is Parky going to lumber us with having to sign this clown player even though (hopefully) he might not be there himself next season. Will the Board allow him to ensure Sodje gets a contract even though he is obviously not good enough. Now if we were League 2 .....

  • Surely the board must know he is toilet and will ensure he does not stay.

Next season we could lose Burton and A Sodje and Mooney could be ours permanently! As if this weekend has not been bad enough
  • I really hope we don't sign him. If we stay down we'll struggle to find anyone that much better anyway. Such an awkward player, one of those strikers you feel when he does well, it's through luck rather than skill or a football brain, much like McLeod really. Do wonder how he ended up in the Championship and was useful for Sheffield Wednesday, looks very average in this league nevermind a level above.
  • He would be able to get away with purely relying on his strength and size if he had a football brain, however judging by his 'shot' on Saturday which nearly cleared the stand when we had a very decent 3 on 3 opportunity this sadly isn't the case.
  • Funny one really, if we stay in this league will certainly be good enough to stay :-(

see im no fan of akpo but think he will score a few at this level, on saturday he was absolute toilet and i still dont rate him but before he did score in last 3 games so shows he is capable, for someone that size needs to learn to header! so frustrating, on saturday never looked like scoring or threatening.
  • Agree with Johnny, i think he is absolute pony, one of the worst strikers we've ever had but he can/will score goals at this level. You only have to look at Colchester with the likes of Clive Platt and Odejayi - both total sh*t but big lumps will occasionally get you goals in this league.
  • He is the tallest guy in the side - and he hardly ever wins a header.

His goal against Yeovil was quality, but his goal against Brighton was meaningless.

    I would say - don't sign him.

No one is that bad. But Sodje is comparable, that shot he had on saturday went about 30 yards over!
  • Am I the only person that thinks Akpo will have a decent season for us? I know he's come in for some stick but I really hope everyone gets behind him and think he could easily chip in with 10 - 12 goals. May even back him first goalscorer tomorrow!
  • He's not a prolific scorer and never will be... if he reaches double figures in league goals and causes a bit of mayhem with his presence and direct awkward style then he's done his job 100%.

i think he deserves a full chance a good pre season and injury free and a run of starts lets see what he can do
  • I also think he will have a good season. If he stays fit. He got a few goals last season without really being fully fit.
  • he certainly looked like he cared more than Mooney did last year. Might not be full of ability but puts the wind up defenders

Yeah I have a good feeling about him too, although it's start of season excitment really.
  • I thought I was the only one fed up with all the Akpo bashing - glad I have some allies

He may not have perfect technique but he is a real handful, is a great battering ram and I'm pretty sure he'd be into double figures if he starts the majority of games

We are 3rd tier and he's a good player at this level.

I am an Akpo fan too, he is a wholehearted player who is a real threat at this level imo. Swisdom's last line sums it up for me.
  • Kakpo will not make double figures in league goals for us......
He has a touch so bad it's embarassing at times
I hope billy smart or whoever keeps him out of the team, if he is a regular we won't go up imo
  • He's got to be backup at best, although he featured alot in pre-season (not much choice really!) so scarily, he might start as first choice.....

and if all he scores is ten goals then we won't get promoted. And he'd have to play every minute of every game to do so. As oohah says his touch is appalling or, as my Dad would say, he couldn't trap a bag of cement. Hopefully he'll be back up to Abbott, Martin, Benson, Bally, Waggy, Reid, McCormack, Semedo, Racon, Dailly, Llera ........
  • Keep banging your drum, Large. We get the message that you don't rate Akpo.

oh, you've spotted that ? I'll stop now then.
  • He's the Drogba of league 1.
  • Large mate go and get yourself a nice tipple and have a relax, if you can't be remotely optimistic or glass even a tiny weeny bit full when everyone has zero points I feel this may be your peak this season. Everyone deserves a chance, whether they've been in the academy 12 years or they are from Timbuktu. Aim number one is get out of this division, let whichever 11 players be them white black or bloody green put that shirt on and show us what they've got on the pitch.

    Promise ....?

I don't believe you. If Akpo doesn't play, I'm sure you'll find another 'victim'!

    ;o)
  • Akpo is useful at this level, almost always worries defenders. True he doesn't have a great touch, and isn't the most intelligent of players, but if he was he'd still be in the Championship at the very least.

Ideally he's a squad player, just like Llera and probably McCormack, and every team needs a few players like that. Happy to fight for their place, and you know what you're going to get from them when they do play.

I'm not really a fan of players like Akpo, but he does have something to offer. His goal record wasn't bad last season with us.
  • A song for our last remaining Sodje. I won't be there today unfortunately but I thought Large could be the first to sing it out. OK?

    Akpo, there's only one Akpo
We told his bro to go, his knees began to slow, now we're just left with Akpo.

    Akpo, there's only one Akpo,
There's many Sodje's cos we know
His poor old mum could not say no.

    Akpo, there's only one Akpo
Some say it's time to go
    Leeds know that isn't so
    Please score again though Akpo
  • quick , someone call the ivor novellos
  • What we need are more games played in extreme weather conditions and against 10 men, as he was pretty useful when he came on at Yeovil!

It's horses for courses, and as others have said he's a third tier player and that's where we're playing.

He scored a few last year, so if he can stay fit - which seems to have been a big issue in recent seasons - then he hopefully can have an impact.
