"Hales or Mendonca? Hales in fight obviously but as a finisher?"
Well I never saw the very, very best of Hales, so I'd have to go for Mendonca. When he made the space for his first at Wembley it was the first time that I ever KNEW that a Charlton player would score.
As for the other point, I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere (don't ask me where) that Super Clive in fact had a reputation in his younger days for more than able to look after himself....
Mendonca spent his entire career having seven shades kicked out of him by centre backs, it ended his career eventually, all the punishment his back got, but you never saw him rolling around making a meal of it, and his reaction to scoring that first penalty at Wembley showed he wouldn't be intimidated easily. Little fella too (you always have to watch out for the little ones!) and a northern working class lad, I reckon he'd have been handy enough if the situation required it.
Never saw Hales play so can't really make a comparison, would be interesting to know if people think Hales would have scored that third Wembley goal though, probably the best bit of instinctive penalty box striking I've seen in a Charlton shirt.
Killer never fannied about. If the ball was in the box, he just hit the fricken thing.
No subtleties - be in the right place at the right time, and play to your strengths.
Do it enough times, and the percentages do the rest.
Mendonca had a brain on him - that bit of vision, superb turn and first touch....... plus mental strength and composure.
If he'd had more pace, he surely would have been a Prem regular most of his career.
[cite]Posted By: PL54[/cite]We did have some great players over the years and so many of them as Strikers - look at the pile of poo we have now.
We've had our fair share of 'poo' throughout the years!!!!
Think you're being harsh calling the players we have now a 'pile of poo'...........this team is the first time I've seen down the Valley for a couple of seasons who actually look like they are playing for the shirt and the club and not themselves. They may have slightly less ability but I for one can't fault their effort, no matter how many times I have to hear the idiots around me telling me that Sam's lazy and Basey's too fat.
Great video, love seeing the guys from the mid 90's. I know we've had better players than them over the years but they were my favourite. Loved it when we had Rufus, Newton, Robinson, Brown etc in the team.
I remember being in a pub in London Bridge when Steve Jones signed for us and he came in the pub wearing his Charlton tracksuit and stood in there on the fruity having a pint!
I'm sure it wasn't as great as i remember but i truely loved going to the Valley back then

exactly, there was hope back then for a brighter future and better football and a chance to mix it with the big boys ......
now we dream of getting promoted and maybe holding our own against f***ing doncaster for a season or two .... brilliant

Basey does have a large arse tho dont you think? I often notice it when he bends over....
one day, maybe one day i might post a football related post.

nope, he has an arse...........something most men don't seem to these days.........it's just jealousy ;-)
The best bit about this video is the description: "This video is a reminder to all Charlton fans what can be achieved in football and what Charlton can achieve again. Lets get behind Parky and the team and let the good times roll again."
Sorry, not a video but I have a programme in my drawer at work which is Charlton -v- Millwall 11.09.93. On page 3 is a picture of Curbishley and Gritt being handed the keys for red and white Ford Mondeos GLX version. It makes me smile when I look at this picture and to know that the club were financially better off back then even though the manager was on penuts. What a new beginning it was to return to our home ground. Let's just hope somebody very wealthy will buy the club and offer us a new start again.

Well, we can dream ...... just like Pompey and Palace, etc
I'll probably get shot down for this:
If only we would all pull together and urge our team on during matches, and demonstrate the level of support that we showed in front of the team all through the 90s ...... we could well play a significant part in getting the club promoted.
Then we can claim £4 million of TV money in the Championship.

No wonder you call yourself "heavenSE7" .....!
I bet you thought that day you'd died and gone to heaven.

I love Killer though. He was a hero at a time when it was pretty pony being a Charlton fan.
Who'd win the fight? My money would be on Killer, but I reckon superclive would put up a better fight than Flanagan.

It was a brighter atmosphere; generally club and supporters pulled together - remember Fortress Valley?

Nobody else does, so I shouldn't worry, Curb_It.

Ah, our sit-upon ?
got a feeling a wrap to the knuckles is coming for going off topic just a tad.
Well, Curb_It ...... actually, no.
But I'll spare you the graphic detail.

That video has put a real bounce in my step this morning and I love shite away kits, the gaudier the better!
