When should we push the button ?

Now before people jump down my throat I personally unlike many others am all for giving Parky a decent crack of the whip but many would suggest that he`s already had that. My question is when and under what circumstances should we push the button and get rid. Charlton cannot afford to remain in this division one moment longer than necessary and for what it`s worth I feel that if we are not looking like challenging by the end of november then he has had his chance and should be sacked. Negative post on the opening day of the season......Not really. Just something that we need to be mindful of. Hope of course that its all completely unecessary and we are sitting happily at the top but remember that the team manager is the most important position at any football club and Parky needs to prove very quickly that last seasons disaster was not indicative of his management. OK rip this to shreads.

  • This short answer is, can we at least wait until the final whistle has blown before we start planning for Parkies replacement.

The slightly longer answer is that I think or squad is in a slightly better position with this relegation than we were when we were relegated from the Prem. We have some decent young players and have somehow managed not to lose the key players. I think the Club has dropped down to Parky's level.
  • But the real question is what number of games does he have to get it right. 10, 20, One season, Christmas next season ?

And the answer is why ask the question?

When you get married do you say "I'll give it 12 months but if it's not working than I'll ditch them".

If it's not working then by all means start the "parky out" chants but why set an unnecessary and arbitrary number of games before a ball has been kicked.
  • Disagree with the analogy Henry. A marriage is or at least shoud be a life long commitment. Employing a football manager completely different. Imho there is a certain point at which an employee should be judged on their sucesss and I have the feeling that based on the hire / fire ratio of football managers in general most football club chairman agree. My question remains. Not just for Parky but how long is enough to judge whether success will happen or get rid.

Turn the question round. What's his target? Is his target to perform moderately well for the first 20 or 30 games? No. Is his target to get Charlton promoted this season? Yes.

So, as long as he achieves his target, there's no question to answer.

We're currently ten points off the bottom. That's as good as can be expected right now.
  • That has been our problem in recent years. Too many changes of managers in a short period has led to the position we are in. Parkinson needs time to re-build this football club. Sacking managers every 12 months is not the answer. Our successful period as a club came when we gave Lennie and then Curbs the time to build the foundations of a successful club.

4 hours ahead of the first game, its not a question i would even consider.

Its a new start, lets treat it like one.

I agree with that. If we're bottom of the league in four or five games time, playing every game like we did under Les Reed, fair enough. If we're 8th in November but slowly improving he might need more time. We could be 8th in November though after a fantastic start and then go on to lose 6 games in a row.

All about how we're doing overall, not how we're doing after 12 games, or 15 games, or at Christmas. We could be top of the league but not looking convincing, or mid table but actually playing well and it being down to injuries to our best players.

  • Surely its quite simple. At what point (god forbid) would you say enough is enough. 10 games or 10 years ? Why are people afraid to confront a question to which I feel sure everyone has an answer or opinion.
  • Because its a negative question SHG at a time when we should have positivity oozing out of every orrafice of our bodies !

As I said it depends how everything is going.

If Dailly, Bailey, Sam and Shelvey all go off injured today (extreme example I know), it wouldn't be Parkinson's fault if we're only in mid table at the end of the month.

If we're playing well but not picking up points, it's probably right to give him more time.

It's about how we're playing and why, not just results. And it's negative, as AFKA said. It's as if you're waiting for him to fail.
  • Do you know whats really funny. Before the start of last season I started a similar thread about Pardew after the failure of his first full season in charge and got exactly the same sort of response. Funny old lot us supporters but I seem to remember that subsequently there was an awful lot of opinion about when enough was enough. Thankyou and goodnight.

    Common you reds !

It's not just a question of time; there are several other criteria to be taken into account.

    1. Do we have a suitable, available replacement lined up to take over who is guaranteed to make an immediate, sustainable improvement and would be able and willing to take over?
    2. Can we afford the financial implications of terminating a contract?
    3. Is it morally right to renege on a contract in its last year?

If all three of those crieteria are met with water-tight answers, then you can put your finger on "the button". But, before pressing it, ask yourself "when was the last time that sacking a manager stimulated an improvement for Charlton?" Ican't remember that ever happening.

For me, right now, and probably for the whole season ahead, Parky has my full, unconditional backing.
  • Turn it around and we could say if we're playing really well, how long should we give it before we give Parky a new contract?

...and look what a massive improvement we got when we sacked him.

    That is an answer.
  • Curbs has his court date in November..........

Great! Let's plan to send him a season ticket after then, so he can watch us for the rest of the season.

  • Got to say I've been one of his fiercest critics since he took over but as far as I'm concerned it's a new season and a new start for everyone including the players .

With things still officially up in the air about the takeover we still have until the transfer window closes to see where we stand for the coming season so let's be a little bit patient
  • It's no fluke that managers average 18 months in the job - with the popular termination times of Jan and June.

This is because they take the job in January and the season is already dead - so they get one more year and then flop. (Pardew)

    Or

They get the job in Summer, the first season doesn't go to plan (injuries etc) and they get half of the next season before the fans/board become discontent.

As for Parky, he has 1 year left on his contract, and in Nov / Dec his agent will start asking if it is going to be renewed- the board will stall, results will suffer and yet another season will be wasted, or he will leave for another post after Xmas and we will have a chance of doing something.

Say what you like about managers like Sven - but look at his record with England. Then look at Parky's record with us and decide if you would rather pay extra and get an"achiever".

As for negativity about this season on day one.............Please God don't let us go down again or go into administration.
  • [cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]And the answer is why ask the question?

When you get married do you say "I'll give it 12 months but if it's not working than I'll ditch them".

But after 6 months of disaster after disaster surely you would start thinking 'how much can I bare this?'
  • New season, fresh start, sunny afternoon in SE7. Back the manager.
  • If we win today, and yes we should do, and the next few I will still not feel that Parkinson is the right man for the job.

So I am biased and do not have the open mind that others seem prepared to agree to.

As our current chairman once claimed I judge the guy on his 'results', as well as team selection and management.
I agree he has a hard job, but never felt he had the qualities to turn thing's 3 out of 19 home games said it all to me last season.

The main reason why I did not get a season ticket.....
  • I've read that and I'd jump down your throat if I were with you.

Bloody stupid post especially on the first day of the season.

    Agree with Henry and Amos
