Yes, nice words, WIWLB. (although a bit of an insult to Lennie to say we've never seen that sort of passion from a Charlton manager before). But didn't you realise there's an embargo on praising our current manager until after the embargoed takeover has been completed on its embaroged date sometime in the embargoed future?
[cite]Posted By: Ketman[/cite]Too early to tell if we are just playing weak opposition or if we are genuinely contenders this year. I'll reserve judgement on Parky until we play someone like Leeds or a real Derby match Like Millwall where calm minds will prevail.
Two losses in a row to third division dross and the wolves will be baying for his blood again.
I'd give him a thumbs up so far, but much too early to be jumping on any bandwaggon.
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!
[cite]Posted By: Northern_Monkey[/cite]A pretty horendous season left things very flat at the valley last year. Pards out and Parky stepped up. No real change in fortune and the players probably thought that he was gone as much as we all did. With a difficult close season in terms of the takeover speculation putting Parky in the dark it seems he's concocted a plan to blast the pants off the oppostition in league one with some shrewd free transfers. He seems to be doing everything right at the moment, even winning games. He charms the ladies in Ireland, shows some cheek to opposition managers to keep them away from our players, speaks sensibly and frankly, has the players playing for him, and has come out of these 1st 3 games looking like a real leader. I woke up this morning full of optimism and confidence - this can only lead to trouble on Saturday...
i like it when i read something positive on this site.
Parky has done pretty much everything he could to show us that he is the right man for the job and in difficult circumstances.
He may not literally be a hero, it may just have been a nice little phrase used for the title of the thread, it doesn't really matter. 3 wins out of 3 and people moan the opposition weren't good enough. Some people will always find something to complain about. 100% record, best midfield in the league and joint top - just try and enjoy it. If there's one thing we've learnt it's that things can always get worse, so enjoy success while you're having it.
[cite]Posted By: allez les addicks[/cite]In our current situation there's noone I'd rather have. At the end of the day, even if he was doing badly we wouldn't sack him because we can't afford to, BUT saying that I am starting to feel more comfortable having him in charge. All last season we were saying we weren't physical enough and lacked leadership on the pitch but in Burton, llera, Richardson, and dailly he's addressed that. He speaks well in the press (eg the gillingham interview where he's trying to talk up the price), I'm just concerned about the back up players. Our starting team is arguably one of the best in the league but when we get 1 or 2 injuries, we could be in trouble. That's not his fault though so we can't blame him for that! So all in all good start to the season, however by no means a hero. Encouraging yes, and certainly better than pardew, dowie, and reed; but not quite a hero.
completely agree with this, saves me typing anything
Though I never thought I would , I agree too. There was a moment today when, following a ludicrous offside decision against us, Parky had an animated discussion with the fourth official and it looked like he had to be restrained from sticking one on the linesman concerned! Last season he wouldn't have bothered, would have just carried on watching, arms folded, and looking like he had a great weight on his shoulders. Today he showed he cares: it's his team and at this level he knows what's required to win games: everyone knowing their job and doing it to the best of their ability. Hopefully they'll be some recruiting, both as cover and to increase competition for places, but as things stand, Parky's the man!
Still have to say that I have my doubts about the mans managerial ability,but has done a decent job this year, in what is after all I difficult position. No way a hero !. Been impressed with his quite getting on with things and deserves at least respect for that. See how he deals with the transfer deadline, keeping the players and the takeover before I am convinced that he is up to the job for Charlton.I am not warming to him , but out of the freezer and into the fridge stage if you get the idea!
I think there have been many positives to the start of the season.
Team spirit
Consistent team selection
Solid back 4
Some excellent passing and movement
Absence of loanees
But I would rather wait until we have played 10 matches before getting too excited. And all 4 teams we have played so far are in the bottom half of the league.
However more than anything I think Parky has acted with dignity and strength during a very difficult period in the clubs history and I think he has earned an element of respect for the way hes has conducted himself from many as a result, myself included.
Hero.... dont make me laugh the guy aint got a clue about tactics. The reason Bailey scored so many goals last season was because he played through the middle and got onto crosses coming in from the wingers not by playing on the left. Also playing one forward is a joke especially at home no matter who we play, no disrespect to burton but he aint the type of striker who gets you out your seat much plus after an hour the legs go so what does parky do runs him into the ground.

No disrespect to Colchester, but you don't get a club like that promoted out of this division without a good grasp of tactics. Parkinson knows the game, he knows what he's doing and at the moment he seems to be doing it rather well. Good luck to him.

so you'd rather have one of the midfielders dropped and distrupt the team?

Bailey has averaged a goal every two games since he moved out to the left.
It gives him the opportunity to make runs late into the box without being picked up by defenders. He did it on at least 3 occasions today that I can remember but for whatever reason the ball didn't reach him. It will in other weeks.
[cite]Posted By: UpsandDowns[/cite]Yeah i hope he does well for us why his in charge but the performances aint been that pretty and in fact at times today it was toilet.
Rubbish. The performance was fine and you can't always win in style, especially when it's the third game in 7 days.
Top of the league maximum points, 20 points in front of Pardew and you still moan. Which of the other 23 teams would you prefer to be supporting ?

He did and there were a few times when it did reach him, unfortunately he headed over. Had he got a cross to his feet he probably would have scored.
As for Burton he's playing well and has even got a couple of goals this season, can't ask much more from him. Dickson might get you out your seat more than Burton, but he's far from capable of doing the job Burton is (and we do need someone to do it).
I think it's UpsandDowns that doesn't have a clue about tactics. Bailey's been playing on the left for a while now and apart from his good start with us, that's when we got the best out of him. In the middle he lost confidence, was giving away free kicks and making more mistakes.

This has to be the most ridiculous post I have EVER read on this board! LOL.

Man alive. Give the fella a break. We are TOP OF THE LEAGUE.
You cannot expect Barcelona style football every week in League one FFS. He has a job to do and so far he has done it superbly. Given how low we were at the end of last season and the fact that he was seen as a dead man walking, he quietyl got on and did what needed to be done with great dignity and, although I wanted him gone at the time, he has impressed me enormously and he deserves a lot of credit and for us to get behind him and the team.
Yep. We're playing decent football, won all four league games, top of the league, have kept our better players (so far) and a have hard working team. That's a lot more than most fans were expecting, some would have been happy just to see a team putting in the effort.
The problem with life is that we can't view the future down parallel tracks and then pick the best one.
At the time Parky was appointed "on trial", I thought, makes sense from a succession planning perspective although I wondered if he was part of the problem and not the solution.
At the end of the "trial" phase, I thought he should be replaced as manifestly he hadn't brought about any change in fortunes often associated with a change of manager. I did acknowledge though that this was an expedient decision because my guess was that the Board's hands were tied due to the financial position and therefore they opted for the default position
In the last ten games it was clear that Parky was turning things around, little by little. Some of it was due to players he brought in, some due to injured players like ZZ and Racon becoming available again, but I sensed that he was starting to build an esprit de corps which hadn't been seen, arguably since the Curbs days. My feeling then was that he should be kept on, unless a real "star" manager was available (like Curbs).
That remains my position and indeed the improvements we started to see have carried on in spades this season with real team spirit being demonstrated.

What a load of blox. Also totally inaccurate. Bailey has scored more goals since being pushed to the wing. As for Burton. Playing one up front demands that the striker runs himself into the ground for the cause. Have you ever played or even watched a football match before. Top of the league. 4 wins out of 4 and you pick holes. Un fricking believable.

I know because Charlton skipper Graham Moore was born there.

As proved by an unchanged side in 4 games, maximum 12 points, top of the league and a fine esprit de corps.
That hasn't happened by accident. So credit to Parkinson.
As the Yanks say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
