[cite]Posted By: The Red Robin[/cite]sorry Scoham! Must read posts more carefully! I think we're all agreed Di Canio was different class!
Yeah, definitely. I always thought of Zheng as being about energy, movement and simple passing. Di Canio is a few levels above anyone we've got when it comes to technical ability and a football brain.
No way was ZZ a tier 3 player ( a bit injury prone amongst other things) so better he goes and we save some money (and hopefully bring in someone else). As has been said just a pity we didn't cash in on him when we could have.
I'm with Oggy on this one.
When he came back into the side he had a calming effect on the midfield. the first game or two, you could read what he was thinking when our midfield constantly booted the ball up in the air. After a couple of games we started to play more "ball to feet", with the players looking for space (and the ball) more positively. I thought he was a class above the rest, and would have made a great mentor for Shelvey.
Can't see Fulham going for him, but one of the newly promoted sides, most definately.

He did his groin playing for China in last years Olympics, which meant he missed the first 10 games of last season, played 15 mins as sub v Palace and a game against Ipswich (which we won), before breaking his foot the very next week in training, which kept him out of the 1st team for 5 months.
Injury prone?
The first was a common injury easily picked up by most players.
The second, was a freak injury that needed patient rehab.
no surprise he wasn't going to play in the 3rd division - he was too good for the Championship
technically superb, very fit and strong for his size plus got forward and scored goals which is a priceless commodity - esp when you have strikers as inept as ours
the sort of quality footballer that for some reason a lot of fans in the UK don't appreciate (bit like Owen Hargreaves) hence the jokers on this thread saying that he was overrated...
I think he'll go to a Championship side if he even stays in England. No way is he Premiership player. Birmingham have made some bad signings though so maybe they'll take him!
oggy is right. kinveachy makes good points too. i also think ZZ doesn't get enough credit for showing the loyalty to come back to us after we were relegated when he had plenty of other options to play at a higher level. some of the criticism he gets amazes me.

Maybe he thought he'd just see out his contract and get a nice big signing on fee somewhere else.
we really need some positive news to stop some of the bitchiness. i thought we had it yesterday but apparently not. oh well indeed.

i mean when he first signed permanently for us straight after our relegation. villa, newcastle and celtic were all said to be interested in him but he chose us saying he had unfinished business and wanted to re-pay our faith in him.
Did anyone ever actually make an offer for him though? Personally, when everyone is fit I wouldn't have him in the starting 11. Bailey, Racon, Shelvey and Holland are all better players.

Oggy Red : I said a "bit" injury prone and what you said simply confirms this! Out for most of last season (when we could have done with him) and on big wages. Not doubting he has talent but absolutely not a tier 3 player especially on his wages. So best he goes. No brainer really.
Plus I suspect it was his injury that stopped West Brom's interest otherwise he would have gone then. IMO it would have been a good deal for us and him.

I heard his agent got greedy, allegedly, and WBA wouldn't pay up. Nothing to do with injuries or our fee which was all agreed.
[cite]Posted By: floydandharvey[/cite]ROTFL at all the people saying he would have stayed if the takeover had gone through. What the crivens are you expecting from this takeover? It isn't going to magically make us start the season in a division ZZ would want to play in. No matter who takes us over, no matter how big their pockets, we're still playing Wycombe on the first day of the season. And if you think the likes of ZZ, Bailey, Shelvey, Holland etc are going to be lining up against the Chairboys you're living in loopyloopland.
take a chill pill F & H.
We already know ZZ won't be playing v Wycombe. I hope Holland has gone. We'll see about Bailey and Shelvey
"I heard his agent got greedy, allegedly, and WBA wouldn't pay up. Nothing to do with injuries or our fee which was all agreed." (Still can't work out the quote transfer!)
Anyway. OK cheers for that Henry. Another bit of bad luck re the Club finances then. No fee and his wages during an injury prone season!
Not as good as some people are saying, not as bad as others suggest.
Just a decent player who is clearly better than League1 and therefore would have shone for us this season. That said his international commitments are a major problem and were the reason he missed so many games for us.
I reckon he will end up at West Brom.
I am most upset about not getting a fee, he is probably worth what we paid - £1.25M and that would have come in very handy.
Another Premiership class player gone, and people are saying "no great loss". How on earth are we ever going to make any progress when all the best players leave the club? We have to somehow arrest this downward spiral and we never will whilst losing players of ZZ's class.
Why also have we become so soft that we have to thank players for there service and wish them well etc, etc. Just for once wouldn't it be nice for a player to say "I love the club and will be doing my very best to help get us promoted". Kins did something similar when we first dropped out of the Premiership! I'm getting a bit sick of players simply jumping ship when the going gets tough.

I think you'll find ZZ did just that, he came back and signed a permanent contract with Charlton prior to our first CCC match.
[cite]Posted By: valleyman[/cite]Shame, decent player.
Not as good as some people are saying, not as bad as others suggest.
I really don't get that. He's clearly not significantly worse or better than Racon, Bailey and Shelvey. All four are at a very similar level. Better than Spring, Holland, Wright and Sinclair though.
Zilch loyalty, like most pro footballers these days. (How refreshing and surprising it was to hear Kevin Nichols speak of his love for Luton!) ZZ spent most of the season getting paid for being in the treatment room. Didn't play particularly well when he came back. Not angst about him going. Was nice to see some Chinese faces in the crowd at the valley though.

I am sorry to see him go. Even more sad because we only really got a taster of his abilities last season due to injury. I have little doubt that were he fit for the whole of last season we would still be in the Championship.
So goodbye ZZ.... a player who always seemed a luxury to me, ability yes, but lightweight and not up to the rigours of the Championship and this forthcoming league. Others were more impressed than myself, never convinced personally. Always of the opinion that his injuries were a little shall we say 'indulgent'. Not a player that I would have in my team, not that he would give a toss anyway........

We would have had to sign him on at least a 2 year contract first.
In fact, we could have done that and before he even played another game, then straightaway flogged him and made a decent profit.
Why am I not running the club?
