Overreaction

edited November 2009 in General Charlton
Yes it was an awful performance and we embarassed ourselves but I would much rather us get that type of performance out of our systems in the cup and concentrate on the types of games we have coming up. MK Dons next week is vital and we also have Bristol Rovers coming up. I know football does not work like this but if given the choice between a win today and a win next weekend, then next weekend would always prevail.
also today, it will hopefully give certain players a real kick up the arse and get them back to their best, Sam and Racon were poor today and have been for the last couple. they really need to pull some good performances out the bag, otherwise their positions have to be under threat.
All the talk of Parky out and Board out etc, seem very premature and totally ott. we are second in the league ffs and have a good chance of a much more successful season than we have recently been used to. Parkinson has done a fine job this year and the board seem to be rectifying some of their previous mistakes (the fact we have been able to hold on to Shelvey, Bailey etc has to be credited), it is too early in the season to say they have made up for Dowie, the 13million, Reid etc but seriously we should at least wait until after the vital xmas period before we start questioning the managers performance and the success of the season so far.
The players were poor and I hope they give us a reaction next week, Parkinson is no mug so lets have some faith in him and put as much emphasis on MK Dons as possible as the game seems massive.
On a final note, Parkinson needs to consider McLeods position at the club, even his strongest supportere must admit today he was a disgrace (his performance and discipline)

FFS FAITH IN PARKINSON !!!! please do tell me why i should have that ?
  • Sorry Dan but from where I stood today there were very few players who looked like they cared about playing for the club, the levels of effort they put in and the fact they lost.
  • Where we any different in cup games in Curbs' later years?

He inherited a farce, handled last season with great dignity. Restored confidence to some players (Sam and Youga especially) and has built a team that looks capable of bouncing back. His signings have been shrewd, especially with no money and the performances this season have been generally very good. What more could be have done this season to please some people, In july if you asked the fans would they take 2nd place and 2 defeats from out league games, do you really think any would have said No. We are behind Leeds who will probably win the league and have a fine chance of 2nd place.
He is also responsible for Shelvey being a first team regualar in a position that suits him, Bailey on the left and Elliot rise to be be undisputed number 1
  • yes he is great.

Sorry mate, but this is one if the darkest days in our history - on the back of three or four pretty dark years.

First ever defeat to non-league oppo - Jeez. Well done to all of our "record breakers" out there tofay.

Sure, there is the odd crack or two as knees jerk in other threads, but it's perfectly understandable in this instance after such a shockingly inept, passionless and embarrassing display.
  • Quote from Black Forest Red on another thread:
Yes it was, let's look at what he's done to date - he had no money to spend, morale was rock bottom and he had to repair a defence that last season was the worst I can ever remember and that soaked up a lot of time scouting replacements etc and competing with a lot of other clubs for free transfers. Getting in Dailly was a good move - I presume there would have been other clubs in for him. Richardson ditto and Youga looks a different player from last year (and even the first few matches this year), Sodje was a good signing and Llera is limited but whole-hearted. Given that Dailly, Sodje, Richardson and Llera cost nothing I think that's excellent business. Plus Parky had to see the back of several players - Holland, Ambrose, ZZ, Hudson, Fortune etc.
  • I think the fact that it was live on TV on a Sunday lunchtime adds to the embarrassment. I'm sure everyone else has had the numerous texts from everyone they know about it!

  • Don't get me wrong, I am very embarassed and upset at our performance but the point is- there has been a huge overreaction regarding the manager and the board. It was one awful game though and today could be the kick up the backside we need!
  • Good try Dan but something has gone badly wrong in recent weeks. The early confidence has disappeared and there is no belief in the team anymore (Carlisle performance really rang the alarm bells). Let's see what happens at Sothampton and against MK next week. Can't say I'm hopefully though.
  • Well said cafcdan18. Over-reaction is the norm on this board unfortunately.
  • Its a long season and our home form has been excellent! Away from home is where alarm bells have began to ring, but then we have a small squad that imo is a little weak when a couple of players are not in it so it is to be expected that we are not going to be good every week!
  • Sometimes a bit of overreaction is exactly what's needed, much as that goes against my normal approach.

I'd say today is a perfect candidate, so let people let off steam if it helps.
  • I will be a lot more upset if we lose next Sat, but then cup upsets have been the norm as a charlton fan in the last 10years!
  • [cite]Posted By: cafcdan18[/cite]it will hopefully give certain players a real kick up the arse

Shouldn't getting relegated have provided all the 'motivation' required for the task this year? Or the recent results? Or professionalism? Or being on the tele maybe? Or maybe just Parkinson's man management? Or the £1000's they are paid every week??? Or do we just require require a beating from a team 80 odd places beneath us to make them sit up and put a bit of effort in next week in which case everythings hunkydory.

It's not an overreaction IMO. I don't know how old you are but from the user name 18 right? We'll those of us a bit older can testify that these results never go away and in decades from now people will still remember this day and up to now I've always been proud that we'd managed to avoid losing to non-league and getting lumped in with the Newcastles & Coventry's (no matter how close we came). Parky and the team have just taken that away from me.
  • don't know how old you are but from the user name 18 right?

No- I am 20, I know the result will not go away and will be remembered for years but a lot of teams get dumped out by non leaguers and it does not make you are worse club. So what we'll be laughed at for a while but there will probably be a bigger upset before the 4th round of this years cup.
  • It's only an overreaction if it's based on this one performance/result.
From my perspective it isn't it's a culmination of very poor performances over the last couple of months (other than Leeds) and a deep worry that i can't see anything that leads me to believe we can turn things around again. I've stuck up for Parky, i like the bloke and have been very happy to give him the benefit of the doubt since he became manager (inherited a bad situation, no money, decent start to season etc...) but i just can't see anything that i can cling on to anymore that he is the right man for the job. The players are to blame aswell, possibly more so, but unfortunately we can't change all the players and the buck stops with the manager.
  • Tend to agree with DRAddick. Our performances of late have been very poor and predictable. If this was a one off performance then there would be no cause for concern. But, it wasn't.

I want Parkinson to do well because I like the guy. However, are we really performing to the best of our abilities? At some stage the manager has to be held accountable.

[cite]Posted By: The Red Robin[/cite]Where we any different in cup games in Curbs' later years?
    Yes.

    How?

Imo we'd have been similarly limp, but we'd have been limp with much better players so would have scraped through.
  • Dagenham and Redbridge, were we really much better at The Valley that day? Obviously taking into account the fact that day, Kiely, Kinsella etc played
  • We were bad that day but at last we tested the goal keeper, did we today????
  • I am a supporter of Parkie as my posting on Hill to The Valley illustrates and I applauded the giving of a years extension, however he was given the extension for what he had done and the prospect for the future. The board need to support him, wether through the take over or injecting more cash in January for two - three players. However, between now and then with the resources that he has, Parkie needs to dramatically turn things round and make some hard decisions, if we are not to waste the early good start to the season.

the current situation reminds me of Curbs in I think the 1st Prem season after winning the Div 1 championship. We were tonked by West Ham - 4-0 - and Curbs made some big decisions on key players including dropping talisman Kinsella, we went on to hold our position in the Premiership for a good few years. Its this type of decision that Parkie has to make. Be decisive and be ruthless!
  • [cite]Posted By: charlton_carl[/cite]We were bad that day but at last we tested the goal keeper, did we today????

    Not really
  • I've supported the club for over 50 years and have experienced many highs and lows supporting Charlton.

At Northwich today was not the lowest of the lows. Yes it was a poor display with a lack of effort and skill, but it was no worse than at Carlisle, and that to me is more important than the fact that we lost to non league opposition. The team have now put in two consecutive inept performances against oppostion we should have beaten. I think we would all agree that promotion is our target and not a cup run, however successful cup runs can instill confidernce and extra finance.

Today's performance did improve after the substitutions and I suggest if we had started with the team that finished we would have won the game. But we didn't and Parkey needs to give some other players a run out on Wednesday so he can pick the best players to beat MK Dons, the result against Saints doesn't matter, but the performance will matter.
  • Move Baily in the middle
    Drop Racon
    Sam Out
    Waggy In
    The Clown Out

Agreed, time to bring back Shelvey to league games, Spring and McKenzie as well. Also get rid of McLeod (permanently), Omuzusi and after today Racon can have a week on the bench

Didn't we get it out of our system at Gillingham or Colchester ?
  • think we have lots more of those performances just around the corner
