    The Grand Budapest Hotel

I'm not a fan of director Wes Anderson. Someone needs to tell him that movies are not all about style , they need to include some modicum of substance . The Gran Budapest Hotel is nauseatingly stylish. Nearly every scene is symmetrical and looks like an over coloured Polaroid.
The story that is being told gets whitewashed in Wes Anderson's over production and like most of his work after 20 minutes i just wanted to get off this ride.
Of course , professional critics loved this. Anderson is one of those directors that can do no wrong in their eyes but for me it's a case of the Emperors new clothes.
    Vastly overrated.

I thought it was a great film. Enjoyed every minute of it. Sorry but how you can give Whiplash 7/10 and Grand Budapest Hotel 4/10 is strange to me. But we all like different things in our films I guess.
  • Not a latest but saw The Lone Ranger recently. Two words for those that have not seen it - Don't bother.

    Echoed my thoughts, Beds.

I actually fell asleep watching it but Mr F gave it the thumbs up.

  • Okay. I want to ge this off my chest. I saw 50 Shades of Grey last week. It was a deal I worked with Mrs Shabby (I won't even go into my demands, suffice to say she came out of the negotiations with a better deal).
Basically, I'll go with all the bad reviews. It's crap. It's vastly plotless, pointless and utterly tedious. I've heard it described as Mummy-porn, to which I'd have to say there are some mummies out there who badly need to aquire a hobby. I'm told the books are worse, and given the emptiness of the film, I can't think how a book could be worse, unless the autor can't do gramar, spelling and joined up writing.
It's enjoying huge success in the box office, but even Mrs Shabby agreed we can give fils two and three a miss.

And this was our first time at the cinema for three years without the children! What a waste. Like seeing Charlton 1-0 down at home, and in the 90th minute, they break through the opposition defence, and Simon Church is one on one with the keeper........

Actually I'm really surprised it's dominating the box office in the US. I briefly read one review on the book a few months ago and decided not to waste time on it. I don't think books and films like this (and the Twilight series) would have got anywhere in a time before the internet.
  • Saw 'Merican Sniper on Friday...

Really enjoyed it 7/10 let down only by it being so damn in favour of Murica

    Pun intended?

Went to see Selma on Tuesday. Very well put together and emotional. Can't believe it has no Oscar nominations.

I think I saw a few Chelsea fans in the Edmund Pettus Bridge scenes!

Saw it last night. Very good film and would have been better if they'd cut the personal angle out (i.e. the relationship with his wife which added nothing). Some great performances.

  • Not a latest film but just a heads up to one of my favourites that's on BBC1 tonight. The Heist, staring Gene Hackman & Danny DeVito. As in the words of Lord Blackadder...."there's more twists & turns than a twisty turny thing" 9/10

The song Glory really captured the message perfectly. It is hard to comprehend that those things happened in the 'Land of the free' so recently. Says it all to me when American Sniper is a bigger box office hit than Selma. Glad that Selma finally got at least some recognition in the award ceremonies. Mind you I have always been a sucker for the underdog. Why I support Charlton I suppose:-)

  • Wish i was here

It's a rare thing an intelligent American comedy so when one does come along i like to shout about it. Wish i was here starts off as a normal comedy about a disfunctional family but as it continues you begin to realise it's much more than that.
This is film about faith ( or the lack of it ) , bereavement and the unity of family.
There are some lovely performances from the two child actors Joey King and Pierce Gagnon and Zach Braff is really good as their father.
    A pleasant surprise.

  • Kingsman: A Secret Service

A couple of hours of pure escape. Brilliant cast (C. Firth, S. L-Jackson, M. Caine) plus a few unknowns who make a name for themselves. James Bond with exceptional violence and a comic twist. Says cert 15, should be an 18.
Got a hint of the Tarantino about it.
2nd favourite for me after Django.

  • Heavens Gate
    Watched the restored version y'day.
I know, not a latest film but the restored edition is pretty new.
An amazing film, well worth a watch.
  • I went to Bluewater to see the wedding ringer. Very funny. Well worth seeing imo.
  • Birdman - I can see why this won the best film at the oscars. Not sure if I would agree but a good film. Interesting way the film is shot to make it look like it was done in one take and Zak Galifiniakis was not annoying for a change.
  • So @supaclive The Voices one of yours? Good fun in a strange sort of way!

  • Birdman

Having read about Birdman and seen clips of the film i was sure i wasn't going to like it. I was wrong.
I actually liked it a lot.
I don't admit to understanding everything i was seeing but that didn't really matter.
Like the camera work throughout , this film just flowed. Michael Keaton is superb as the troubled actor and because we haven't seen him in anything substantial for years it really does feel like art imitating real life.
Although i enjoyed it , it wouldn't have been my choice for best film at the Oscars but because it's about acting and the Academy who votes is full of actors it's no surprise that it won.

It was, but I got paid off to give the rights to somebody else!! It is quirky and different, but enjoyable. However I never turn down serious free money!!!

Yeah - I loved this as well. I think it helps if you like Zach Braff (not like that, before the sarky fcukers start) but the film itself is really good. Every now and then a film comes along and surprises you - this was that film for me last year

    Predestination

The movie industry , for a long time , has been obsessed with time travel. This is slightly surprising considering it's very easy to get it wrong and Predestination is a very good example of that.
The first hour of this film is fine , it sets up the whole story well and is in fact quite compelling but the second half feels very rushed and in the end is a complete mess. By the time the last scene finished i sat there opened mouthed , not understanding very much of what i had just seen.
Ethan Hawke is pretty good but i wasn't convinced about Sarah Snook's performance especially as the male character.

Dangerous Mind of a Hooligan or ( This is a robbery )

I'm not going to fall for this great British gangster movie crap anymore. I'm sick to death of these straight to DVD\Sky films that all look the same and have pretty much the same plot.
This movie is not the worst i have seen but it's certainly not a film i could recommend to anyone. The acting from the main group isn't that bad but everyone else involved stink the place up , especially the Scottish guy who plays the bent cop.
This is also described as a football hooligan film but this hardly gets mentioned .
This is bad but not as bad as the Dave Courtney gangster movies that are cropping up at the moment .
The best thing i can say about Dangerous mind of a Hooligan is that it's mercifully short at 72 minutes.
You can watch the whole movie below and see what i mean.

  • Jupiter Ascending... what a load of crap. Pretty, flashy, spectacular, but crap. Seriously. The likes of Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum are never going to rate amongst the all time acting greats but at the end they were apparently in love with absolutely no lead up that I could tell. Eddie Redmayne had the right idea, clearly not taking the whole thing seriously at all what with HIS SUDDEN SHOUTING at apparently RANDOM intervals. The worst film of the year so far.
  • Just to interject on a couple of these reviews, because it would be a real shame for people to miss out on some gems.

Predestination is a low-fi movie, a small budget and only a handful of players. It's not perfect, but the notion that the second half is 'a bit rushed' is nonsense. It's a 'whatever happened, happened' take on time travel (which is a sub-genre visited no more than a couple of times per year), not an overplayed cliche. The ending is quite clear, so it'd be a shame for people to choose to miss out on it because one guy couldn't understand it.

Whiplash is almost perfect. I've yet to meet anyone who didn't find it utterly gripping. Two stunning central performances based around a fairly simple premise. It looks gorgeous and sounds even better. I'd have loved to have seen it take the Oscar. I doubt very much I'll see a better movie this year.

Grand Budapest Hotel - I don't like Wes Anderson's work very much at all, he's style over substance. But not in this case. It's by far his best work. A visual stunner married to a story that has the kind of depth Anderson avoids. And Ralph Fiennes is wonderful in it.

    A bit like Beds' reviews.

    Sorry Beds couldn't resist.

  • My reviews are just that " my reviews ".

Jimmy loves telling everyone i'm wrong but he forgets it's MY opinion not his.
    I don't tell him he's wrong.

    What I think, isn't definitive.

Never mind we've had this argument before and it's boring.

Is that a fact, or just your opinion?

FWIW, I like your reviews and find myself largely in agreement with your opinions.
  • Second exotic marigold hotel - great fun, thoroughly enjoyed it

  • Stone, I imagine this to be very similar to the first one - is that the case?
