Bit of a comedown after thumping Man City 5-0 4 days earlier !

Any memories of either the Arsenal win or this Spurs game ?
  • 20 years ago? i think i am going to throw up!
  • Jeez, I remember that Spurs game like it was yesterday.
They filled the whole of the Holmesdale Road end and it was a really wet day as well.
From what I remember we were a bit unlucky and deserved a point but that fat b'stard Galvin came on as sub, picked the ball up on the halfway line and ran at our defence before planting a 30-yard screamer into the top corner right in front of the Spurs fans.
Mind you, that was the year that Spurs had a right tasty side under Kerbie and finished 2nd or 3rd with Clive Allen scoring his 49 goals.
  • scarily remember the spurs game , more spurs at sellout park than charlton... i was in the half awake stand and it was supposedly the home end but plenty of yiddos in there... i remember getting a train from mottingham to lee then the no.75 bus around the world to sellout and that was a f***ing long journey home after we'd lost. Tony bloody galvin always scored screamers against us..... still after the previous 10 years of tripe i'd witnessed as an addick fan it was a big thrill to see the 'big teams' playing against charlton as a bright eyed 16 year old, even tho it was at sellout
  • its easy to forget that whenever we had 'on paper' a decent crowd at Selhurst, 70% of it was away fans....
  • just out of interest, how many here remember being at the Spurs game 20 years ago ?
  • I have a vague memory of the spurs game , I remember the Galvin goal
  • Yes I was there and you're right, 70% of our gate for those games were oppo fans. Very much how Wimbledon survived for years in the top flight though.
  • One good, one bad......
  • Only 5 players from the Charlton v Arsenal game still playing in the Premiership

    Who was Danilevicius?!

I was suffering with flu. Made it to London Bridge, threw up all over the platform and decided to get the next train home!
  • This old git was there!
  • Yes, I was there with March Jnr. when he was a Junior Red. Remember those games were ridiculously cheap if you were a member with a Junior Red in tow.
  • top flight footy ..... those were the days my friend..................................
  • Selhurst Park days i had 5 years of it .The only good thing about Selhurst was The Clifton Arms pub ran my an ex Millwall and Orient player whos name was Dave Harper he had a son who was a Charlton fan.
  • I was there for the Spurs match but I have no recollection of the game!
I can't work out whether my memory is beginning to fail me or whether I drank way too much in those days :0
  • CONFESSION TIME FROM MORTS-GENIUS!

That was a tough one for me as i had switched from being a spurs fan to Charlton a year or two previous 1984/5.
I started watching Charlton from the first game at selhurst, as i travelled with my mates in cars! (From shooters hill).
I remember firmly being a Charlton fan that day but my most favourite player of my spurs days was infact Tony Galvin.
22 years on and still quite happy that CAFC are my favoutite team......so this is the lowest league and last season was the poorest football ever experienced.
I have done my bit for charlton before you all tell me to f off back......
10 year ticket, valley party candidate (Thamesmead Moorings), VIP for a spell and a current season ticket holder with 1 kids ticket between 2 (punishment for the naughtiest!).
  • f-off back to spurs
  • Did the Spurs game remember it well, missed the Arsenal one as was playing football then.
  • Couldnt ever do that, as i would easily find more to moan about, ie, track records against rivals, winning the easier games thats expected, etc
As for their away support eh? Oohaah

  • Remember the day of the Spurs game well.
Had spent new year in Blackheath & at around 7am was in the passenger seat of a car when Terry Waite came striding through the village heading towards the train station. I lowered the window of the car & wished him a happy new year & he did likewise.
That was Mr Waite on the way to Lebanon.
    Later we lost 2-0.
    Mr Waite lost 4 years.
  • there's only one JJ.......
  • [cite]Posted By: AFKABartram[/cite]just out of interest, how many here remember being at the Spurs game 20 years ago ?

Yep - me. I seem to recall us being a bit unlucky on the day, but both of their goals were out the top drawer.

It was just after we smashed Man City 5-0 at home and I remember seeing Pleat at that game obviously having a look at us for himself.

£1 for a seat in the Members Stand as a junior read - those were the days.
  • I seem to remember all the Arsenal players bottled it and didn't want to take their penalty so Vivas stepped up...

I was at the spurs game all I can remember was yids everywhere and not feeling to brave as a 15yr old.

We stood in the same bit that we always did and the amount of yiddos in the half awake was ridiculous.

I remember a little off by the greasy spoon cafe earlier that day aswell

Remember the Spurs game very well. Went with my ten year old son Adam.

Nico Clasen was excellent and we couldn't deal with his pace. Remember him giving Mark Reid (I think) a torrid time. Then Galvin came on and we couldn't deal with him, either.

I don't think we played badly, but Spurs were a class above us that day and really marauded down the wings. At the other end I don't think Jimmy Melrose got even a sniff of a chance.

Looking at the team , where was Robert Lee?

And who played centre back alongside Shirtliff in Steve Thompson's absence? Andy Peake or George Shipley, I suppose. I remember Shipley better than he probably deserves because apparently I vaguely looked like him (he was never the most handsome player). I remember getting nodded through into the post-match hospitality at Selhurst once, without an invite , by someone who said : ''How's the injury George? Do you reckon you'll be back soon?'' I replied : ''Hope so'' . They didn't seen to notice the lack of a Geordie accent and I just walked though !
  • Aizlewood would've played centre half - Shipley was only about 4ft 5!
  • I was at both....I remember us having all sorts of problems containing Galvin......also remember the Man City game too...found out that friends Husband was a Citeh fan and took him to the game.....it was quiet on the arduos drive back to West Kingsdown
  • Was in Sainsbury end for Spurs game - seemed like there was 15 thousand spurs that day.
Possibly biggest away following we saw a Selhurst - or maybe Millwall when they came.

Was in Jimmy Seed for Arsenal game - remember thinking he was gonna save it when saw that Vivas was gonna take the pen.
Thought that was the game where someone did really nasty tackle from behind on Bergkamp but see that he didnt play in this one.
