  • Always a favourite of mine. Steady and unspectacular...was lucky enough to see him get his first cap in Chicago in 2005.

Me too. And very proud I felt too.

One of those that completely turned the crowd around. He was shocking when he first joined (Luke warm?) but not only won us over, he wore the captain's band with pride, won English caps and went on to have a fine career in the PL. Now Anfield beckons. Good luck Luke.
  • I do fear however that he's going to end up in exactly the same situation at Liverpool as he's in at Villa. How will he get in the team? Little chance of getting in ahead of Johnson for the big games, but I guess Roy does like fielding entirely different lineups for the European games.

Good point that, not many players have managed that in recent years.
  • Liverpool are just building a team of Charlton rejects :-)

Parker rumoured to be going there to replace Masc as well.
  • not sure that Konch has signed. Young has played left-back a lot at Villa so maybe Liverpool will use him there and as RB cover, better defender than Johnson though.

But he is a much better defender than Johnson isn't he?
  • The way Johnson played in the World Cup I'd stick suntan Luke in every time as first choice. I'm not sure he's Liverpool quality though - can you imagine Utd, Arsenal or Chelsea signing him? That's who Liverpool should be competing against.
  • If I was a Liverpool fan I'd be worried - they seem to be signing a lot of mid-table type players (if the rumours are true).

Disagree.Johnson's performs like a world beater against mediocre sides. It's the teams with a bit of nouse he struggles against.

I'm with you and Cordoban Addick from the previous page. But that's not a view shared by other Premier League managers or Fabio Capello. Johnson commanded a fee of £17m last summer and Young couldn't get ahead of Carlos Cuellar (a centre back) who played on the right for Villa.

I'm saying I don't think he will get in the team, not that he shouldn't get in the team.
  • They could be planning on using Johnson as a right winger and Luke as the right back, would certainly be a better right hand side than playing Johnson behind Kuyt.
  • I think as far as winning titles is concerned, having a 'steady' right back like Young isnt that big of a problem.

    Arsenal went unbeaten with Lauren
Man Utd won titles with G Neville & Wes Brown
    Chelsea had Paulo Ferrriera

imo wouldnt call any of them world class.

In their prime though, all of those players (possibly not Wes Brown) were probably the best right back in the league at the time.

I'd say Gary Neville was one of the best right backs the premier league has ever had.

Pleased for Luke Young. Always a favourite of mine and should have played more for England. I can see him starting at RB with Johnson on the right wing and Gerrard moving back into the middle. Could also see him at left back.

That's because Liverpool ARE a middle table team now. They're not the force they were and the sooner they realise that the better.

Luke was and still is a good player.

He wasn't a regular for Villa last season mainly because of the long break he took from the game following the tragic death of his brother. It took him a while to get back to the requisite level it wasn't because he no longer had the ability.

A great servant for us and I wish him every success for the future.

ok, ill give you neville....when he was fit. My point is that Liverpool with Young will give them the stability they require, like they got from Finnan when they one 5 cups in a season.
  • I like Luke, did well for us, and then had the courtesy to wish us all the best when he left (their was an article on the OS at the time)

Hope he does well there. Hodgson gets the best out of mid table ish players, just look at Konchesky, Hughes, Zamora etc at Fulham

Agreed on Ferreira. I thought it was just me - I think he was f***ing awesome the first couple of years he played for Chelsea
  • "....but there were suggestions that Young was unable to agree personal terms at Anfield as well as being reluctant to relocate to the north."

Well, if it was for family reasons that's understandable.

But if it was about personal terms (Villa pay Young £2mill a year and he has 3 years left on his contract), then I can't imagine Liverpool have offered him considerably less?

If I were in Young's boots (I wish ...!), and Villa were happy to let me go - then signing for Liverpool would be very appealing.
The opportunity for regular European football plus the prestige of playing for a world famous club like Liverpool to put on your playing CV ........

Anyway, he no doubt already proudly refers to the fact that he skippered Charlton Athletic and won all his England caps while with them........?

    ;o)
  • Very good goal by him recentely, reminded me of Wagstaff's goal against Orient at once.

    Finish

Should have the RB slot knuckled down for Villa this season.
  • Nice goal
  • He always used to do that at Charlton, the thing was it used to end up in the upper north.

  • Being linked with a loan move to either Watford or Palarse in tonights Standard.

Come on Mr. Powell you know it makes sense!...
  • I wonder could we afford him? even at say half his wages with Villa picking up the rest ? would he come to the 3rd level of footie?

Wants to move closer to his home in Wimbledon apprently...

He must have lived there when he played for us. He knows the area, knows the club and played with Chris Powell. I reckon we could get him with one phone call.
