Holden

edited November 2009 in General Charlton
Thought he looked decent tonight, big game for him & he was bound to be nervous but he played positively and look stronger than Wagstaff. I wonder if he has done enough to earn himself a contract?

  • Although he didn't always get things quite right, he looked like he's the kind of player more likely to play a killer pass or get a good cross in than Wagstaff. Would like to see more of him though to really see how good he is.

Shame he didn't play on the left side for the whole time he was on, would definitely help him. Surely no worse than Wagstaff, and with him being left footed he could be useful, even if it's just coming on as a sub. I guess Parky has only wanted one winger on the bench so has gone for Wagstaff so far. Perhaps we need to have him and Wagstaff on the bench and only have one defender? Basey can cover several positions, as can Youga and Semedo.
  • Holden, being previously a non-league part timer, quite likely didn't have the degree of fitness when he joined Charlton - and it's taken a while to get him physically able to cope with games.

Ability and quality on the ball? He's an ex-Liverpool youth team player, so he must have something - so his ability is probably fine for this level, providing the rest of his game is brought up to scratch.
  • He seemed pretty good right enough. There's not a whole lot can be said. He was played out of position. Good cross for the goal.

Really good point about his fitness, didn't really think of that. If he can come on and make a decent impact in a few more games he'll have a good chance of signing permanently. Just the position we need a player in as well.

Wrong. Sam's not a great crosser, but he does create chances for us. Nine assists last season (and that's only chances that were finished) in a struggling team in which he wasn't a regular is decent, as is his record this season (3 assists a third of the way through the season).

Also have to remember he doesn't have many targets, nevermind good ones, to aim for. I'm not a huge fan of Sam but he's good enough for the level we're at, has done it inconsistently a level above and offers things other players don't.
  • Promising debut, far better option than wagstaff. Give him a run in the team and get his confidence, fitness upto scratch and he might be a useful asset this season especially against the weaker sides. Also he is a totally unknown quanitity at this level so can exploit a few defences, nobody has a clue about him. Im sure he will be dropped for Saturday and we will never see him again lol
  • He looked good in the warm up against Barnet and impressed tonoght, we have struggled recently in midfield so i think he at least deserves a place on the bench on sat. His fitness is getting near to where it needs to be and maybe he could really make an impression and earn a deal

You surely don't think that has any bearing on a player's ability do you? FFS - even I look good in a warm-up - knocking the ball around in a circle, or doing a bit of keepy-uppy!
  • Haha of course not, I just mean it looked as though he had a sweet left foot, could strike a ball nicely and would add some balance to the midfield

I think nine assists a season is abyssmal to be honest!
Are you serious that you would be happy for him to have just NINE assists a season?
I'd have thought the best part of twenty assists and at least 5-10 goals should be the minimum for the paciest wing attacking midfield forward crosser we have at the club!
If you add in the fact we are not struggling for survival this year and is an ever present to date that is a shocking return.

  • His age told at times with taking the extra man on instead of passing maybe, but did ok.
  • I thought he looked ok, decent cross for the goal but didn't really impose himself on the game much, interested to see him in a league game now
  • Interested to see him on a favoured left side also.
  • I think he should be given a go on the basis he can actually cross the ball i know it was only ONE cross but we scored and as cookie says it would be interesting to see how he copes in a league game.
  • [cite]Posted By: Scoham[/cite]he's the kind of player more likely to play a killer pass or get a good cross in than Sam Wagstaff the rest of the sorry turgid bunch of useless twats.
  • I thought he looked hungry and keen, if things didn't go his way he picked himself up and had another go and never stopped trying. It is the kind of hunger we had at the start of the season but is in short supply now. Decent effort, quality cross (two things we as a team aren't able to do at the moment) well played Luke.
  • He looked like he wanted to take defenders on which is refreshing, he did run up a few blind alleys, but as a left footer on the wrong side it was always going to be difficult. At this level, we need to be looking for exciting attacking players that will go at defences and he might offer us a bit of pace and increase the tempo of our attacking, which is shocking at the moment, we seem to want to stroke the ball around in the middle until the oppo have regrouped every time meaning we are facing 10 defenders, this is how oldham found us out and others since have done the same. At least the 2nd half was better last night.
  • I was unsure how to weigh up his performance, obviously not the finished article, and at times made bad decisions where his inexperienced showed. However seemed keen, got forward, put in a good cross. He was definately hungry for the ball so would like to see him get a full league second half under his belt (if we are in a position to put him on)
  • I'm not as positive as others, though i don't think a young lad making his debut when behind is the right environment to judge.

He looked very keen to me, nice basic touch, but lacking in know how and appeared to have little to worry a full back. Then pulled out a cracking whipped ball for the goal, that helped over ride some of my earlier dismissal.

Did look at times though a bit of a boy in a man's game.
  • Didn't think his performance was all that but good cross for the goal and was on the wrong side.

Obviously favours his left over his right as constantly come back on to stronger foot but it was his debut against a decent side and we were losing so won't rush to a judgement just yet.

  • Given that the rest of our team were generally sub standard I think it's fair to say that he gave his all and got something out of his performance. We have to remember where we are and the standard of player we can now attract. He was more effective than Sam and Wagstaff who were powder puff with zero product.
  • If you're worried about nine assists then I'd look back on most seasons in recent years and doubt if anyone bar Di Canio has surpassed that. He was in and out of the side, subbed regularly and created a lot of those chances without Gray in the team. The guy can cross but all too often wants the perfect snappy chance to cross, he is excellent at attacking the channel when we counter attack but unfortunately like all our other midfielders needs othes to provide the platform or intial impetus.

I've prob jumped to conclusions about Holden but if he can provide pace and direct attacking play then he'll be a big asset especially as it means we can move Bailey inside; something Racon needs to be aware of after his falling away performances.
  • Ambrose and Zheng were both in double figures for assists the season before last.
  • Sam might have only been credited with 9 assists last season, but he created many many more chances for others that weren't taken.

So it seems Sam's ability is measured depending on the effectiveness of other players scoring ...?

    ;o)

Not sure what everyone is talking about. Apart from his cross for the goal he lost the ball virutally every time he got it. If he looked decent, our standards must have plummeted.

It was his first game, so I'd deffo like to see him get another chance but he did not play well at all. Not that anyone else did either.

Five in midfield and still no possession till 2 down? Rubbish. One up front and pumping long balls to Mooney and Waggy. Just bad tactics.

I hope we get back to the passing game we had at the beginning of the season, or we're screwed.

That's pretty much how i say it Vicenzo. Its a shame Mark Robson wasn't still here because i think he could have really got to work with this one.
  • think too early to say whether should sign permantely, but i do think he did ok last night. his cross was excellent for the goal especially in unfavourable conditions

I think he would be useful to have on the bench for now and should defo have a run out on his favoured left side then we can judge the player, but he does look like he has a bit of pace, nice cross so i think he could do well but we will see....
  • Well, this was Parky's verdict:

"He's worked so hard for the opportunity and we thought we'd give him it tonight. We wanted to deliver some quality into the box and he has got quality.”
  • I don't think he did much really apart from the assist and needed a bit more composure with the shot he had but I haven't seen one of our wingers cross a ball like that for a long time.

Worth a place on the bench I reckon.
  • worthy for a place on the bench.
