Leeds v Charlton - Post match views

edited October 2009 in General Charlton
Returned from Leeds a few hours ago

A very good performance.

A lot of lessons were learnt from Tuesday and after seeing that this afternoon, has confirmed that the other day was a blip.

Draw was a fair result and I would have taken that before the game.

Great atmosphere

We contained Leeds superbly in difficult conditions. As for our chances, Shelvey headed agonisingly wide and Burton had a great chance on the rebound.

Well done team, Parky and the the 1800 or so Addicks who made the trip.

  • Agree with MA

In the 1st half Leeds were better and we didn't try to attack that much, as if we didn't believe we could win. However in the 2nd half once we played our passing game we were as good as them. Sodje made the defence a more solid unit, Racon held the midfield but our attack didn't have many chances. Towards the end it seemed that we had settled for a draw and contained Leeds with few problems. Our support was noisy and gave as good as they got, the team showed their appreciation at the end lead by Kins.

    A good result.
  • I thought it was a great performance. Equal in the first half and we bossed the second half. Sodje was immense, Richardson had a great game, Racon and Bailey as good as ever and Spring having his best game. Parky did well by changing things around after 30 minutes or so bringing Bailey inside and moving Racon wide left and after that we ran the game. All in all a super performance and I think we now know there is no better team in the division than us..
  • Didn't go (well done to those that did) but my gut feeling is we COULD now have the best back 4 (5 with Elliott) in the division.
  • i take it you didn't go colchester either then

Sodje was awesome today even when they brought on the 10 foot Showumni he still outjumped him. Good solid performances all over the pitch but I have to disagree with Spring, I felt the 1st half passed him by and perhaps thats why Bailey was moved inside for the 2nd.

Draw a fair result, we had some good chances but the Robbie made a couple of really good saves from them so evens really, I am a very tiny bit disappointed as with a bit more composure in the final 3rd we could have won that as we bossed the majority of the 2nd half. Even so I would have grabbed a point before the game so overall I'm satisfied.
  • No but been to the others and have a sense of the competition. I like our full backs, I like Dailly (who wouldn't?) and (like you no doubt) I've seen Sodje. Elliott is ok too...he's not Kiely, Bolder or Johns....but ok. If I'm wrong (come May) then forgive me, if I'm right, then hey....that'd be nice for all of us.
  • Just home on coach.
Good day- good performance - good result.

Men of the match - Sodje & Richardson.
  • Just got back via the random bus service into Leeds city then by train.

To be honest it would be hard to draw too many conclusions from today given the conditions, but we adapted better and over 90 minutes probably shaded it. Thought Spring had a good 2nd half.

Was Enoch Showunmi the worse player you've ever seen? Some of our fans chanted "Leaburn, Leaburn" when he got the ball but that was so unfair on big Carl.

We battled superbly & really dominated the second half. Sodje & Richardson were excellent and I thought Racon was a revelation when switched out wide left instead of Bailey. With just a little luck & a little more composure from Izale we could have won it. But a draw was a fair result and well done to the whole team & to the supporters, who more than held their own in a very intimidating atmosphere.
  • watched second half on justin tv, very impressed with second half and we more then matched them. let hope we can build on this performance and get back on winning ways

  • Just got in.

Long old trip for a blank but good performance.

    Write more tomorrow, knackered
  • Good performance, thought we looked more likely to win in the last 15 when Mcleod came on. Sodje was superb against Leaburn.

Thought the Leeds team and support would be a lot better but I dont think the weather helped with either.

Long day for a 0-0 but everyone I spoke to before the game said they would take a point.

Good support from our lot despite some over zealous stewarding (note the entire Revie end were allowed to stand)

And just for Ooo Ahh the mighty Exeter brought about 700 more to Leeds than we did :)
  • Great game. Leeds were,t a passing team but more a hoofing one. Really surprised. Beckford looked skillful when he got the ball in the first 20 mins or so but after we settled and moved things around we were in control. Thought racon and spring mis communicated a few times at the beginning but when the positions switched it worked much better. I also thought youga played really well. Couldn't fault any of our boys.

Enoch showami is frank bruno in football kit. What a useless lump.

    cheers sarfend

yeah but exeter is much nearer to leeds and they have bigger home crowds than us and are higher up the table and a lot of exeterites emigrated towards leeds years back ;-)
ok it was a big game for them .....

anyway what a point ..... 6 points from our next two home league games and even i might fancy us for automatic prmotion!!
  • Agree with the posts on here so far. I thought we were the better team (just) and played the better football. Sodje was my MOM, considering he hasn't played for about 6 months. Richardson was equally excellent. Racon was very skillful and just seemed to want to take a touch too much or beat a man too many.

Elliot made an excellent save and did well.
    Richardson - very good game
Youga - good game, apart from once near the end when he lost possession and didn't get up and chase back quick enough, which nearly cost us a goal.
Dailly - usual top class performance
Sodje - Excellent both in the air and on the ground
Sam - Decent but quiet game
    Bailey- Decent game
Racon- Very skillful, nearly our matchwinner, but not quite
Shelvey - Another good game, bit better than the last few
Spring- Good game and 2 decent shots
Burton - Decent game, only one effort, which was offside in any case.
    Wagstaff- Decent

Overall it was a very assured and confident performance, which I found most pleasing. We took a point, which we richly deserved against the best team in this division (though Snodgrass didn't play and Becchio went off on the half hour, which helped).

On this performance I think Leeds and Charlton will take the top 2 spots.

I can't see many teams getting anything there, with 30,000 partisan fans and no doubt the officials favouring them, like they did yesterday (and their iffy penalty awarded in Tueday's game at home to Carlisle).

Our vocal support was very good, well done to all.

On the games I've seen so far, which is all of them except Tranmere. I think the top 4 will be :-

    Leeds
    Charlton
    Norwich
    Colchester
  • Can you sit down please
  • Decent game, they moved it about well in tricky conditions, but we started to in the second half when we got a proper out ball on the left. I'd not agree that they're a long ball side at all - a major factor in the shape of the game that most people seemed to miss was Beccio's comedy injury. With a big lump like Enoch coming on in his place they lost a lot of the passing threat that they'd had in the early stages. I'd not be too quick to write them off on the basis of the last 60 minutes - I'd expect them to continue to be the team to beat this season.

And... what a crowd for the third division. A lot of premiership teams couldn't get that on a good run. Impressive (crappy ground though, really).
  • my first game of season, and seeing a new team to me. they looked adequate in the first half and strong throughout the second. on balance a fair result. i was far more impressed with our defence than the forwards. i think it showed really why these two teams are at the top, as the defences bossed the game, with the forwards of both teams all too often shooting off target. as the game opened up in the middle of the second half i actually thought we would go on to get a goal, but i cant fault the effort throughout the team. before the game i was nervous. now having watched them play away at the top team in the division, i doubt we have any teams to fear for the rest of the season. i also thought elland road looked ropey. i guess its a sign that they have fallen from grace in the big money teams league. there were pillars in every stand which is something i wouldnt have expected. our fans were excellent even if the 6 blokes in from of me and the old fella kept standing a singing 'stand up if you love charlton' lol, to which my dad '69' bless him kept shouting 'sit down'. one chant made me smile, 'your ground's too big for you' when leeds filled it with 38,000 against liverpool last week!

on another point, the ticket fiasco for yesterdays game was a farce. after waiting 10 days for my tickets to arrive, on friday i received two tickets for the colchester game??? i rang the club to be told to collect some duplicate tickets from the leeds ticket office. when i got there tat 2.00pm they told me my name wasnt on the duplicate tickets list. i waited around till 2.40pm when the tickets were brought by someone from charlton and luckily mine was with them. i was really sweating as i had rang the club shop which is closed on away game saturdays. much as it all turned out ok, i think the club have messed a few people around this last week as has already been posted.

Leeds!!! That's why they are top with a superior g/d. Charlton played well away with the awful gale conditions and Leeds didn't look a patch on what they are capable of.Everyone has an off day as Charlton found out against Colchester. Don't underestimate also what Leeds can do on their day. They were poor yesterday and they have now a string of (not serious) casualties of which they now have a 2 week break. A fit Becchio,Snodgrass,Crowe and Higgs the game would have been different.
  • Leeds showed interesting signs of weakness. Beckford was absent for large parts of the game. Without Becchio they were toothless. Defence often static, in fact I was disappointed we did not go on to win in the last 10 instead of settling for what we had.
Conditions poor, ground tattier every time we go. Their support quiet and fearful which transmitted to their team. I expected Leeds to go for us and impose themselves on the division. I think they gave encouragement to the likes of Norwich.
Enoch was just hideously embarrassing, poor bastard 31000 laughing at your childlike efforts. Falling over the ball was comedic genius.

Enoch is awful admitted but he is better than Kandol. God knows why Charlton want him. Ive seen him miss many a goal when stood right in front of the mouth. Leeds still have the best firepower in the division and Beckford cannot be expected to have a great game everytime he plays. Snodgrass was missed that was obvious and Leeds were the better team before Becchio was sent off. I think a draw is a fair result considering the injuries. A 2 week rest will restore early form.

Defence was static? Defence is patched up. Full back injured, left back injured, number 1 goalie injured and still not leaking goals!!.That's why a big squad is vital.
  • And our problem is that we don't have a big squad, that was Sodje's first start and he's now missing for two games, which means that Llera's back. At right back we have Solly who has no first team starts to his name but is "promising" as cover, at LB Grant Basey who has some first team experience. Our reserve keeper is ok and I've no worries about him stepping up if needed.

Into midfield and attack we are simmilarly lacking quality/experienced reserves, yet we sent Chris Dickson on-laon to Bristol Rovers. From what I've seen of Charlton and Leeds we are the best two teams in L1, but our weakness is a lack of depth in the squad. To date we've been lucky with injuries and have no suspensions, but a couple of injuries and the odd red card and we could see our promotion campaign veer off-course.

Loved the game. Brought a mate who was thoroughly impressed with Racon. Thought the 'stand up if u hate cockney' moment was classic. Good day out and impressed by Sodje and Racon. Shelvey also had a good game.
  • Surely the best song was our " your ground's too big for you" jibe while pointing at the closed shelf.

Excellent game for Sam Sodje in v difficuilt conditions.
  • Spainboy, comment on TV was that Beckford goes missing in big games - mentioned Millwall semi and Liverpool (I would think Liverpool could be understandable) - I think it was the world expert Claridge, what is the Leeds view on this? Given his record of scoring did anyone decent come in for him during the summer?

Oh dear. I think I won't mention that to his sister when I see her at work tomorrow.

He does. Not sure why because he is capable of scoring against better teams. He was non existant in the second half on saturday and no one can put their finger on it. Maybe this is a big question mark on why no big teams have come in for him. Offers did come in but the clubs were unnamed. I heard WBA was one of them and no figure was mentioned. I guess he does think he is bigger than what he is but to be fair he has popped up and scored many a time when we have been poor in the past (just not on sat). He is still a vital member as he is guaranteed to score over 20 in this league but just a bit annoying on big occasions!!
  • decent solid performance, much needed after the Colchester fiasco. If we can take six from the next two home games that would really be en excellant start. Thought Racon was quite effective out wide left. Sodje, for first game of the season was immense, Eliiott two good saves, Dailly solid but Richardson my MOM. Good noise from our end too.
  • Sodje was excellent as was Richardson who was my MOTM. Great going forward and defensively. Thought Spring did well once he settled. Dailly and Youga both also did well.

Frustrating point in that I think we were the better side with the ball. Didn't really carve out many chances. I thought at the start of the second half we would genuinely score 2 or 3 because of the wind, and to start with we weren't allowing Leeds to get out of their own half which had happened to us at the start of the first half. We dealt with it well in the first 45 and thought Mcleod could have been dangerous with the ball over the top as Leeds tried to do with Beckford (which worked once). Nearly worked for ourselves. Racon and Mcleod both had clear sights of goal.

I thought Leeds were average and played long ball for the majority of the game with and without Becchio. Granted I'm sure they've played better this season, but then thats because they haven't played anyone las good as us before. Thought Beckford was average as well. In my opinion the reason he scores so many goals in this division is because he's playing for a decent team like Leeds and has about 300 shots every game from ridiculous positons.

Good point away, but a good sign that a few are frustrated that we didn't get all three away at the league leaders.

It took Ronaldo a longtime to score goals in the big games so he may get there eventually.
