I don't really see that the two things are mutually exclusive: I'm not saying he did not start things, but I did observe - and I only mentioned it because people often completely miss what happens off the ball - that he plays a lot of the game offside, which means that players on the ball, often have to check back because they can't play a pass through to him. Cue a bunch of idiots yelling at the bloke on the ball.

Anyway, his job is not to do what people shout at him, it's to do what the manager tells him. If the manager understands the basics of the game then surely you have to instruct the striker (particularly if they're on their own) they have to balance closing down the keeper with the need to be available and in-play if we get posession?

I guess I'd just ask you to carefully watch him next time out - and if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. But, IMO, he makes problems for team mates.

He shouldn't be listening to instructions from the fans obviously, the point I'm making is that people complain when he's offside having ran 30 yards to chase down the keeper, and complain when he's onside and hasn't closed down the keeper. Admittedly this is an edge case when there is a large gap between the last line of defence and the keeper, and the keeper is trying to waste time.

I didn't notice many times where he was standing offside and there were opportunities for the midfield to play it through to him. Playing as a lone striker, I guess we're going to be more critical of his game. At the moment though, I think he's doing bloody well.

I have quite a good view for offsides at The Valley, so I'll keep an eye on him on Saturday!
  • In addition, Thierry Henry used to be in an offside position 90% of the time for Arsenal, and we all know the similarities between the two of them.

    :)

As has been said by McLovin above, Burton will be playing to his manager's instructions.

It's quite likely that Burton is told to push up and position himself in an offside position, which keeps defenders deeper, thus creating more space for our midfield to play their passing game ....... but this can be a fine line, if Burton is not alert.

Henri used to generally position himself in an offside position a yard goalside of opposing defenders, stretching and distracting them, and when he read that a pass was imminent he would quickly drop back onside, the ball would be threaded between defenders and Henri would loop back and be haring on to it, with the opposing back 4 caught square and facing the wrong way.

So nothing at all like Deon then? ;)
  • To be fair he is not there to net 20 a season, he is there to hold up play and provide chances to his strike partner which he doesn't really have, maybe Dickson should be give another chance.

But fair play he has taken alot of stick and so far this season has been brilliant, and yes certainly looks like he is enjoying himself as he now feels wanted, unlike last season.

I reckon we're related (my great great great grandfather used to own coffee plantations in Jamacia and it's well known in the family he used to play away when he was visiting them).

    Also we share a surname.

Fair enough it's unlikely, but it's always a nice though.

Yeah, Jolly Robin Burton has got a nice ring to it.

Despite Neon Deon's little flurry of goals in his last few matches, it does sound like your great great great grandfather used to score a bit more often ....?

    :o)
