Addicks sign Sodje number two

edited November 2009 in General Charlton
Charlton have snapped up Akpo Sodje, brother of Addicks defender Sam, on loan from Sheffield Wednesday.

The deal for the 28-year-old striker was completed on Saturday morning, and the forward is eligible to play against Milton Keynes Dons.

The youngest of the 10-strong Sodje clan, he was born in Greenwich and started his career with Queens Park Rangers.

  • not averse to this.

Benn injury prone, but if he is fit he should add to what we have. We are trying to strengthen a weak area IMO
  • One Mrs Sodje, There's only one Mrs Sodje, One Mrs Sodjeeee
  • A decent signing imo, especially as its with a view to a perm deal. The sort of big and strong striker we've been lacking.
  • "Benn injury prone"

    We only sign the infirm.

    Lol!
  • As AFKA says I think he's had his fair share of injuries.

I've seen him score some cracking goals. He reminds me a bit of how you would hope McLeod should be, but never produces.

Anyway good move as today I was/am expecting us to play McKenzie and Burton neither of whom are fully fit.

Have we signed her as well ?
  • happy enough with this.

Dickson will be sold in January and from what I've been told 'to anyone but Gillingham'

Yep as a player maker. I believe my Valley Gold money has something to do with it
  • Seems a good loan, with view to permanent transfer.

The new 'Big' Chris Iwelumo ....? ;o)

We do need more players with Sam Sodje's spirit, enthusiasm, determination. If Sam's brother is from the same mould, that'll stand us in good stead. And the fact that's he's a strong physical player will help at this level.

And we especially need that physical aerial presence in the opponent's box.

    What's his first touch like ..... a bit like brother Sam's ...? ;o)

And if one little Sodje should accidently fall...
  • happy with this but am concerned that we are getting back to getting loanees in he they dont work then get another one. what is mooney doing here
  • I'm very happy about this. He's a brilliant player, best of the Sodjes, but has struggled with injuries (capable of the Premiership if it wasn't for all the knocks IMO).

Says that the club is probably still a pretty happy place to be, if his brother didn't tell him to stay away.

(I also made exactly this move in CM2010 and he was awesome).

    Yay, good news.

Different type of player, and this one could become permanent.

Happy with this, was clear we needed a physical presence up front and it's good to see Parky has tried to do something about it. Perhaps Parky is considering using McKenzie on the left? Doesn't look like Bailey will be playing there, at least not today, and Holden might get a few more chances now.
  • We all blame too many loanees for the past 2 dire seasons, and perhaps rightly so.

    But, to put into perspective:

    1) We have a decent first choice starting 11, but the quality/experience in the squad is variable to say the least
There were no funds available to increase the quality of the squad as a whole.

    2) The full transfer window is shut, and the loan window closes within the next week or 2.
Last chance to cover all eventualities for the end of year/Xmas run in.

    3) We appear to be lacking adequate cover in some areas - only 2 permanent keepers, 1 gets injured and so we need another for the bench - so Ikeme arrives.
Both rightbacks being injured in the same week, so Omo signed.
Obviously Mooney brought in for a then injured McKenzie and as cover in case Burton breaks down.
Now McLeod is suspended, and also lacking a physical presence up front, the other Sodje comes in.

    4) Overlooking Holden (the wild card) who was loaned to prove himself first, both Omo and Sodje the 2nd have been signed with view to permanent transfer in January (like Burton last year), so perhaps can be considered almost to be permanent signings. I don't know about Mooney, he looks neat & tidy to me, maybe not physical enough. If Randolph goes in January, Ikeme could stay for the rest of the season?

Rather than just replacing injured players, it also appears that Parky is trying to bring in a couple of players with different attributes to provide something extra that could be lacking in the team/squad otherwise.
Remember, he has no money and can't make full signings anyway.

It's been evident that some 1st team players have virtually no competition - and that can't be healthy.
But it would be good to get an insider's view of the impact of loan players behind the scenes.
  • Where did Holden go on loan?
  • Okay ...... on loan to us, from playing in the Champions League with Rhyl Madrid
  • Brian Laws is quoted on teamtosh as saying that he is coming to us to get games and get fit. Nothing about a permanent move!
  • Sodje the 2nd is out of contract at Sheff W in the summer - so no doubt he's looking at us and we're looking at him.
He might need a new job.

Laws will say whatever he thinks his own supporters want to hear.

    ...
Good post Oggy, agree with all of that. Lack of competition clearly hasn't helped Racon for one.

With these loan signings, there's a reason why we got them on loan. Unlike loan signings like Scott Sinclair or cheap signings like Stuart Fleetwood, Dean Sinclair etc these are players in positions we need competition and in the case of Akpo Sodje, a different type of player.

    So will Parky lol
  • In the end the move probably suits both clubs and the player. If he does well, Sheff Wed get a few injuries, they might call him back and play him.

If he does well here and enjoys it, he might want to sign permanently. Like with Burton last year, he'd probably get a 1 1/2 year deal here. If he goes back to Sheff Wed, they'd probably use him when needed and decide if they want to offer him a deal at the end of the season.
  • Don't forget Akpo is a local lad and probably feels that signing for Charlton is like coming home.

His brother Sam is here also, and must have given good feedback about the club - Akpo wouldn't be so keen on coming if Sam had painted a bad picture of Charlton.

No doubt, it was Sam Sodje who first tipped off Parky that his bro was available.

2 lads I certainly wouldn't want to see the bad side of. :~)

Hope to see a bit more of Akpo in the coming weeks, if he's as good as Sam is in defence, uptop, then I'm looking forward to seeing him!
  • Spoke to some Wednesday fans when I was on hols this years. Remember them saying when he is fully fit, Akpo is a handful for any championship defence (or something similar) so hopefully like McKenzie if he can get to 100% then we have a real coup.
They also said Burton would star in league 1 and so far so good on that front!
  • Saying no to loans because we've made a number of bad ones (but a few great ones - Carson and Ward spring to mind) is like saying we shouldn't have a manger because we've made a number of shit appointments. The smart idea would be to not make shit loan signings. Trust me after you've seen a bit more of Akpo people will be desperate for him to sign up.
  • Its a brilliant signing imo. He was class for Sheff Weds, when fit but like Mckenzie probably seems injury jinxed. Gonna be good to see how he plays, if its anywhere near the standard hes brother plays at, sign him up Parky
  • I am aware that I am commenting on him after a short cameo role yesterday, yes but I was not overtly impressed as he seem to shirk from every challenge - must be mentally scarred from all the injuries he has acquired to date?

the game was won and he's rusty. No point risking anything - just use it for game time.

One thing I will say is that he has pace a he could be very exciting indeed!

Also heard st half time that "akpo will be coming on with 16 minutes left" which surpised me a lot to hear subs planned in advance of the game!
