The Point Of 4-5-1

  • Far too early to tell, even Parky won't know how we'll look to set up the team yet. Not even any news yet on players signing new contracts to stay. To play 4-5-1 we need the right striker, otherwise it won't do much good, whatever the midfield is.

Resigning Burton would allow us to go 4-5-1 (I can't see he is effective in a 4-4-2, see above) but the point of my post is that Parky should decide on the system, then go out and get the players to fit, rather than last year's cobbling together a system to suit the players you have but not playing the system to it's strengths.
  • the key to making a 4-5-1 work both defensively and offensively IMO is having wingers that, when attacking they can join the striker transforming it to a 4-3-3 and when defending can drop back and add bodies to the midfield. without wingers that can do this, it ends up becoming a 9-1, which might have been alright back when we had darren bent upfront, who as long as the ball fell kindly would be able to make something of it.

in this league with the players we've got i think we should just stick to 4-4-2

There seems little point in re-signing Burton & Mooney then as they are ineffective with wingers. Mooney would suit running the channels with a quick forward doing the same on the otherside but is too lightweight to challenge for flick-ons.
  • Far to early to say as we don't even know what players we will have yet. Ideally Parkinson should decide on the formation he wants to play next season and then go and get the players he think will best fit into that system. System first, players second.
  • we need players that can adapt to different formations. away to sheff wed or southampton we might need that extra man in midfield. at home to exeter or orient we should be playing with two strikers.
what we really need, to state the obvious, is a striker who is as comfortable playing up front on his own as playing with another beside him. a striker who can feed off all types of service; crosses, long balls and through-balls.

Exactly. Parky can't just say we'll always play 4-4-2. So much changes throughout the season. A certain player leaving or signing can change a lot, like Reid coming in meaning we had a left footed left winger, or Shelvey going meaning 4-4-1-1 was less of an option.

I would also add we desperately need a striker with some real pace who can benefit from any flick ons from Burton/Akpo, something we seriously lacked last season. I keep going on about him on this site, but Obika on loan would be perfect.
