FA Cup - Do we really care?

edited November 2009 in General Charlton
Look boys and girls, we aint gonna win the cup again for a long time, if ever. Right so what does it matter if we lost to NV. I would rather we lost to them than Palace or the Spanners!!! However I just dont care about the cup's, 1 of the top 4 always win (Portsmouth excepted).
So we had our first loss to a non league side, which team hasn't lost to a non league team? we lost to welling pre season a while back.
What worries me about cup games is that we could lose our best players through injury or suspension, (Semedo could have gone for a second late challenge). As a club we need promotion not a cup run. We have no players injured after today. Yes we were utter tosh, it happens get over it. Parkinson will have to win us over again, lets hope he can. I dont give a toss about the JPT thats coming up, the league is all that matters. If we get promoted we will all look back and smile.
That said Izale McCloud should be tied up put in a canvas sack and lobbed of the Woolwich ferry!
Have a nice week!!

  • Only been one Woolwich ferry of late....... and the way Izzy is playing he would probably miss it.....
  • well said bibble... lets just get back behind the lads and concentrate on promotion..
  • I give a f**king toss that we only have ONE shot on target all game

    I give a f**king toss we have a winger who can't cross

i give a f**king toss we have strikers who spend all game getting nowhere near the ball

i give a f**king toss as I spent my hard earned money paying £12 for a ticket, £60 for pertol, getting up early on a Sunday morning and driving 500 miles round trip to watch that dross.
  • so what you saying golfaddick??
  • What a stupid thread. Of course it matters. With your attitude you should be in the team.
  • Hey Golfie, I doff my cap to you for going I really do, and thanks for sharing your pain, I watched it on TV its a lot cheaper, then I changed channels and watched the Eastenders omnibus, that Roxy is really worth a do, that would cheer you up and you wouldn't have to spend £60 on petrol!!
  • [cite]Posted By: The Red Tadpole[/cite]so what you saying golfaddick??

He's rightly angry. I honestly don't know why he goes except that he's a loyal diehard fan and so it's hardly any surprise that he has this point of view.

It's stupid to ask 'do we really care?' after the match - that's a loser's attitude.
  • so stupid you had to comment..... its done now,try asking the club for your travel money or t.v licence back, the result isnt going to change, trust me ive got sky plus...rewind after rewind.. shall we just concentrate on next week now????

JimmyM, Sorry mate your wrong, the FA Cup is not important, no big money, no prestige anymore, Man U pulled out a couple of years ago, that shows you how special it is. If you got £5 million every time you went through to the next round and Champions league for winning the final then that would be different, all that matters is the Football League, whatever division you are in. The FL league keeps our club in business the cups do not. The days of the cup meaning anything ended when they stopped Its a Knockout with Stuart Hall as pre-FA Cup final day entertainment. Also Jim its not a losers attitude but one of a realist.

That's complete bollox. Of course it matters.

It might not bother you that we were outplayed by a non league side side but it certainly bothers me!

  • I totally, totally care - the FA Cup despite being devalued over the last few years, is still the greatest club competition out there. I always want us to do well & don't buy any of the - concentrate on the league crap.

I guess if you are under a certain age, say 30, you would probably be ambivalent to the Cup, since the romance & tradition has been slowly & deliberately killed off by the Champions League nonsense becoming the be-all & end all.

For me, its still the ultimate leveler & in practically no other competition in sport could a bunch of part-time butchers, bakers & candlestick makers stick it to a spineless, gutless bunch lead by a clueless manager!

OK, so if we ever get to the semi-finals or Wembley I expect you to be doing something else like going shopping.

    What a load of crap.

I'm with Canada addick. The FA Cup means more than the Champions League which non-Champions win and isn't a league. At least with the FA Cup you 'get what it says on the tin'.

How can you say it's not important - it's what holds us above those mugs down the road.
  • BDV - We could play them next week and beat them, we were rubbish, we dont need the FA Cup, its a shame but that the reality!
Oakster - I'm well over 30, I dont watch Chumps league, yes the FA Cup is great for non league yeams to giant kill, its not the greatest cup competition anymore the CL is, but at the end of the day who would you rather be, Charlton or NV?
  • [cite]Posted By: bibble[/cite]we dont need the FA Cup, its a shame but that the reality!

What kind of reality? The reality is that it's part of our history and something to be proud of. I'm glad I don't live in your reality where some stupid money making new competition which you claim not to even watch is more important than the competition the team you support actually enters and has won.
  • Jim M , I understand your point, but which would would you choose, FA Cup Final or the 98 Play off Final. I reckon I know what most Charlton fans would want, The spanners had a cup final a couple of years ago, What a spectacle that was, I'm guessing they would have swapped it for a play off final where at least they could compete rather than having a nice day out at wembley!!!
  • The issue should not be the fact that we are out of a competition that we had little or no chance of winning but that we :

    (a) lost to a non league team
    (b) not only lost but played appallingly
    (c) the above was broadcast live on national tv

Completely embarassing. Where the hell is your pride ?
  • Jim we won it in '47, times change mate, I dont like it either I wish we could compete in the FA Cup the reality is we cant, wether we go out today our the 3rd round against Chelser is immaterial, the league ie where its at right now, maybe it will change back, I hope it does but right now the FA Cup is a waste of time for clubs like ours, great for non league teams to have a go at pro teams but we have to move up the league or we will stagnate like the rest
  • [cite]Posted By: bibble[/cite]Jim M , I understand your point, but which would would you choose, FA Cup Final or the 98 Play off Final.

I'd rather win the FA Cup because I dreamt about it as a boy, long before the play-offs even existed.

It's an honour to win - the play-offs are just a promotion which should be earnt by finishing in the top two.

And if we got to the final I'd want us to compete and win. Unrealistic now maybe but not so only five years ago, and this was something that constantly frustrated me when we were a good Premiership team.

Now I want us to progress, get a big team and pull off our own shock, and make some money (which strangely we can't make in the CL because we can't enter it).

Strange that you can see the joy a shock brings to NV without wanting it yourself.
  • ~Jim The joy for NV is it keeps them in business like getting in the Championship OR Prem helps keeps a club our size in business.

I'll be frank: I hate people who say 'times change' with regards to a negative change when the only reason it changes is because of the apathy of that same person and his like.

As for the rest of your post I think it's equally a load of bollocks.

Sorry, I'm not normally this rude on here but this is really pissing me off and off logging off once I've clicked on 'add your comments.' So you can call even me a c*** if you want but I won't be here to reply. I'll be in bed dreaming of the year 2017 again (the year I have always dreamt we'd win it)

  • Alan - Yes its embarrasing, we were woeful, I've seen some shockers in the 35 years Ive supported us, but I do have pride, however I temper my fallen pride by telling myself the cup does not matter, if we were playing them for a promotion place we would have won!! The players know the importance of the FA Cup V League status!!!

    Sleep well Jim!! Sweet dreams.
    I think he's tired!! ;o)
  • But the whole point is that we were shite and have been for weeks.

So the players know the importance of the Cup vs League ? Why have we played equally badly in the League for the past few weeks then ?

What Oakster said about the romance of the FA Cup - at least for us oldsters.

Plus whatever competition it was, millions of people watched us on tv and wondered which was the league team and which was the team of part-timers.

We had enough of being a laughing stock last season. This season we might be in a lower league. But at least people stopped laughing at us. Until today...
  • the fa cup or the playoffs.......a playoff for teams who dont finish in the top two......let me think thats a hard one, drop it out mate.
  • Was at the game today and this has to rank with the Wycombe game from 3 years ago as an all time low performance. Fair play to Northwich they fully deserved to win and a draw would have been a travisty. We have to want to progress in the F.A.Cup and only winning promotion will start to wipe the memory of todays showing
  • the fa cup or the playoffs have just been compared as i live and breath.
  • For me the game symbolised how far we have fallen and in such a short time. No shame in losing to a smaller club but it was the way we did.
We seem to be losing our way again.
Next week will be a key indication if we really have a team that can challenge in this league. Today was back to our worst.
  • 3blokes......spot on. All about HOW we played / lost not what competition it happened to be in.
  • The defeat itself is not important. Lord knows as Charlton fans we've seen enough defeats over the years be it cups or league!

What is important is the MANNER of the defeat. No desire or relish for the battle with few exceptions and then, allegedly, not even having the class to acknowledge the travelling fans.

Parky needs to sort the attitude out and quick!
