[cite]Posted By: SpicedAddick[/cite]Best of luck to you... I wish I was just discovering CAFC for the first time again.

Best comment I've read so far.

Over the years I have introduced a number of my mates to Charlton, none of them, even if they supported other clubs have stopped going. The opposite in fact, they all come back time and again. Why? There just is something about the place that they like. It's friendly (without being intrusive). It's relatively straightforward to get to by car, bus or train. The stadium has a mixture of old and new about it, and the days experience, whatever happens on the pitch is generally well-received.

I've actually lost count of those I meet who tell me they go to the Valley from time to time and they have a soft spot for Charlton. You never get anyone say they've got a soft spot for Millwall. West Ham, although it has an East End community feel about it, has always had a big hooligan element and as for Palace well would you want to watch football in a sh*thole surrounded by a load of Nigels.
  • If your coming as a neutral, may I suggest that it would be cheaper to watch us than the others.

yep,and when we do reach the promised land again a season ticket at the home of football will see first class exhibitions for about a score a game. we don't take any away fans anyway so don't worry about the cost of their grounds.
  • come to a few games and you will find out.
  • West Ham - think of a stadium full of Cockney wankah (from Viz) lookandsoundalikes.
Millwall - do you aspire to being Danny Dyer, if not unless you have a persecution complex (apparently no one likes them) and can say "pwopa nawty" don't bother.
Palace - dont, just dont. Think of the reaction when you go home and tell your mates you've just invested in a season ticket at Selhurst Park...

    Simple choice really...
  • Choose Charlton. Please.
  • I think Big Vern from Viz also attends West Ham home matches when he's not 'on a job' or shooting himself in the face to avoid capture by the 5-0.
  • [cite]Posted By: dj-ecfc[/cite]Having just moved to the area why should I come and watch Charlton rather than the other clubs.
As others have said try going to a few and see what suits you, character wise.

To be honest the total number of fans/league position/reputation that you always imagined each to have, will turn out to be not quite correct, the only way is to stand on the terraces (or sit in the stands as it is nowadays).

  • I cant believe no ones mentioned the noise that is generated around the Valley on match days. How the fans sing thoughout the game and create such a fantastic atmosphere. How they get behind the team right from the start no matter how the score goes, always encouraging the team and willing them to do well. Maybe you should check all the teams out because its not quite as its painted on here. Yes you get idiots at west ham but christ you get them at charlton too, and if i'm not to mistaken probably just as many rats too spicedaddict. So despite what i said earlier, if you want a good atmosphere with football trying to be played the way it should be then maybe you should check out West Ham. Overpriced yes but in terms of atmosphere none of the others hold a candle to it.........(Uncle aka RAT)

But uncle, you don't seem to understand - I don't want all of that rowdy singing and chanting disrupting my nice quiet viewing with my thermos, prawn sandwich and a rug, thank you very much.

Atmosphere? That's a Russ Abbot song isn't it?

Just when it seemed like Charlton was becoming your number 1!! :-)
  • Well I think you should always have Exeter City as your no 1 local team and support them when they are in town. When they are up north or maybe at home, come and support us cos we are decent and fun.

My American and a German mates came to a game once and they still rave on about us.
  • dj-ecfc
    Up to you fella!
For me you do not get better than Charlton, fit in or off
  • dj-ecfc, perhaps you should consider popping over the other side of the river, to say hello to Alex Inglethorpe and check out the old team of your home town club's director of football? ;-)

In all seriousness, Charlton have always tried to play football the right way although their fans tend to have a reptuation as being anoraks. Millwall, well, can anyone pay Millwall a compliment of any kind? Palace, just a bunch of stripey nigels with an orange tanned chairman. West Ham, they won the World Cup, dont you know? These days, they're just Spurs' feeder club... and do you really want to watch the same team as Danny Dyer? So, out of that four, I'd pick Charlton. Not a tough choice really.
  • Thanks for all the tips and adviI ended up in the North Upper, it was a good view and good value at £17.

The club seemed to have a community feel to it and the people were friendly.

It was not surprising there was not a lot chances playing 4.5.1 and Oldham content on playing a defensive 4.1.4.1.
Oldham did not look like scoring all afternoon with Abbott up front. I thought Charlton were much the better side.

Since I have been living here, I have now seen Crystal Palace and West Ham. Both get a thumbs down. No atmosphere at Palace. There are too many prima donnas in the premiership and it is far too expensive to go to West Ham.

I enjoyed the afternoon despite the lack of chances and goals. On the downside I missed not being able to stand up, you cannot beat terraces. However Charlton get a thumbs, up I will be back.

I am glad I did not go to Huddersfield, it would be a dire journey home.
  • To be fair dj it was empty today and i think the aatmosphere was quiet (even by our standards) so shudder to think what it must have been like at selhurst
