  • [cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]If that's accurate, then with the sales of McGinty and Hudson, the club has just brought in £1.5 mill cash,
and saved £X,000's on the wage bill.

Plus we've got £1.5m from the sale of the training ground, £500k loan from Derek Chappell, the season ticket sales (8000-9000?) and potentially a new sponsor.

Wasn't our overdraft facility removed - meaning we can't have a negative balance in the bank?

Wonder what they're going to do with that. Quite a good bit of income. Will we just pay off part of the loans with it?
  • and Holland training at Col U saves his wages too.
  • Where was that?
  • Does anyone know how much it actually costs to run our youth set up each year?

ie if it costs us £500K pa and the McGinty deal effectively covers one years expenses then really going forwards what is the point...

If we are resigned to the fact that all our best 15 year olds will be offered deals by Premier clubs & will then will bugger off...McGinty / Uchechi... (and in fact we all wish them well) then we are unlikely to make any money out of it and the only point will be to produce a few League 1 squad players like Basey when we could probably pick up a similar player on a free anyway from another club.
  • Few more than just Basey though.

    Shelvey
    Elliot
    Randolph
    Solly
    Wright
    Tuna
    Plus others like Mambo
  • £500K for a 15 year old (if correct) is a fantastic deal IMO

Uchechi couldn't get a work permit, seems unlikely he'll sign for a Prem club. Or did he sign for West Ham in the end?

Definitely worth running though, Shelvey, Elliot, Basey have all played quite a few games, Solly, Wright, Randolph, Tuna all started to break through.

Lloyd Sam also came through the youth team. Wagstaff, Arter and Yussuff made their debuts and we'll probably see debuts from Stavrinou, Clark and Mambo at some point.

Not all future internationals, but that's not what it's all about, especially now we are in League One. Pretty sure Solly will get some games and he should do well hopefully.

McGinty is going, but last season some of the other players in his year made their reserve debuts - he wasn't the only one. We also had a couple of players in the England schoolboys squad last season, and one of them was from the year below.
  • Now confirmed on the OS

Charlton will receive compensation from Manchester United after the Premier League champions signed 15-year-old defender Sean McGinty on Friday.

The promising centre-half, who has been with the club for three years, was offered scholarship terms with the Addicks this summer. But with the Red Devils having tracked him for some time, he has opted to switch to Old Trafford.

Although the Republic of Ireland U17 international is not contracted to the Addicks, the two clubs have agreed an undisclosed compensation package, which includes additional fees depending on the player's progress at United.
  • Well sounds like we did what we could, but he just couldn't turn down Man Utd.

Just hope it was a good deal and we have a chance of getting him on loan if he develops well.
  • good deal i think, we are in no position to turn down money for an untried player, if hypothetically these funds mean a first teamer can be retained, eg. Racon... surely we benefit in the short term (which is currently to my mind far far more important than anything long term at this present time)...

the one thing that will get me is if this McGinty kid makes it... he'll be another fantastic product of the United youth system, just as Sturridge, Evans and Richards were at Man City, Defoe was at West Ham etc. etc.

  • hey- just a quick thing re: cashflow

aren't we due the last 5 million of the Darren Bent monrey too???

to my memory it was 5 million up front and 5 million a season for the next 2 seasons......

    am I wrong?

of course, the money has been earmarked..... but if we are talking cash flow...
  • We got all the benty money upfront
  • nah.... you sure???
  • nla is right. That was the deal ie to get it in stages but we factored the money so we got it all up front 2 years ago.

Funny thing about that list of players is Man City got Sturridge from Coventry (and wiki says he was at Villa before that), Ched Evans (didn't know this until I looked) came from Chester when their youth system 'collapsed'), Richards came from Oldham and of course West Ham signed Defoe from us.

He's got a very good chance of making it, but not necessarily at Man Utd. Has a lot of potential so should at least make it as a pro at a good level.
  • Scoham, I think that was ISLS's point...
  • [quote][cite]I can't argue that but maybe I am very unusual but IMO, you come through a clubs youth ranks and you owe them at least a season in their first team, after all we have spotted him, we have trained him and we have given him his opportunity...then he f**ks off to Man Utd first chance.[/quote]

On the other hand, clubs recruite kids, tell them they are going to be the next Beckham and then dump the majority at 17 /18 or on the way. ~Its a mercenary world where the system forces everbody to be looking out for number 1.
  • £500k would sound like a very good deal, although it's a bit ironic that we've probably been able to get more money for a 15-year-old than we would for a fair few of the first team squad...!

Yes but playing for Manchester United is a once in a life-time chance. Surely nobody can dis-agree with that.
He could play two games for the U18's this season and break hes leg and never play again (touch wood never happens) but the point is, you've got to take your chance when it comes. If he had said no to United and as you put it 'owed charlton at least a season' and then things didn't work out for him at Charlton he would always wonder 'what if'. I would anyway.
We're not talking about him going to a club who are just higher up than Charlton such as Aston Villa, Everton, Bolton etc we are talking about Manchester United, the biggest and most well known clubs in the world with arguabley the most successful manager in the game. I say good luck to him.
We've got a first loan option on him anyway so i'm sure we'll see him back in Charlton colours in a couple of years hopefully.
