  • [cite]Posted By: queensland_addick[/cite]As I won't be able to make it there (for obvious reasons) could somebody please ask Peter Varney if there is any likelyhood of Curbs returning in the near future?

Of course that's a question PV expects to be asked and I can guarantee you he will be one way or another.
But put yourself in his place....how on earth could he answer.....one way or the other.
  • I would like to attend this.

could I ask if a PA sytem is used as I am profoundly deaf

    Thanks

There is a microphone and speaker although but not a PA system. It's my guitar amp.

It is however a relatively small room rather than a large hall.

You are more than welcome to come along. If you ask for me (Ben) or any of the committee we will get you a seat in the best position for your particular needs.

I'm deaf not blind I'll try to attend as I hope to finish work early
  • DPFC....Ben has suggested he can allocate you a suitable seat for your particular needs....will that be one where you can see and hear the guest speakers more clearly or one at the bar....he can sort you out for either eventuality.
One assumes that if he gives you the later the former won't really matter too much after half an hour or so.
    See ya there mate.
  • Anyone else popping along tonight ?
  • Sorry, can't be there, same reason as David White

a big thank you to Steve & Peter for coming along and making it another great evening.

Nice to met Ken from Bexley, JVL and a few other lifers.

Will try to put some notes up later. No shock revelations but some insights and some laughs
Any one else. who was there please feel free to chip in.
  • Very good evening gobsmacked on the total cost of varney, gray and the clown in wages and transfer fees.MR PARDEW YOU ARE A DISGRACE.
  • I will try to remember what was said but this is not a comprehensive report.

Other lifers can chip in to fill the gaps.

There were about 70 people there which was pleasing given Sunday's result.

As ever PV and SS were happy to share what they could although as a current director PV was, quite rightly, guarded about some issues. When we invited him he wasn't a director!

It wasn't that the questions weren't asked just that they weren't always answered as fully as either PV, SS or we would have perhaps liked. PV joked at one point after someone opened yet another question with "going back to the takeover" that "is Going back to the takeover" the catch phrase for the night?"

PV explained that his role is twofold. 1. to get £10m of re-investment in place and that is, bar some paperwork, done. 2. to find new money ie a takeover

PV said that there were 4 "serious" buyers at various times but that you always had the "kid in Essex with £5.50 in his Halifax account who wakes up one morning and wants to buy a football club". From what he said it appears that at least one of those buyers has been on the scene all summer and is still around. "we are talking to people" was what was said.

Obviously there were no names or clues as SS and PV explained if a buyer has asked for confidentiality and there are signed confidentiality agreements then he wasn't going to put any deal at risk or facing legal penalties by giving out names.

When asked was there a profile for the type of buyer we wanted SS said "rich". PV said that the board want someone with the resources and plans to fund the club going forward.

34 clubs are up for sale and as shown at Newcastle and Pompey finding the right buyers is not easy. The issues Charlton had are not unique to us said PV.

This was why, PV said, the recent re-investment was so important. It stabilised the club and made it more attractive to the right type of buyers. He said there are a lot of hawks looking to get clubs cheap and/or wait until they are in administration. The new investment means we are stable and that there is a "different atmosphere" around negotiations.

SS was asked what he has been doing since leaving the club. He said he was very sad to leave after 10 years and another 3 at Selhurst but half saw it coming. He's now working freelance and his first job was securing the KRBS shirt sponsorship. He's also working with LB Greenwich on their Olympic options as well as the Amateur Boxing Association www.steve-sutherland.co.uk to find out more.

Work to do - more later.

The figure of £11,000,000 was mentioned as the sum spent on the transfer and wages of Messers Varney,Gray and McLeod...........what a 'spank in the crank' that was/is.
    Need I say more!
  • glad you said it soundas as I was pondering actually posting the amount, what ever feelings people have about Dowie PV said we recouped a lot of what was spent, but Alan Pardew as far as I am concerned has taken this club back over 20 years in the space of 18 months, words cannot express my feelings for the man.

Given that fact maybe we as a fanbase should show more tolerance for Parky's position.

No wonder he hasn't had any money to work with!
  • we should bring back dowie ... he was undefeated in the cup!!
  • Well that's not any use to us now, is it?

Horrendus figure, that really is shocking. I didn't think I could hate Alan Pardew more than I already do.

  • it beggars belief Andy Gray always was and always will be a football journeyman, tyhe maximum we should have paid for him should have been £500k.

    OK,

As Suicidal Steve and Sound as said PV said that while Dowie spent a lot on fees a lot was re-couped although a lot went on wages as well. We made a profit on Ried, got most of the money back on Diawara and half of Tarore while Puso cost little.

Unfortunately PV wouldn't say much about the Elephant Man as litigation may still take place although PV said in some ways a court case would be better than a settlement as the fans would finally hear what happened.

As NSS and Soundas said PV didn't feel that many of Pardew's signings had proved worthwhile (although he didn't mention Racon or Semedo but I guess after Sunday even they are in the maybe camp)

SS and PV were both equally depressed about some of the football played last year and the Northwich game. SS said that he went to most away games last year, half knowing that it would be his last at the club and couldn't believe what he was seeing. SS said that when he saw Derek Ufton, who never leaves early, get up and leave early at Sheff Wed with almost a tear in his eye, he knew it was all over and there was no way back.

Both said that what they wanted was a team that competed and was entertaining. PV rejected the idea that being in the prem was boring and that that was based perhaps on the last year or so of Curbs time. PV said he wanted to see players like Hunt, Stuart, Jensen, parker play for Charlton again and in the top flight.

Asked what was the likelyhood of Curbs every returning PV didn't really give an answer but did speak about Curbs alot. Said they were friends and got on well. PV said that AC was tired and if you looked at him when he left and then 6 months later he was a different man after the break. He said that Ferguson still gets the credit for the plane tickets to New Zealand but it was CAFC who paid for them.

He spoke alot about AC but I can't remember all of it (the Newcastle Brown was kicking in by then). PV did say that in 2000 when we were waiting on the Man City result to see if we were promoted having played the night before AC decided that AC, Mervyn Day, PV and Keith Peacock should go to Bournemouth for a meal and a film. PV said why don't we just watch it on TV at home but AC wanted to go to Bournemouth so they did. This ended up with the Hotel were they were eating being raid and police fighting in the dinning room. They then went to the pictures were AC bought loads of sweets (appears he is a sweet fiend) and then was constantly told to shut up by others as he offer Mervyn licorice allsorts in a loud voice. And that was how the Championship was promoted.

Asked about Parky's role under Pardew PV said that while some managers such as Curbs would have his whole management team with him until 7.00pm at night going over line ups, tactics and asking for others opinions other managers would make their own decisions without much reference to others. The inference was, to me at least, clear.
  • PV said when asked about giving PP a contract extension that if you or I were working on contract that was running down and you were likely to be out of work would you be 100% focused or would you be looking around for other work, worrying, etc, etc.

He said PP hasn't been given a 3 year contract, it's a 1 year extention but that we need stability and consistancy and this was part of that.

PV is part of the tribunial looking in the Turner transfer but only really said that we will have to see.

SS and PV defended ACs decision to let Turner go as at the time he wasn't going to get in our premiership team due to his lack of pace and as Curbs was only thinking of Charlton as a prem team it was right to let him go. PV said that you have to look at which clubs come in for players released. No CCC clubs were keen to pick Turner up and only Brentford wanted him, no one else was interested.

I did ask PV about Dickson (to keep Addick Addict happy : - ) ) but was only told that he was done the pecking order but that these things change.

PV was asked if there was a list of players wanted and player to be sold. PV said "yes, I've got it here" picking up a file on the table. He was joking before you ask.

He said yes they are looking at players most likely a striker and a left sided player but a lot will depend on any injuries between now and January and what monies can be freed up by outgoing transfers. Any takeover would mean a total different scenario.
