At least Benicio Del Toro got a nomination for Supporting actor. But not sure why Sicario is getting snubbed at the award shows, thought it was brilliant.

Is it just me or does the best film award at the Baftas look very weak?
  • The Big Short and The Revenant deserve to be there. I heard Carol was very good, Kermode loved it. Bridge of Spies shouldn't be there IMO. It's a good genre movie, but boy did it drag on.

Agree with the above re. Sicario. Can only assume it's not getting a decent budget to campaign with. That Ridley Scott got nominated ahead of Denis Villeneuve is scandalous to me. Matt Damon nominated for The Martian is ridiculous too. He played himself more than in any other movie, which is saying something.

Spotlight is emperor's new clothes territory.

Braun Cranston made it in through popularity more than Trumbo's merits.
  • Jimbo what did you make of the Revenant. Thought the scenery and some scenes were superb but thought it dragged a bit at times. Di Caprio and Hardy good as always.
  • Just watched The Revenant with my parents. I quite liked it but my parents thought the film was nothing special apart from the obvious hard work Leonardo DiCaprio did. Anyway, I give it a 8.5/10 and hope DiCaprio wins an Oscar - if he doesn't win it for this performance, I don't think he will any time soon.

I watched The Martian last month and had to fast forward a lot of times to get to the end. I thought it was extremely boring and I was glad I didn't see it in the cinema. Maybe I'm just not into this kind of films anymore. It was the same with Interstellar for me last year. I like Nolan's earlier works such as his debut Following (absolutely genius) and Memento but I've been wondering why he's always doing sci-fi films these days. (So it's good to see his next project is about the Dunkirk evacuation.)

I've been very much looking forward to The Big Short as I studied finance in university and wrote my graduation thesis on the subprime mortgage crisis. Last time I saw a film on a similar subject it was Margin Call which I thought was superb. The Big Short looks like a very different film with fast pace and funny dialogues which I like as well.

I'm liking this year's film awards season. There're a lot more films that I'm interested to see than last year.
  • Saw hateful eight last night.
    Tarantino's eighth movie.
3.5 hours long with built in interval
Decent, standard Tarantino quality dialogues with storyline that kept going til the end.

    As violent as Django

    8/10
  • Wow... Plenty of haters here though:

    http://m.imdb.com/title/tt3460252/reviews?ref_=m_tt_urv#showAll

Lots of 1/10 and some 10/10
  • Jimbo what did you make of the Revenant. Thought the scenery and some scenes were superb but thought it dragged a bit at times. Di Caprio and Hardy good as always.

I was really in the mood for it so honestly, I loved it. As you say the scenery/ cinematography were outstanding, and the performances were compelling too. Some of the criticism I've read accuses Innaritu of being a bit 'shallow' but I saw it as an action movie, not Birdman 2. It's a tough watch at times, it's agonising watching him struggle for so long.

Having seen Hateful 8 since, it doesn't drag on nearly as badly as a Tarantino movie. I liked H8 until the last 30-45 minutes. At which point it feels like they left the cameras running and made it up as they went along.

The best film I've seen this year - and I expect to still be saying this in December - is The Big Short. It's fantastic. An utterly riveting account of the housing crisis of 08. It follows a trio of separate groups, as they foresee the bubble bursting, and bet against the banks who are way too arrogant to understand that they might've messed up (it's based on a book of the same name).

The explanations for how and why the market collapsed are really well detailed in layman's terms. To the extent that actors, as themselves, talk to camera to get the key points across.

The editing/ visual flair give it loads of energy, and the cast are so watchable I didn't want it to end.

More than anything, it aims to make you angry that only one person, out of an incredibly corrupt system, went to prison.

The book is excellent so looking forward to this.

  • The Hateful Eight

I'm not one of these people who can watch a film over and over again in a short space of time. Once I've seen a film that's it . That is unless it's a Quentin Tarantino film. I can watch them over and over and after seeing this I'm going to watch it again next week.
The best way to describe this is that it's Reservoir Dogs meets Django. It starts relatively slowly with Kurt Russell , Jennifer Jason Leigh and Sam Jackson laying down the foundations of the story while taking a horse and carriage ride in the snow but when they get to the infamous , Minnie's Haberdashery , the fun really begins.
There are some great performances , especially from Jennifer Jason Leigh and Sam Jackson and there is plenty of Tarantino dialogue to last the three hours , not to mention the blood and gore.
It's not the best film of his , for me that still goes to Pulp Fiction but this is up there with Inglorious Bastards , Django Unchained and Reservoir Dogs.
    Enjoy

  • Watched The Big Short last night and totally enjoyed it. It was nothing like Margin Call, very funny and entertaining although the subject matter it dealt with was actually quite depressing. Great editing, and great performances from the cast, especially Steve Carell. I used to think he was just a great comedian but now I'm convinced he's also very good at playing a serious role.

9/10 and my choice for Best Picture this year - unless Spotlight turns out to be a better one.
  • Spotlight is a TV movie. Very interesting subject matter and very well performed. But I honestly couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

I have to lower my expectations then.
  • Big Short it is then for my next film

    North v South

I normally avoid these straight to DVD British gangster movies because they are generally crap. This one took my eye because it had a half decent cast with actors such as Bernard Hill , Steven Berkoff and Keith Allen and while this isn't as bad as most of the usual rubbish , even these actors , despite giving solid performances , can't make this a film that I can really recommend.
The story is about two rival gangs from either ends of the country who are trying to and a feud but behind the scenes there is a romance that will never be tolerated , especially when one gang member is hell bent on destruction.
I enjoyed the first half hour , especially the performance of Brad Moore but the film soon falls apart when the story seems to go pear shaped and in the end I didn't really care what happened to anyone.

Yeah that'll help. By no means a bad film. I read some reviews, and particularly the newspaper hacks, they love it for its authentic newsroom depiction. But to me that didn't make it a great film. Just an interesting one.

I absolutely hated this film . So much so it made me angry . I was angry because I cannot for the life of me understand the praise this film has received and why it has received academy award nominations.
Why does a film about a woman who is trying to sell a squeezy mop ever gets made in the first place ? The story really is as dull as it sounds . Duller in fact.
I'm not a fan of David O. Russell anyway . Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle were overrated in my opinion but neither were anywhere near as bad as this . If I never see Bradley Cooper and his lopsided face fawning over " look at me I'm the new Meryl Streep" Jennifer Lawrence again in a movie, it will be too soon and what was De Niro playing at ?? Another terrible performance in a long line of terrible performances from the once great man.
This movie felt like a Sunday afternoon , made for TV flick , that my wife would watch and that I run a mile from. Sickly sweet with sentiment , so much so that you literally feel nauseated watching it.
It's amazing that I managed to get to the end of this drivel. It's a bloody mop for Christ sake - Who cares ???
One of the worst films I have seen in a very long time.

  • I can't bring myself to watch it Beds. There's a lot emperors new clothes about David O. Russell movies, I'm almost glad this one is getting a kicking. It looks really boring to me.
  • Tbf Silver Linings was brilliant. But this looks to be a bit of a rehash of it. A friend watched it though whose film opinions I respect and although Joy isn't his usual type of film he enjoyed it so I probably will give it a go.

Totally agree about your emperors new clothes comment.. It's trendy to like him but I just don't see it.
Do yourself a favour Jimmy, Steer well clear of this one.

What do you think of the best film nominations announced yesterday ? Not a vintage year is it.

  • Yeah it was a predictable set. Disappointed Sicario didn't feature more heavily. I also call bull**** on The Martian. It's a fun film, but I have a real issue with the last act. I don't think it should anywhere near Best Picture. I'm not convinced about Spotlight, so I'd be happy to see Revenant and The Big Short do well. And Stallone. Badly want him to take Supporting Actor.

I'm going to see Creed tomorrow and hopefully Revenant next week . I suspect Mark Rylance will win best supporting actor although I could be wrong . The Martian was just ok but never best picture material . Beast of no Nation didn't get a nomination which is puzzling to me , maybe they are not ready to give a Netflix film the recognition yet. As for Sicario , as you know , I'm with you on that one.
  • Not new but watched 45 Years. The final 2 minutes are incredibly sad. Classic character filmmaking.
  • Revenant is full on, very good film. Both Hardy and DiCaprio are excellent.

    9/10
  • Don't think I've seen 'No Escape' mentioned.
    Decent film, very intense.
Was worried Owen Wilson wouldn't work in a serious role, surprised me.

I just watched the film and I agree with almost everything you said about it. I don't know if it was the directing but I found some parts predictable. I just checked the director and I'm surprised he's got quite a few Best Director nominations for this film. I think overall it's a good film but not a particularly great one.

Personally I would like to see The Big Short win Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards and Leonardo DiCaprio win Best Actor. I'm yet to watch Brooklyn, Room, Carol and Steve Jobs but I don't think I'll change my opinion.

Lol... I never understood how Silver Linings Playbook got so much praise. One of the most over-rated films ever. I remember I watched twenty minutes and simply couldn't stand it. I've never watched any of David O. Russell's films since then. When I saw the trailer for American Hustle I just knew I wouldn't be interested in it at all. And I'm definitely not going to watch Joy. I'm glad I'm not the only one!
  • Won't be going to see Joy but I enjoyed American Hustle.
  • Went to see Creed, not bad, thought it would be a bit too popcorny for me, but it was a bit gut wrenching in places.

  • Watched Concussion last night with Will Smith based on a true story I believe. Very enjoyable, but I've always been a Will Smith fan.
