Rob Elliot signs new contract

edited September 2009 in General Charlton
great news IMO. From the OS

Rob Elliot has signed a new contract that will keep him with the club until 2012, the Addicks announced on Friday.

The Charlton number one becomes the second talented youngster to commit himself to the club by signing an extended contract just a fortnight after Jonjo Shelvey.

And manager Phil Parkinson paid tribute to the goalkeeper's work ethic, on and off the pitch.

"Obviously, we want to keep our best young players, and with Robbie in the last year of his contract we were keen to agree a new deal with him, so we're delighted with his new contract,” said Phil.

"It's another step on the ladder for Robbie as a goalkeeper, in terms of where he wants to go with his career, and he wants to be part of the club progressing forward. We've got a lot of work ahead of us - and so has Robbie - to get where we want to be, but we are making progress and this new contract is a positive sign of that.”

Elliot has been ever-present in 2009/10 and has kept four clean sheets in the opening seven league games to help the Addicks storm to the summit of League One.

He has played a key role in the club's best ever start to a season, and has now amassed 35 games for the club since making his debut in April 2007.

"Robbie has played very well this season, so he deserves a new contract, but there has been a lot of work all over the summer and last season with him as well,” added Parkinson. "Our goalkeeping coach, Andy Woodman, and the sports science team have worked hard with him, but that desire has to come from within, and you have to want to put in the work on the training pitch and in the gym.

"Contracts in football shouldn't be given out easily; they should be a reward for people who have earned them, and Robbie is certainly in that category. Now he's got to focus again and make sure he plays his part in taking the club back to where it should be.”

Elliot, who was given the number one jersey at the start of the season, was born in Greenwich and is a boyhood Charlton fan.

The goalkeeper is also one of 11 Addicks players who have come from the youth ranks to make their first-team debut for the club since May 2007.

And the latest news, coming less than two weeks after Shelvey put pen to paper on a new deal, delighted football club board chairman Richard Murray.

"This is more good news for the club, and again demonstrates the importance of our academy, which is continuing to reap rewards,” he said. "It gives everyone great pleasure to see a homegrown player in the first team and playing well, and I know the fans really identify with Robbie.

"We're really pleased he has committed himself to the club he loves, and let's hope the team can continue the recent good form and make it a successful season.”

  • Very well deserved, he has really improved this season.
  • "Bromley Bromley's Number 1

More good news. Could be the player to break Bartram's appearance record.
  • definitely deserved, i can see him being with us his whole career all being well
  • Cracking news. I have to say, I've been very impressed with Robbie this season. I wasn't totally sold on him to begin with, but the weight he's lost seems to have taken his shot stopping up a notch and , a couple of slightly flapped-at-crosses aside, he's been very solid and has made some key saves at key times (like Deano used to). It's early days, but I think he can go on to play Premiership football if he keeps working hard, hopefully it might be with us.

I certainly think he's already a better goalkeeper than Weaver ever was for us.
  • Agree with Exiled, he has been superb this season and even though he has flapped at a couple of crosses, at least he is coming for them and trying to command his box. Personally I was a fan of Weavers but last year he was seriosuly lacking confidence and form and the decision to bring Elliot in was arguably Parky's first great bit of management for us. Thought Elliot was blameless last season, he just had a an awful defence in front of him and was left exposed to many times (watfords opener at Valley springs to mind).
Am well pleased he has got a new deal as he is one of best in league 1 and probably good enough for most championship sides, also at 22/23 he can only get better.
    Possible Ireland keeper in future?
  • Top man.....best signing of the season IMO, he has got himself in great shape during the pre season, and is twice the player he was a season ago

Happy with this, really like the lad, good keeper as well.
  • Great news!

You can see that he really wants to play for us and we need players like that.
  • he's improving all the time ....as a doubter of him as a keeper i'm slowly coming round to him ... just need to stop the amateurish flapping and maybe there's a decent keeper lurking

shows an enthusiasm for the game which is great to see and long may it continue

  • Great to see a young fan being brought through the ranks and sign a new contract. Can also see him spending his career here as long as we go in the right direction, a future 'Mr Charlton'.

    South
  • What Bromley South ?
  • As a former keeper myself I have always studied our keepers quite closely. I felt last season his inexperience showed a little too often as we conceded a lot of 'nothing' goals where nobody specifically was at fault it was just general ineptitude - but where a top quality keeper might have kept the ball out. This season he seems a little calmer and is making better decisions (last week in the opening minutes a perfect example - last year he'd spread himself but get beaten whereas this time round he made the save AND got to the rebound)
    it's small margins really

his distribution is top notch from hands and feet and as long as he continues to progress I think it likely hell be our keeper for many years to come as I can't see his head being turned by another club!

Congratulations on your new deal Rob - long may it continue

    South

Odd, I'd never have thought you'd pick that one.
  • Robbies grin must be bigger than ever! To realise your dream to play for club you support must be amazing but then to be rewarded by regular first team action & capped by a long term contract, he must be pinching himself! Really happy. Robbie you are a fine young man x

  • Good lad...

He's improving with every game and will only get better.

Think he's already at the decent keeper stage. If he keeps up the shot stopping (there have been two or three blinding saves this season) and distribution and then adds a really solid ability to deal with crosses he'll be a very good keeper.

As others have said though, at least he's coming and trying to command his area. I always think better a bad decision, with goalies, than no decision at all. If the back 4 know he's coming they can position themselves accordingly. Likewise if they know he's not coming (as with Deano). The worst situation is someone like Weaver used to be who comes for some, stays for others but had virtually zero judgement about which ones to do which to. It just creates confusion throughout the whole defence.
  • Fair play to him for grafting and putting in a shift.

Considering the mess that was around him last year and for him to put in hard work and have the desire to be No.1 he deserves the reward of the contract.

He is a great example to everyone else in the club. I hope players like Basey, as an example, take note.
  • To be fair, when I saw Basey at Hereford I thought he'd shed a few pounds and looked quicker across the turf for it - not exactly Usain Bolt but definitely quicker than he looked last season.
  • Very good news, seems totally committed and passionate. Only downside is the fact he must be colour blind - why else would he choose to play in hideous orange shirt?
  • I found it strange that he was playing when Darren Randolph seemed so highly rated by both the Charlton and Ireland setups. Everything had been a bit quiet on Rob Elliot. But what a blinding keeper he's turned out to be. Has the potential to go on to be a Valley legend, especially considering he's a fan himself.

    Well done Rob.

Great news. I like him, even at a young age for a 'keeper he seems reliable, rather than just being a decent shot stopper. Like others have said, his distribution is good, he's not perfect when getting crosses but that'll improve with experience.

He's done so well when you realise Randolph was ahead of him.

Anyone know what's going on with him playing for Ireland? He played a few games at youth level, but that was years ago. Randolph more recently was in the Ireland full squad when they played San Marino.

    Explained on the OS-
In addition to his fine displays, Charlton fans couldn't have failed to notice Elliot this season, with the shot-stopper donning the club's new 'clementine' goalkeeper top on a regular basis.

The 23-year-old admitted: "It's not to everyone's tastes, but I had to wear it against Wycombe Wanderers on the first day of the season and we won, so I kept with it.

"It's a bit different but I think it could have psychological benefits too; maybe it puts people off if they see a big flash of orange coming at them when they're trying to score! Whatever it is, it's working so I'll stick with it."
  • [cite]Posted By: kimbo[/cite]Very good news, seems totally committed and passionate. Only downside is the fact he must be colour blind - why else would he choose to play in hideous orange shirt?
I was assuming it was a psychological ploy to encourage him to keep the weight off. Orange is not a good colour for the more rotund of us, unless you don't mind resembling a citrus fruit.
  • Very good news. Now, let's hope he plays every game for the rest of the season, but doesn't have to touch the ball.
  • Brilliant news, he is still learning his trade but as we know CAFC through and through what a thrill it must be for him to gee up the fans, strawberry blonde your having a laugh!!!! (Hartlepool chant!)
