The amount of atmosphere you want your youngun exposed/subjected to is the the key. I was brought up on Glasgow terraces and, with hindsight, it taught me some lessons and some not so good stuff. To a certain extent - though I whined to be allowed to go to the games I kind of think I should have gone elsewhere in the ground (though it was "compact", although to be fair anyplace in the Valley is comparably tame. There will be no fighting (which was the weekly fare for us and I'm sure Charlton fans in North in the 70s). But the aggressiveness of the chavs and the chanting is a different thing. Personally, I'd restrict kids to the East or West stand where they're likely to pick up on a bit less atmos and language. There's a family area; use it in the first instance. If your boy grows to enjoy the game and club we love let him pick where he wants to be.
