  • Honestly I never wanted him out I’ve always wanted to give him a chance from the start of a season not half way through one.

I was shocked he was appointed on the back of no wins, I said nobody could do worse than him last season, I suggested a goat could have had the same impact on results last season, I roundly criticised some of his reported utterences. I am very conscious we got relegated on his watch, and if we get promoted we're back where we started.
I have said we now must judge him on results, and praised some decisions, and some things like watching the opposition before we play them. he is proving to me that he is capable of making decent decisions, and managing a football team.
In the context of the times we wrote I don't really regret the opinions i expressed, and even now it is early days.
Throughout all I have never ever denied he is a decent person. On Saturday I heard from a person of impeccable judgement that Parkinson really is a lovely bloke, and I believe that to be true. It was put to me that Parkinson is by far the most personable and pleasant manager we have had in recent decades, he is a nice bloke. I was ticked off because I always refer to him as 'Philip', a rather distant and distainful name to use.
I now feel much more at ease with Parkinson as our manager, and I suppose I am glad he is a lovely man and not a Warnock type, I will have to get used to writing Parkinson, even Phil Parkinson, and I hope I can find myself calling him 'Parky' one day.
Heres the thing, I secretly hope that Charlton Athletic will be the first club to go div 3, div 2, to div 1 TWICE! I now hope that Phil Parkinson can do that, because if he can then he will become as much of a legend as Seed, Lawrence and Curbishley.
  • I told you so ;-)
  • just a thought but with our financial position being what it is, i can see if he carries this on for a few months, as soon as the top tier managers start to get the boot, the chairman may get a knock on his door. then what?
  • [cite]Posted By: WSS[/cite]Yeah, jesus - lets not play the "I told you so" game.

We have won 6 games on the trot - our best ever start. Lets be a united fan base, get behind the team and try to extend that record for as long as we can.

If we had lost 3/4 of the first games, everyone that wanted Parky out would have played the "I told you so" game...

Anyway lets see how we're doing in a few months time. Towards the end of last season I had a feeling he could do well for us and he's started to show why. In the end we all want him to take us back up, including anyone that still isn't convinced.

I don't think he's a manager that can come in and make an instant impact, which is what we needed when Pardew went. But he can build a squad, a good team over time, and the summer gave him that opportunity.
  • Four big differences between this year and last year.

1] The centre-halves. Dailly is class, a far better and calmer influence than Mark Hudson and Llera looks much more solid than many of the clowns who played there last year for us.

2] The midfield triangle of Semedo, Racon and Shelvey is very, very good and had they played together in the CCC last season then we would not have gone down. Don't forget that last year we had the likes of Holland and Sharon Ambrose still playing.

3] We are playing at a lower-level, there is clearly as big a gap between the CCC and League One as there is between the CCC and Premiership in terms of quality.

4] Parkinson had a full pre-season to gel the squad he wanted and to get rid of all the crap that Pardew left behind, he simply could not do that last November.
  • We do like to rake over old ground sometimes. Maybe it goes with the territory.

Parky is lucky to have survived probably because they couldn't afford anybody else. He's ridden his luck well

Murray has been great for Charlton, f*cked up big-time when Curbs left, was stiffed by Pardew, but has stuck in there with the other directors and hopefully are steering the club away from the rocks, either in their own boat or in a shiney new one skippered by somebody else.

I wouldn't have missed the ride though for anything and I still give Murray (and others) great credit for what has been achieved. Look at the quality of our homegrown players, delivered by an academy created under Murray's stewardship.
  • fairplay to parky long may it continue but i fear for when injuries and suspensions hit us cos i'm not convinced the depth is there but time will tell ...unchanged team for the next 40 league games should do it!!
  • I thought there should have been a total clearout when Pardew went and someone like Ince brought in. Fortunate as things have turned that this didn't happen (still early days but...).

A mate of mine lives next door to Mark Seagraves (us old timers will remember him playing along side Sam Alladyce at Bolton in the old First & second Division). He told my mate that Parky was the best player he had ever come up against, great footballing brain and sure to be a top manager. Let's hope he is right!

I agree and would add :-

    5) We have a decent right back now. Instead of a revolving door of crap last season.

  • All five good points.

No doubt changes to his staff have helped as well, Nick Davies coming in to help with the fitness side and Tim Breacker as his assistant. Wouldn't be surprised if he's made changes to who we've got scouting for us now as well.
  • I was wrong. Mrs M has been dishing up humble pie in various forms (baked, steamed, curried, etc) for a while now. The Sunday Times said , ...."Brentford could not handle the sheer volume of 'joie de vivre' thrown at them" and for the second goal "....the home side enjoyed a passage of play that boasted accurate, intelligent and often daring passing...". How much of all that is down to the Parky effect, who knows, but it'll do for me!
  • seeing as it's getting a bit weird
  • Lmao now even I think he should walk in the next 2/3 weeks!
  • haha i made a post wanting him out when we lost to sheff wed how wrong can i be to see us facing the same team again and tbh would like to see a change :D

Phil brown would be my ideal replacement but ...
