Parky... from zero to hero?

A pretty horendous season left things very flat at the valley last year. Pards out and Parky stepped up. No real change in fortune and the players probably thought that he was gone as much as we all did. With a difficult close season in terms of the takeover speculation putting Parky in the dark it seems he's concocted a plan to blast the pants off the oppostition in league one with some shrewd free transfers. He seems to be doing everything right at the moment, even winning games. He charms the ladies in Ireland, shows some cheek to opposition managers to keep them away from our players, speaks sensibly and frankly, has the players playing for him, and has come out of these 1st 3 games looking like a real leader. I woke up this morning full of optimism and confidence - this can only lead to trouble on Saturday...

    Eh??!!

    In the middle somewhere.
  • Early days to be using the 'hero' word don't you think.....though he's maybe heading in the right direction at last!
  • Well at least we can now say he's better than Pardew!

In fact , currently 18 pts better. I wonder how the Pardew mouth is explaining away the fact that Soton would still be in the drop zone right now even without their ten point deduction?
  • Well for this week he is a hero. Maybe next week it will be hero to zero. Oh how fickle I am. I just think he's done well with pretty much no support.
  • hang on, three games against pretty average opposition does not make him a hero in any respect. He'll have to get promotion to even get near hero status. Curbs, LL, Rufus, Mendonca etc are heroes, Parky no way - yet. Anyway let's see how we do against one of the bigger guns first eh, Huddersfield, Leeds, MKD et etc before getting carried away. Ok, enjoy the moment as 3 in 3 is certainly a lot, lot more than I expected but at the same time it is far too early to get carried away.
  • Come on Large, let's bask in the glory of back to back wins. Let's indulge ourselves with the knowledge that we are 100% in the league. I know he can't stand on the same level as Curbs et al. but he deserves credit for a perfect league start. Zero to OK didn't rhyme either?

You're probably right. In fact he's had a pretty awful season so far. I mean only nine points from three games. Surely we should have twice that already?

    ;o)

ok, you both want to afford him hero status then go ahead. Why not start a petition to get him knighted ? Me - I'll wait a while before making a judgement.
  • Im just pleased for the man...I would have hated to be in his shoes for the last 4 months....Hope it continues and we do eventually treat him well...

  • In our current situation there's noone I'd rather have. At the end of the day, even if he was doing badly we wouldn't sack him because we can't afford to, BUT saying that I am starting to feel more comfortable having him in charge. All last season we were saying we weren't physical enough and lacked leadership on the pitch but in Burton, llera, Richardson, and dailly he's addressed that. He speaks well in the press (eg the gillingham interview where he's trying to talk up the price), I'm just concerned about the back up players. Our starting team is arguably one of the best in the league but when we get 1 or 2 injuries, we could be in trouble. That's not his fault though so we can't blame him for that! So all in all good start to the season, however by no means a hero. Encouraging yes, and certainly better than pardew, dowie, and reed; but not quite a hero.
  • Agree with Telnotinoz. Didn't want Parkinson in the first place and he was as bad in the championship as I expected. But he's shown a bit of character over the last few months because he's been in a pretty impossible situation.

And Large, given everything that's happened over the last catastrophic three seasons, back-to-back away victories over Hartlepool and Orient is a major achievement! Sign of how far we've fallen, I know. But there we are.

And I'll repeat : Parkinson has at least now shown he's better than Pardew, which I had doubted last season. Really rather looking forward to playing Southampton now (if Pardew is still in charge by then!)

bang on he aint no hero yet he is doing ok even though im not his greatest fan but we needed a good start and so did he and that is exactly wots happened lets hope we can keep it going and you never know i might actually warm to parky ?

I think everyone is concerned about that, and two weeks time the transfer window will be shut so hopefully we'll see some players come in over the next week or so. Just hope none of the important players leave.
  • Never dropped to zero for me and hasn't got to hero status - yet. I'm just pleased for him that after all the abuse he's had to take, he can finally take a modicum of quiet satisfaction, albeit from a lowly position, in the three wins.
  • Bang on TelnotinOz.

How he has held everything together with all the uncertainty and criticsm throughout the close season, I don't know - but credit to the man.

Also to be fair to Parky, his only signings are an extremely limited number of free transfers.
The starting XI is very decent, but as he himself says, he has no strength in depth but as yet is not permitted to do anything about it.

Yet he has still produced a winning side. And they are playing for each other and their manager.

Shades of Lennie Lawrence and Curbs combined.

Seems, if all continues to go reasonably well, we've got ourselves another Charlton-type manager.
And after the Dowie/Pardew years, that's a blessed relief.
  • Agree with much of that, Oggy - but ''shades of Lennie Lawrence and Curbs combined" ? You do your own otherwise excellent argument a diservice by throwing in that kind of hyperbole!
  • Credit to Parky he clearly worked very hard over the summer and though it's early days some of that hard work is paying off.

Okay Nigel, but I meant in attitude and approach - and how he evidently has them playing his way, and with an excellent esprit de corps.

Parky has managed to raise the flag and rally his troops - regardless of all the uncertainty within the club regarding Board and takeover. And with little apparent support. Where many would have shrugged their shoulders and walked away, he's just got on with the job, done it his own way, with dignity and almost in defiance of the situation.

That's what I meant by shades of Lennie and Curbs combined, although of course Curbs got great support from the Board.

The man has conducted himself with dignity, rolled his sleeves up and got on with the job with a welcome lack of bull**** as practised by the silver haired lothario.

Football is played in the mind as much as on the pitch and Pardew destroyed the confidence of a number of our players, the often unjustly maligned Youga amongst them. Parky has painstakingly rebuilt their confidence and these few victories are some well deserved green shoots of reward for his efforts.

Yes it is too early to talk of him in the same breath as Curbs or Lennie but the man inherited one hell of a mess worse probably than anybody realised and he is slowly turning things round.

He deserves some credit for that whether or not you were originally for or against his appointment in succession to Pardew.

Agree with a lot of what you say Len, but lets be fair while it was a mess last season, he now has one of the best if not the best midfields in this division.

Whether he makes the best of it remains to be seen but that isn't something we can judge after 3 games.

I agree 3 games is too early to fully judge but a little bit of credit does not go amiss for the victories thus far.

I don't remember that many people holding back on slagging him off because 3 defeats was too early to judge, they just got stuck in! :-)

No, I didn't say I wanted him to be afforded hero status. But I think he's done a magnificent, almost faultless job since the end of last season. If there were Manager-of-the-Month awards over the Summer, I think he'd be stocking up on the brasso now. And, since the season started, we've done three things already that seemed beyond us last season: we've built up a lead only to see the opposition come close to equalising, but held out for a win (Wycombe); we've pulled into a two-goal lead and shut the game out (Hartlepool); and we've come from behind to take all three points. For all three of those wins, the manager has to take a great deal of credit.

He's the highest-placed manager in the division. Remaining there is surely all we can reasonably hope for this season.
  • Too early to tell if we are just playing weak opposition or if we are genuinely contenders this year. I'll reserve judgement on Parky until we play someone like Leeds or a real Derby match Like Millwall where calm minds will prevail.
  • does parky even have a contract?

i really like him, and hope he stays - he's not a smart arse like dowie/pardew.
  • He certainly ain't nowhere near being a hero yet, but on the contra-side he is far from being a zero as well - so far so good, let's see what hapopens when it gets more challenging.
  • [cite]Posted By: olster[/cite]does parky even have a contract?

    Until summer 2010 yes.
  • His passion after the game last night was something i have never seen in Charlton manager, walking over, clapping the fans, encouraging the players to go the full length of the pitch and clap the fans, one thing is for sure he seems to have brought togethornss within the team, and to prove everyone wrong, he seems up for the fight and thats what we need in a manager, stuck by his guns last night, and proved to the players and the fans that he knows what he is doing. AS far as i am concerned if he is the manager of the club, we should back him all the way, and not get on the blokes back.
He has brought in some good players to date, has had to lose alot, got us to second in the league with maximum points, and at the same time playing some good stuff,
  • Nice summing up WIWLB.
