Slowest Charlton Player You've Seen

edited July 2009 in General Charlton
BFR mentioning John Pearson on another thread made me think of this as JP could never be described as a greyhound.

Players that I have thought noticeably slow other than him are Grant Basey and going way back Frank Haydock.

There must be more!

  • john barnes
  • El Khalej, Chris White & Butterfield.

Matty Holland is pretty pedestrian these days too - his legs go round like a steam train but he doesn't actually seem to move anywhere!
  • Dave "The Ship" Shipperley...

    Only when he breathed out.
  • Bradley Allen was particularly slow.

When Martyn Waghorn came on loan he reminded me of Bradley, so I guess I have to include him in here as well.

Both had a great touch but whenever they tried to knock the ball past a defender they were too slow to get on the end of it. Defenders had time to turn before starting to chase after them, yet they'd still get to the ball first.
  • Gotta be Phil Chapple...He always looked like he was running on the spot

  • Ralph Milne or Steve Thompson
  • Funny Waghorn was mentioned, I remember after the Derby game Parkinson said how we used his pace.

Don't remember much of John Barnes now but I can imagine.

I'd agree with the more recent ones, JFH, Holland and Basey lacked that bit of pace that they could have done with. Andy Gray isn't much better either.
  • Dick Tydeman comes to mind - great on the ball but slow as a boat.

Beat me to it! His shadow was faster than him!
  • Me in my Charlton shirt down greenwich park.
  • John Robinson ....
  • It's a bit unfair to name players in their mid-30's when they were about to be given last rites as footballers - Barnes and
JF Piggybank were sharp and pacy enough in their prime.

Although admittedly both you and I could walk faster than they could run, by the time they signed for Charlton,
  • Hudson how many players ghosted in behind him hurry up and sign him cardif
  • Ralph Milne in his own words

""You can teach someone a bit of skill and how to pass a ball but it is impossible to teach pace. That's what I had and it terrified the best defenders in the land."

    I will post link

  • Dear old Phil Chapple, his legs moved like a cheetah, yet he covered the ground like a snail.

    Bollox to you too!
  • Mark Bright, used to look like he was running in quick sand.
  • Jorge Costa- but he was awesome otherwise!
  • There is not even the possibility of my being wrong on this one. Harry Cripps. Made Sailor Browns (RIP) "nautical gait" look like Linford Christie.
  • The one and only Ralph'Get down the pub and give up slower'Milne.

phil chapple chasing a striker = bob willis coming into bowl (probably as he would do now)
  • LEABURN although certainly remember seeing Chapple skinned a few times
  • [cite]Posted By: CHG[/cite]Mark Bright, used to look like he was running in quick sand.

Yeah, but he was 36 or 37 by the time he signed for Charlton.
You don't find many 36 year old whippets around.

    And I speak from experience.
