A really good team effort, everyone worked hard for each other and we deserved the win.1 great save from Elliot, other than that Hartlepool only had 3 good chances on goal. The team can go into the orient game with plenty of confidence and hopefully another win.Good vocal support and an enoyable day.

I enjoyed that, first win we've seen since Preston a couple of years ago.
Nice little ground with an excellent pitch but a strong crosswind.
I was very impressed with the way Charlton defended and then brought the ball out of defence but they got a bit lost having crossed the half way line. The first goal was initially down to Shelvey chasing a lost cause down the left and forcing the defender to put the ball out, from the throw in the ball somehow got to the middle Burton kicked it into the ground (I think) and it bounced over the goalie. The second was a combination of Racon & Sam on the left with Bailey coming in unmarked and putting the ball in the net.
2nd half we had a couple of clear cut chances, Elliott mad a couple of good saves but we tired in the last 20 mins and went deeper and deeper, however Pool weren't good enough to take their chances.

In summary a very good team effort, it is the frst time for a long while I have seen them play as a team, only one player I would criticise and that is Youga -a defensive liability!

  • From a Hartlepool fan:

No complaints about that one. A comfortable fairly even first 20 minutes before we conceded a suicidal first goal. That seemed to throw us off our stride a little; Charlton took advantage and were the better side for much of the remainder of the first half, and for the first 15-20 minutes of the second half. Pools finished strongly and it would have been an interesting finish if we'd scored from one of the chances we created with around 20 to go. But Charlton deserved their win. They look a good solid side and I would expect them to challenge.
  • Johnny H2:

Just got back, very solid performance. Burton played really well up front on his own with the ball sticking and then allowing him to bring the 5 in midfield into the game. Going to bed now as the long day has killed me (age I think!) but very pleasing day.
  • Amos on the wing:

Just got back from hartlepool. Professional performance from the boys. Took our goals well and was in control for much of the game. Back four were very solid (daily, Llera and richardson were excellent). Burton was my MOTM. Held the ball up well and took his goal well also.

Good all round team performance and although Hartlepool had a couple of half chances, we were superior in all areas today. Dailly looks very solid at this level and marshalls the back 4 really well. Eliott getting more confident game by game and was very solid today and made one great save when called upon. Semedo set the tempo early on and broke up a lot of their posession, with Shelvey and Racon tidying up around him. Some good passing football from the Addicks today which created a few other chances which could have made the score a little harder on Hartlepool, although 0-2 reflected a fair scoreline seeing as they gifted Burton the first.

    Elliot -8
    Richardson -6
    Dailly -9
    Llera -7

    Sam -6

  • Pleased for Burton, found it ridiculous when some fans said he had a terrible game against Wycombe (not on here).

Sounds like we carried on from the Wycombe game (well, the first 70 minutes) and great to see us keep a clean sheet.
  • Just back after a thoroughly enjoyable day out. We stopped at the Cleveland Tontine for lunch and the Crab & Lobster at Asenby for supper. Great food & a great game. Everybody played well. Even Youga had a decent 2nd half. Our defence was excellent, the midfield dominated the game & Deon Burton showed what a clever little player he was. Typically while the two Pool CHs jumped around like Zebedee trying to win the ball in a ferocious wind, Deon just waited for it to come down, controlled it and played a number of clever little balls to JJ or Bailey. He also took his goal superbly. Well done to Bailey for powering in the 2nd and that was it. Game over. Now we just need to keep the back line fit, because their replacements are not currently good enough.

  • Elliot - 8 - two great saves, handling excellant esp in the blustery conditions
Richardson - 7 - defended well, got fwd better than Sam
    Dailly - 7 - solid, no nonsense
Llera - 7 - solid, no nonsense, needs to work on passing
Youga - 5 - man's a disaaster waiting to happen, you are the weakest link ......
Sam - 5 - couldn't cross a ball if his life depended on it, doesn't do enough for me, very frustrating to watch
Semedo - 7 - protected the back four, needs to know how to play a fwd pass
Racon - - 7 - some nice touches, needs to be a bit more fwd thinking
Shelvey - 7 - unlucky with a couple of threaded passes that didn't quite come off, unlucky not to score
Bailey - 7 - solid enough performance, not a winger though but then we know that already
Burton - 8 - lively, held the ball up well, worked tirelessly, good at this level

was surprised that Small wasn't on the bench, no sign of Dicko either.

Overall an okay enough performance but Hartlepool were not much, as neither were Wycombe, so a bit too early to get carried away. However, with a few more signings we are only going to get better so a good start. No reason why we won't be there or thereabout's at the end of the season. A bit early to start Parky give us a wave chants imo.
  • another solid performance albeit for 60 mins...........wish we could go on to score a few more & bury teams because soon we will come up against a better side (Orient ?) who will not be afraid to do it to us.
  • Looking back although Burton aint much of a goal theat as in banging them in but as a target man a top player we actually do score and create chances with him being up top more then having 2 other strikers Burton is actually close to contributing possibly the same if not more as Mcleod (1.1m) & Gray (1.5m) have, when we had them 2 up top against Wycombe and Hereford did we score (no) or put a decent amount of pressure on the opposition in the final thrid my opinon is no.

I am starting to become a fan of Burton and his value to the team could be a good signing on a free still and starting to believe in Parky's 4-5-1 with a solid strong midfield defensive to attack is actually the best way to approach this league at present time.

Also makes you think if we can score 2/3 goals per game are we in need of a new striker, If any one or two of Gray, Mcleod, Fleetwood, Dickson leave the money from there wages surely could be used in a area more vital which whould be the Centre Back situation.

I dont think you can ask much more than 3 points and match on match improvement. We played the same neat incisive passing game as we did against Wycombe but the big improvement was the solidity of the defence when Hartlepool had the ball especially in the last fifteen minutes or so. Parky seemed to tuck Youga and Richardson in a bit in the last quarter and looks like he told them to curtail their movement up the pitch hence a much stronger defence. Thought Semedo was superb.

    Elliot - 7
    Richardson - 8
    Dailly - 8
    Llera - 8
    Youga - 6
    Sam - 7
    Semedo - 9
    Racon - 8
    Shelvey - 7
    Bailey - 8
    Burton - 8
  • eliott was solid. the back for coped well with their most difficult opponent being the swirling wind. the midfield bossed the game so much so, that at times it looked like a training session. in particular racon and semedo did very well. burton did very well bringing others into play and took the goal well.
overall, looked a cut above a hartlepool side that i cant help thinking will find it a struggle to stay in this division.
  • as requested.

Shelvey plays quite high up anyway, to me it's really not far off 4-4-2 with Shelvey dropping off, coming deep at times, just no pacey striker push high up looking to run onto the ball.

When people say 4-5-1 is negative, that's really not how we're playing. We're not playing 5 across the middle, hoofing it up (or over the top) to Burton. We're trying to play decent passing football and attack teams.
  • Elliot - 7, couple of great saves, one mix up with CD's
Richardson -7, capable and did his job
Dailly - 8, works well with Llera
Llera -7,, at least one dodgy moment, otherwise capable
Youga -4, defensive liability and I'd rather see Bailey forward than him.
Sam -7, didn't get the best of service, but good when he did, made one goal
Semedo -7 quietly efficient, works well with Racon
Racon - 7, put together some good attacking passes
Shelvey -7, his persistence lead to the 1st goal, seemed to have a free role behind Burton
Bailey - 7, good goal, worked hard and did his captain's bit in the last quarter when the defence was getting too deep.
Burton - 8, good hold up and distribution just needs someone to work off him.

Referee - 8 - used the advantage rule to effect to keep the game flowing, early on talked to players rather than booked them.

Pitch - just what we wanted a good surface to play the ball along the ground.

I was very impressed at the team effort, especially the way the defenders passed the ball out of defence to start an attack but when necessary thumped the ball over the stands!
  • Elliot - 7 Great save but was hardly troubled by Hartlepool!
    Richardson - 7 Decent performance
Dailly - 7 Solid stuff, great new song
Llera - 6 Very effective backwards headers to Elliot, but I can see one of them going wrong for us this season. Should of been better in the air
Youga - 6 Couple of mistakes which nearly costed us
Sam - 7 Good runs at the defences and put in a great cross for Bailey
Semedo - 7 Worked well with Racon and got stuck in
Racon -7 Showed some signs of brillance but a lot of sideways passes
Shelvey - 7 Couple of passes that didn't work out but other then that was pretty solid.
Bailey - 7.5 Got stuck in, took his goal well
Burton - 8 Great goal and held the ball up well.

  • From what I have read and seen a much more solid and better 'team' performance' .

Two league wins ( and a clean sheet) should give us some confidence.I was critical of the team mid week, because I feel that our confidence is fragile, but yes the league is all important, especially at present, although I would have loved a cup run, and a draw against a big team to remember the good times.( okay yes a day out, but christ do we not all deserve something to cheer about)
Well done lads, the question is can they keep it up.....
  • Parky said on the OS last night, that the squad is too thin to sustain a cup run, Ken ..... as was proved when he made 8 changes. Perhaps, that's why Wade Small was signed only on a non-contract basis, as he just happened to be around.

Well, Parky (and whoever may be funding the club) have got just 2 weeks to bring in players to strengthen the squad.

Having said that, our starting 11 looks as good as any in the division. They're playing attractive passing football, and defending with commitment. And that's what we all want to see. Good, positive start *thumbs up*
  • What I saw yesterday was

*players who looked like they enjoyed playing together as a team, celebrated the goals and win with much pleasure. They were up for it, defended solidly, supported each other and moved the ball around well

*players who looked like they wanted to play for PP

*and importantly players who actually had rapport with the supporters, Elliott will be a legend he pulled of a superb one handed reflex save within the 6 yard box from Sweeney

The away end looked full and noisey even though there were just 500 or so of us there, to the players that must create a better impression than being the same number in a vast stand as at eg Barnsley

And finally well doen to PP, he too joined the players on the pitch and rightly took the applause

A great day out, a good game of football
  • Can anyone remember who the sponsor was for the fourth official an extra time? That made me lol.

Would our formation be similar to Liverpool's at the moment with Shelvey playing as Gerrard and Burton playing as Torres?

I'm disappointed I didn't get to this match. I had to drive past as well to get to my sister's in Hexam. Well done to all the travellers!

  • Just a thought but maybe it'll be a good idea to mark Parky out of 10 as well. It'll be interesting to see how people see his role. Motivating from the touch line to substitutions at the right or wrong time
