After watching the brilliant documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" ( released 2012 but I saw it for the first time this week) I shall be listening to the two Rodriguez CD's I bought on the back of the Documentary, Cold Fact (1970) and Coming from Reality (1971).I cannot believe I missed this Guy before this week ! What a fantastic programme. What an amazing man.
I was 8 years old when I first heard this song (62 in Feb) later I had a go and became (what I like to call) a modest singer/songwriter. Though my style is nothing like Bobbie Gentry's, I can't think of a bigger influence (popular music) on my listening and writing than her. The distant laconic delivery, the lonely voice, but mainly the masterly setting of the real time scene through different angles/characters. When listening to this whole wonderful Album you get hints of it in preceding songs. The whole thing is a masterpiece
* A special mention to Jimmie Haskell's gorgous strings arrangement (Young Fagen and Becker must have noticed too cause they used his services a few years later...)
