Can't say I'm surprised tbh - he's such a wet lettuce and I can see them blowing their promotion this year if they aren't careful.
Never been impressed with him as a gaffer
Yes, they are one point off the top of the table after all, he had to go. Strange timing after a home win too, though I have never rated him tbh, as has been said, too much of a wet lettuce to instil confidence in his ability to get the best out of players.
Apparently they had their smallest attendance at the Riverside last night. Gibson may have took this as a clear sign that Southgate is out of favour with alot of fans and decided it was time for a change.

They are the most plastic of all fans. Gibson has propped that club up for donkeys.
Gibson is not a fool, in fact he's a very astute man. Nor is he someone who does anything knee-jerk. Results aside I reckon he's seen things going on that indicate Southgate has lost his edge, his quotes suggest so.
"I appointed Gareth in a situation that was greatly unfavourable to him. He is a good man and has all the qualities and integrity that we wanted in a manager.
"However, the time is right for change and that change has had to be made. Gareth will always be welcome at our football club. English football needs people of his stature and we feel certain that this experience will serve him well.
"Gareth deserves another opportunity once he has had the chance to rest and refresh himself."
Strange. He inherited a club where McClaren had wasted any millions he had on poor signings and big wages. It was quite amazing that Southgate kept them up after virtually his whole strikeforce left. The biggest mistake he made was signing Alves, one which I thought would come off for them.
Maybe Gibson sees that the champ is wide open and fresh impetus could quite easily bring them an automatic. It seems clear to me that Southgate's present squad should be more consistent in the champ, yet in some matches they've been very listless and virtually not even competed the result. It's hard for me to tell when having only seen highlights, but their season seems to have been a few wins then appalling home form against teams that aren't even physical; physical is something nearly all of their young players cope with and revel in, so I don't understand say why they lose at home to Watford????
It's strange because Gibson has always shown loyalty & wanted continuity. I think he's finally run out of patience with him missing that penalty in Euro 96.

It's strange how some players just don't adapt. He had a better scoring record of goals per game in Holland than Van Nistelrooy did. Yet he was a total flop.
Strange decision - funny timing given so much loyalty in the past. Can only think that Gibson already has the replacement lined up, but risky move and could put Boro on a very slippery slope.

Very true. I hope they don't go the same way we have. They're a good club who have always supported English managers and players under Gibson. Ipswich are also reminding me of us last season, especially with the 13 games without a win and that last minute equaliser last night.

I feel sorry for Southgate, I know he's a bit of a drip but when you look at the way the Boro has been dismantled right in front of his eyes in recent seasons it's no wonder they're where they are, poor bloke didn't stand a chance...

Former Boro centre back.
i thought tables didn't count just a short while into the season.
