  • [cite]Posted By: BDL[/cite]It may have been a woeful, abject display. Lacking passion and commitment. We may well be the laughing stock of the league, our rivals revelling in our misfortune. But through thick and thin, it's my team. I'd rather be an Addick than a plastic.

    Bloody plastic fans ;-)
  • The worst part of it is trying to get my six year old to support Charlton, when he just wants to support Man U. He's been to a few Charlton games but won't suppoprt them "because they are rubbish and need to practice more".

So he supports Man U and at a push Wolves (cos the first game he saw was last year's 1-3 reverse at the Valley..)

To be honest, how can I make him support Charlton when it's so poor...out of the mouth of babes I'm afraid..so he'll continue to cheer on Charlton when I take him (cos I obviously won't take him to Man U), so here's hoping we can get some spirit back in the club so he will become a Charlton fan, rather than an armchair Man U fan..
  • lol@plastic, guess I deserved that...

    :)

I have exactly the same with my 9 year old, altho oddly after Gillingham she wanted a red shirt for xmas....

I have been pondering the same question with my 2yo lad, out here he could grow up totally immune to "soccer" as it's not covered in any depth in the main stream media. Charlton might as well be a club based on Planet Neptune - I ended up watching yesterdays game at 6.30am on a dodgy internet site with commentary in Chinese. It's gonna be a tough sell - Charlton Athletic or the Calgary Flames.....
  • My Dad perservered many years ago and eventually got me to switch from European-Cup-Winners-Cup-Finalists Chelsea to thrid division Charlton. Keep at it. lads.... ;-)
  • Worse things happen at sea.
I've had worse days as Charlton supporter and far far worse in my private life.
It aint like we havnt lost before.(Although not to a non league club)
As someone else mentiioned, the 1970/80s were pretty grim.
    On to the next game
  • Must be a bad day ... I received an email from work that wound me up. As sometimes happens, people are not paying attention, do not know what they are doing, or are just being downright obstructive.

Normally I draft a response, read it a little later and tone it down ... probably a good idea as half the recipients are senior to me.

But this time ... I looked at it ... re-read it a couple of times .. knew that it would probably be sensible to hold back ... and sent it anyway.

Looking forward to the responses ;-)
  • we got promoted from the third tier in the 70's and 80's and didn't lose to a non league side in the cup ...

[cite]Posted By: oohaahmortimer[/cite]we got promoted from the third tier in the 70's and 80's and didn't lose to a non league side in the cup ...

We were also relegated in 1972 and 1979 and I remember us playing the like of Halifax at The Valley in front of 3,000 crowds in a stadium heading towards dereliction.

We also had the gates locked in 1984 when we went into administration and later to move out to Selhurst.

Don't tell me losing one game and being 2nd in the League is worse than then because at the moment it is not :-)

If we slide into the bottom half of the table and start losing weekly to the likes of Walsall & Tranmere like some of us enjured back then, I will then maybe start thinking of worst Monday's ever.

We need to look at the whole picture, not just 90 minutes.

I'll be more upset if we lose to MK Dons to be honest, because that could prove that we really are on the slide.

It may be for some of you, the worst Monday ever supporting Charlton, but I've had loads worse.

  • we got promoted after 3 seasons and one season in the third tier ....... i'll be surprised if we're promoted within 3 seasons this time round the way things are going at the moment but then that's my opinion and i'm usually right.......
until we actually go bankrupt there will always be that time we nearly went bankrupt....

that was the most embarrassing result in our history imo

F***ing awfuly day. Plastic Arsenal, Chelsea and Scouser fans all around me at work rubbing it in. Am seriously giving consideration to nutting the scouser fan who admits he's never been to Anfield or even seen them live and was born in London. FFS! The bloke is a complete tool. If I didn't need the money so badly I'd do it! :-(

    Charlton till I die!

Even if it was the most embarassing result (debateable) ,it was only one result.

Like others have said Leeds lost to Histon last season & nearly all clubs have had very embarassing results, we are not unique.
  • Nobody really took the piss today. Most people probably regard Charlton and Northwich as about the same level these days, so not really worthy of comment.

Personally, I'm not too bothered about the result, I've seen us lose 1-0 a hundred times before.
Anyway, the angst is all about ego and shit...... right?

No, my problem is the way the team played - or rather didn't.

Out-fought or even out-thought is one thing - but apart from 3 or 4 players who played professionally, the others simply didn't turn up. And they certainly didn't turn up as a team. Not even the Captain.

That is unforgiveable at any level. That's cheating, kop out. Makes me want to spit.

And as for tactics, and how to deal with the "surprise" element of a cannonball throw and a "Lurch" sized man monster, well ...... come in Mr Sparkinson, show a bit of spark between your ears.

Even I could come up with a good stab at dealing with that.
    You're the manager - why couldn't YOU ???
  • Agree with floydandharvey and of course, BDL.

Yes, it was an abject performance, virtually devoid of guts & determination by all Charlton players barring Randolph. 'Nuff said. And this, after already travelling to Carlisle 6 days earlier for nil points. " Many miles have I travelled..." and many will I travel in the future following my team . Yes MY team .

However, I am very worried about recent showings and especially our lack of goals from open play. For me, there was a small spark of optimism ignited when Leon & Deon took to the field yesterday but alas, too little too late .

How will Parky tackle the Soton match with the important MKDons game hard on its heels ? These next 2 performances ,plus the attitude of the players may well determine whether the fans keep faith with the manager or start to turn on him.

I hope it's the former for all concerned.
  • [cite]Posted By: floydandharvey[/cite]Can't believe anyone would be upset about yesterday's game.

I'm assuming that's a wind up right? Poor effort F&H

Huh - that don`t impress me much! Where were you then in 1923-24?

You cannot call yourself a real fan unless you personally know what it`s like to finish 2 places below Aberdare Athletic!!
  • And you were that real fan, oakster .... ?

    ;o)
  • [cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]And you were that real fan, oakster .... ?

    ;o)

No I only started going in 1925-26 - we finished next to bottom of the 3rd Division South :(

On the plus side we had a great cup run!!
  • According to many on this site, I was there too that season ....

Do you remember when we played Huddersfield Town at The Valley in front of 21,184 fans. Roy Goodall scored for Huddersfield from a penalty for the winner.

We all screamed Bill Rayner ....OUT !!
Shocking, we just never showed that day.

Remember we had a pint of Beasley's together after, and we wanted Sandy McFarlane to be the new manager ...?

Disgrace to lose to Huddersfield ...... even if they did win the League title that year, and for 3 years in a row.

    ;o)

I remember our lot chanting at The Huddersfield fans "come in a horse-drawn Hackney carriage, you must have come in a horse-drawn Hackney carriage"...

They didn't like that & a few half-crowns were propelled our way.
  • it's not just the result that's embarrassing, it's the performance they put in, especially on national television. I wouldn't mind if I could have said to people "we had 22 shots on goal but we just couldn't force the ball over the line, we were camped in their half all game but they got a lucky break and scored with their only shot of the game". But unfortunately, everyone saw how shit we played, I'd never get away with it.........
We've had too many 'you're not fit to wear the shirt' type performances in the last 3 or 4 seasons now, I just hope we're not going on yet another downward spiral in this season too.......anyway, up the addicks.........

  • Can't condemn anyone for slagging off our performance against Northwich ( I have on other threads) but I really have to question why anyone would not want to support their team ever again on the back of it which is what the thread appeared to be about.

After everything the club has been through, the Northwich result, performance and even the current state of the club is nothing compared to years gone by.

Razil, you obviously started supporting us at a time when we were doing okay, followed by a relatively successful period in the club's history. If you can't hack the bad times you may as well go and support someone else.
  • what on earth are you talking about alan, dont be telling people to go off and support another team.
  • Er, if u read his comments at the start of the thread he is in two minds whether to continue supporting Charlton hence my comment.
  • its more about whether I really want to continue actively supporting by having a season ticket, and or going to matches - like I said Charlton would always be my club and I would never support another team.
  • edited November 2009
Razil, I know exactly how you feel.

Charlton will always be my team but I am struggling to motivate myself to actualy go to games especially as money is tight at the moment.
