  • Elliot - 7
    Richardson - 6
    Dailly - 6
    S Sodje - 6
    Sam - 6
    Semedo - 5
    Racon - 5
    Bailey - 5
    Burton - 5
    A Sodje - 4
    Solly - 5
    Mooney - 6
    Reid - 7

Elliott made a couple of really good saves and couldn't do anything about the goals. Reid looked lively when he came on and I thought Mooney tried.

Despite the goal I thought Racon was poor and Sodje didn't do much to earn a perm contract at the end of the season.

That said, he might be all we can afford if we start again in League 1. What a chilling thought.
  • Elliot - 8 Couldn't have done much better.
Richardson - 6 Tried his best to get things going. Very exposed in the air as usual.
Dailly - 6.5 Our best defender. Sodje's mistake sold him short for the 2nd goal.
S Sodje - 5 Got to get out of his habit for getting under the ball. Could be so good but can't help thinking if Llera had made that mistake he would've been dropped. Won't be surprised if Sodje is left out on Saturday.
Sam - 6 Created our one real chance (Bailey's 2nd half skier) but struggled a bit.
Semedo - 6.5 Our best midfielder. Unlucky to be subbed.
Racon - 5 The goal gets him an extra mark. For all the fluff (the shots from the edge of the box and the fancy backheels) he was a non-entity. And if you have a centre-midfield non-entity in a physical game, you'll lose. Maybe the goal will lift him....but he could be lucky to stay in the side.
Bailey - 6 Tried his best but didn't make an impact. Wish Racon had been subbed for Reid early on so Bailey could move inside where he is needed.
Burton - 5.5 His worst game for a long while. Totally out-gunned by Steve Elliott. Tried as ever but made little impact.
A Sodje - 5 Could have been subbed earlier. Tries..but he looks non-leagueish at times to me.
Solly - 6.5 Tough start but stuck to it and was blossoming by the end. The boy has definitely got something about him.
Mooney - 6 Moved well but a bit lightweight. Did get a hell of a bump on his swede late on...came up like an egg!
Reid - 7 Hindsight is a wonderful thing but he's a good footballer and should have started. He'll be back in on Saturday.

Parky 6 - Dealt a tough hand with the Basey injury. At least tried to force the game by keeping his most attacking players on the pitch but shouldn't let the non-red card cloud his judgement on what was a woeful performance. He's honest and he'll know what needs to be done.

Definitely the worst I've seen Deon play, Solly was a very slow starter but picked it up towards the end and was less of a problem than Frazer who Sam had to protect as well as be our biggest threat going forward. Reid caused a few problems as soon as he came on but then faded.

From the tv, so less valid than being there - but here goes. It gives no pleasure but I honestly don't think any of the six marks below a five are in the least unfair: -

  • I really find it hard to fathom people's scoring system. How can a player be called 'headless chicken' and then get a score of 5/10? For me, headless chicken is 1 or 2, poor is 3 or 4, average is 5 or 6, and stupendous Rooney/Ronaldo on top hat-trick form is 9 or 10. So -

  • Elliot - 7 - Couple of good saves
    Richardson - 5
    Dailly - 5
    S Sodje - 5
Sam - 5.5 - Only offensive player who looked remotely threatening, the small amount of stuff we created came from him.
Semedo - 6 - Few good tackles, but left a bit exposed by his midfield partners.
Racon - 5.5 - 1 for the goal, otherwise pretty poor.
Bailey - 4 - Think he's been poor for a few weeks, but has rescued himself and us with important goals. Quiet last night, except when taking the wrong option and trying to spray 60 yard passes (inacurately) at every opportunity and no goal to mask the defficiencies. I'd consider resting him.
Burton - 4.' - Marked out of it by a lump. Showed a few nice touches when we gave him the ball to feet but he just didn't get on the ball enough.
A Sodje - 3 - More I see of him the more I think he's a complete carthorse. Not given up on him yet and don't intend to but he's got a lot of proving to do in my eyes.
    Solly - 5
Mooney - 5 - Better than Sodje, at least he has a first touch, but still pretty ineffective.
Reid - 4 - Not sure why he was dropped but didn't really get in the game as a sub.

For me, headless chicken is 1 or 2, poor is 3 or 4, average is 5 or 6, and stupendous Rooney/Ronaldo on top hat-trick form is 9 or 10

That's the problem, Nadou. Because everybody has a different formula for marking or even some have no system at all, it gets pretty random.

For example, quite a lot people marked Sam last night at 6 or 7 (which IMO was around his true worth), others marked him around a 5 (okay) ....... but then some marked Sam 2 out of 10. Now that seems to me that they either have no understanding of actually playing the game - or they just can't stand the player anyway, so it's nothing to do with his actual performance during the match.

So it's all pretty random and meaningless, unfortunately. But it gives us something to do on a Monday morning.

Oggy said of those who dished out low marks for last night's debacle : ''They either have no understanding of actually playing the game - or they just can't stand the player anyway, so it's nothing to do with his actual performance during the match.''

To be fair Oggy old fruit, the same accusation could be levelled at you in the opposite direction.

You accused Asbo Sodje of being ''mad, sometimes sheer loony'' and of making an 'idiot challenge'' - and yet he still gets a 5 from you, which on your own marking system you say means he was ''okay''.

Bailey you gave an improbable 7 , because however poor he was ''you can't fault him for effort'' .

Akpoor Sodje had ''no composure'' you say, but still merited a 5. So presumably his lack of composure is also deemed to be ''okay''?

Sorry, I'm with Nadou. I read his post and realised my own (fairly low) markings were actually over generous.

    Hi Incorruptible,

Actually, I don't consider 5 okay, I consider it poor. However in the context of using Sam as a specific example, I posted:
    [cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]
For example, quite a lot people marked Sam last night at 6 or 7 (which IMO was around his true worth), others marked him around a 5 (okay) ....... but then some marked Sam 2 out of 10.

As in the context of most posters marking him 6 or 7 (6 - average or 7 - good) , but as in okay I understood why some marked him as low as 5.. My point was intended to draw attention to the fact that most people rated him more or less fairly and others lampooned him because they just don't like him, regardless of how he actually played during that match. Reading again what I wrote, I can see how it came across differently to what I intended though - so sorry it was ambiguous.

Sam Sodje I gave as 5 (poor in my marking system) - but my comments explained why. He was sometimes crazy, indisciplined, but he did a fair number of good things too.

Bailey was awarded a 7 (good in my marking system) because he tried very hard to get involved, get things moving and carry responsibility and vitally covered a jittery Solly in the 1st half. Another day, that penalty would have been given, one of the shots he had may have gone in, whatever. Sure his touch wasn't good and he tried to do too much himself - but "you can't fault him for effort".

Akpoor was marked 5 - poor. But even though he had an overall poor game and a shocking first touch, he was always trying to get in the right positions and still a handful for defenders. If he'd taken his 2 clear chances he would have had rated higher. And then perhaps hailed as a match winner, if that had eventually been the case.

Sorry I felt I needed to explain myself.

I'm not going to bother marking, all I can say is we still haven't learnt anything from previous seasons, the tinkering and constant use of loanees is undermining us just as much as it did when Pardew was here. I'm afraid it's groundhog day again.
  • I do think he's been tinkering too much Tel, but only one loan player started yesterday. He was swapped for another at half-time and a second joined him from the bench later on - I think most teams in League 1 have at least that many loanees.
  • Yeah the loanee thing isn't really the problem. We needed an option on the left and Reid on loan was probably one of the few options. Up front Parky knew McLeod and Dickson were never going to be good enough. I don't rate Mooney or Akpo that highly but I can undertand why he signed them.

Agree he tweaking the team a little too much. I think we need to go back to 451 with a settled team, this time with 2 wingers now we have Reid (or even McKenzie who can switch to up front) and start keeping clean sheets. Or at least stop going 1-0 down, it's getting harder and harder to get back from that.

You overlook the impact loanees have on squad players behind the scenes, not necessarily on the field....look at the morale issues we have had in the past 3 seasons....Im sure its not just me who thinks that they suddenly dont look like they are up for it....I really want Parky to turn this around, but its all looking a little too familiar for me right now.
  • Elliot - 8 Great saves first half kept us in the game
Richardson - 5.5 gets forward well, never looks up though and ran into too many blind alleys
Dailly - 5.5 Movement ok, but let striker with his back to goal have time and space to do whatever he wanted
S Sodje - 5 Big off day for Big Sam
Sam - 6 A brighter second half than first
Semedo - 5.5 did a job but not a great one
Racon - 5.5 Drifted in and out of game
Bailey - 6 Under par, needs to step up again, didnt see him shouting/cajoling/motivating rest of team (he's captain FFS)
Burton - 5.5 Ball didnt stick to Burton, his performance made Heffernans look even more impressive
A Sodje - 4.5 Did put himself about enough, he and Burton looked like they had only ever played upfront on their own.
Solly - 5.5 Took ages to get into the game, lost out from ball over his head, but performance improved in game
Mooney - 5 Failed to assert himself
Reid - 5 Worked hard, but failed to make real difference
