What did happen to Mark Mansfield? Does anyone know what he is up to now.Shows what a shit decision it was to sell out to Capital Gold when they gave football up after a couple of years. Those commentaries were great on RTM.
Mark was last seen working for the company behind Clubcall, as he made them shed loads of cash with the old Charlton Clubcall line.
I was not surprised when Charlton sold the rights to Crapital, Millennium had never paid anything for them and, to be honest, could never afford to match the Crapital offer. Harsh, but that's business.
I remember Marks' last show and how "strongly" he felt about the decision. I spoke to him for the last time some weeks after the decision was taken and he was still angry shall we say. I think he expected me to walk away from Charlton as well. It was gutting at the time but I think I made the right decision.
Unfortunately losing the commentaries killed off Millennium. Without the Charlton audience we couldn't compete and we ended up being sold to a bunch of dozy pillocks from Oxfordshire who thought they knew how to run radio.
So is that the last anyone heard from Mark,if so rather sad.I can't believe someone so passionate about Charlton would just sever all ties. You would have thought the club could have offered him a position instead of all the other twats they gave jobs too.
Funny isn't it the voice of the valley fanzine spent years trying to be independent and contraversial yet when they were offered jobs, they couldn't run there fast enough.

works for leyton orient now, in a similar sort of capacity.
Last time i saw Mansfield he was having what looked like a heated conversation with a known Charlton person opposite the club shop, about the time of the break up.
Always question the depth of people's loyalties when they just walk away like that though.
What i will say though, is that show carried by Mark, originally with Clive R and Steve Sutherland was actually one of the reasons i got so into Charlton. And his play off final commentary of the penalties with Paddy was some of the most fantastic, heartfelt radio i've ever heard.

Yeah, Rick Everitt. That was around the time we played Man Utd away in our first season back. Rick was on my coach and had a lot of heated phone calls on the way to Old Trafford. Although I liked Charlton chat/Live I thought Mark let himself down with his childish attitude when it all ended. But then it didn't end did it? Others tried to keep it going but he should have stayed.
see Mark most mornings when walking up London Wall. Think he still works for the people behind 'clubcall' or whatever as their offices are just North of Finsbury Sq I believe. Also see Jonathan Acworth around the same area on a regular basis although I can't imagine who'd employ him !
just worked out who BDL is !! Charlton Live eh, those were the days. Who can forget Brian from Thamesmead, Vic from Charlton and the excellant Neal from Barnehurst. Takes you back doesn't it.

I thought that Neal from Barnehurst was a right wally. Almost as bad as Dave from Gravesend...;)

Whato BD, remember me?
Last I heard Mark had left Clubcall went to Brentford and has now taken a job at MKDons, but that was only a rumour, so I don't know for sure.
Sunday's were never the same after it went t**ts up, but I enjoyed it while it lasted.
I'm doing my best to resurrect the old times though. Going to try to get hold of Mark to interview him for our Sunday show if I can track him down, I've already had a word with Kevin Nolan and he said he was up for it. Might even do that for this Sunday. Fancy an interview on life as a Match Day Announcer anytime?
Mark Mansfield was the pinnacle of my least favourite way to follow Charlton - the radio. When I listen now, I imagine every move forward by the opposition to be just on the point of being a goal. When he did it, he seemed to perfect that slight warble of dread as the opposition took even a goal kick! A Charlton fan and I respect his work, but he would take months off of my life during his match commentaries - great when we scored though. I imagine I'd be the same, Pvt Frazer: "We're all doomed!" and "I told you we'd be alright" after a win! Just my memory of it.
Hey BDL I shall never forget your face about 30 seconds before a certain Charlton Live when the whole basis for the show had disappeared owing to a "lack of information", shall we say :) First time I've ever seen you ALMOST speechless! I really enjoyed and still miss Mark Mansfield's commentaries and the Sunday night show, it's part of the Charlton experience that has never been properly replaced IMO. Some of you guys on here ought to look at whether you could do some sort of live chat/ radio style thing based on this board. I wouldn't know how you do it but I'm sure someone out there would. Come on AFKA, you haven't done much lately :) Reckon you Henry and quite a few others on here could front it quite easily. :-)
A top show that has never been replaced.at least it was something to listen to,what do we have now! a diluted website which dripfeeds info as and when it feels like it, a programme that doesn't tell what you don't already know! AND CHARLTON LIFE.

When I get the chance I may write up some of the tales of Charlton coverage on 106.8fm.
That would be excellent BDL and a great insight!!!

Same here- passionate fans based radio, talking the way we talked rather than the professionally produced, but bland stuff on "normal" radio
The sound of them choking and "you carry on
I can't" is exactly that AFKA.
If there is a chance some form of Charlton Life live radio- that would be a really good extention of this Forum- IMHO!

On so many occasions John!!!!!
I'm surprised that Terry isn't plugging his show on TGR sound:
It was a real struggle to keep the show going after Mark left - I couldn't commit to Sunday evenings, so John Lucas took over, aided by Mick Collins and others. John left Millennium to be eventually replaced by Bob Lawrence and Terry Smith (killersbeard).
I could tell you a lot of tales, but know is not the time!
that sounds great..... Id love to here the tape of the wembley final.... as for a charlton commentary or a charltonlife commentary that would be great.........
BDL, I've had a word with Addickted, who has a cassette he's going to loan us, which I'll make available in edited form here for download. But if you can get the edited version in digital form and uploaded, we'll host it.

I know that he moved down to Kent, just outside Maidstone. Sue, his iother half, can still be heard on LBC I believe.

Better than Orson Welles and his famous War of the Worlds radio commentary.

I saw him in the North Stand bar when we played the Villa.

Love to come into BCR and do a bit with you! May have a number for Mark somewhere if not Lucas may have his number - I'll try and get it for you.

If Charlton Life has got space on it server, maybe they can be added to the site?
Let me know.
