[cite]Posted By: tom_cafc[/cite]This is going to happen 100%
The club have got a good deal out of it and Sean has got an oppurtunity to play for Manchester United. Good luck to him. He should never be thought of as a JUDAS etc. Playing for Manchester United is a once in a life-time oppurtunity.
Part of the deal involves a first option on him if he was ever to go on loan.
No rubbish here, all fact.
so what's in it for us?
The fee? A couple of loans? Massive appearance based wedge? Lets face it we need the wedge and man ure aren't strapped for cash right now
I'm sorry guys but I can't say too much as these things are often kept in private for a reason. I just thought i'd let everyone know the facts. All I can really say is that Charlton holded out to get a good deal, one that benefits the club and Sean.I know the club were asking for first option on Lee Martin the United winger. Not sure if this was included in the final deal however.
United like to look after thier academy players aswell and I was told the facilities are absolutley first class.

[cite]Posted By: LenGlover[/cite]What is the position with schoolboys (which he must be if he is only 15?
Presumably they can walk and there is not much we can do about it.
Wasn't that the whole problem with Judas Defoe?
He is/was going to be a first year u18 with us this season (same age as Shelvey a year ago).
Come on, it's a bit different than with Defoe. He went to West Ham, are you seriously saying a yong boy at a 3rd Division club shouldn't go to United when they come calling ? Lets be realistic, get the best deal we can and wish him well.
[cite]Posted By: heavenSE7[/cite]Yep he did sign OFFICALLY and good luck to him. Was very professional about it all and was always happy to stay with Charlton if nothing happend.
Apart from posting about it on facebook presumably?
[cite]Posted By: heavenSE7[/cite]Hes 15 years old Sco and just signed for Manchester United infront of Sir Alex Ferguson. Give him a break!
agreed. Good luck to the kid. Stay with Charlton or go to Man Utd to learn from the greatest manager the game has ever seen. Er ? Tough eh. Hope though we have got a decent deal out of it even if we don't see the benefits of that for a few years. Wish him well from me and I hope he has a good career there.
Can't blame him for going, just would have been nice to see him play in our first team like Shelvey has. Big opportunity for him. With 7 subs and us in League One he had a very good chance of getting a few games if he kept developing. At least we've got some decent players coming through, 4 or 5 years ago there was no one in our academy the big clubs were seriously interested in.
Funny really, McGinty to Man utd = everyone says good luck to him...Defoe to West Ham = Public Enemy Number One...
Can't see how Charlton held out for a good deal as is suggested above, at 15 I shouldn't think we had an rights over him whatsoever so how could we 'hold out'. No doubt the deal will be something along the lines of some derisary amount now followed by massive amounts should he do well, however in our financial state we will wipe them all in 6 months for a one off fee of £50K or something!

The big difference between the two is the fact that Charlton have actually got a deal out of this as opposed to nothing. Also the gulf between the clubs has changed dramatically since the Defoe deal.

Do we know this...I havn't seen anything detailing the deal we have got (although havn't really looked too hard), with Defoe I thought we ended up getting somewhere north of £1M off Wet Spam int he end with various clauses..maybe wrong though. As for the gulf in class, I can't argue that but maybe I am very unusual but IMO, you come through a clubs youth ranks and you owe them at least a season in their first team, after all we have spotted him, we have trained him and we have given him his opportunity...then he f**ks off to Man Utd first chance.
Well it's been stated on this thread by someone in the know that we've gotten a good deal so Im going by that. Yes we were awarded north of 1m for Defoe but originaly when he was poached there was no deal in place and we had to go through the football leauge for compo. The difference in attitude is probably down to the fact that a deal has been done and that he hasnt actually just swanned off with no regard for the club. As for owing the club at least a season thats your opinion and I see where your coming from but at that age Im sure he's been heavily advised by parents and people close to him to seek out the place that he can probably develope the most. Remember there's no guarantees he's even gonna make it as a decent pro, sure he's shown potential but the odds are against him.

valleyman...we had to fight tooth and nail to get a half way decent financial deal out of Wet Spam(even then it was pizz poor)...and then it had to be dragged out of them through legislature that went on for months.
Couple that with the underhanded approach and 'backhanders' that went on (the redecorating of DeFoes mothers house at Wet Spams expense for example). The two cases couldn't be more different............can't understand what the hell you're on about chum?

You could also say that had this been three seasons back we'd have been well pizzed off, as we all know where we were then...the reality now is sadly 'very' different.
[cite]Posted By: mart77[/cite]Today's Sun says that Man Utd have signed McGinty for £500k.
Just saw that, good deal in our position really. Hopefully there's a few clauses for apps, caps and a sell on clause. Would be even better if we get first option when he's ready to be loaned out.
Difference from Defoe is there is a huge gap between us and Man Utd. At the time Defoe went, West Ham were an average Prem team, and we were on our way to the Division 1 title. There wasn't a big difference in the size of the clubs. Of course West Ham were bigger, but not that much bigger.

Slightly bigger yes................................... but considerably more slippery!
[cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]If that's accurate, then with the sales of McGinty and Hudson, the club has just brought in £1.5 mill cash,
and saved £X,000's on the wage bill.
Hudson
Ambrose
Toddy
Weaver
are 4 high earners that won't need paying this week.
The club are also not paying the wages of the loanees: Kandol, Ward and Butterfield.
And the young Pro's: Yusseff, Arter and Thomas
We're waiting to hear about Holland, Fortune and ZZ, but that's 7 of last season's 1st team that won't need paying - and only Llera brought in.
That'll help with cashflow.
Good, because presumably our inwards cash flow pre season is nil :-)

You sure its not Lee Sharpe we've been offered?

Yeah fair enough, though sometimes players should be more careful on facebook...

"Go to Man United" he replied like a shot
As he's a Charlton fan what does that tell you about today's youth. Cynical or realistic.
;-)
Yes, most likely that as well : - )
spot on
