I always thought the same even when he was with us, never came off his line, didn't get a hand to goals that were close to him. Mind you, I thought Deano should have come for more crosses. I think in recent years the policy of bringing everyone back has given goalies less room to manouvre in the six-yard area.
My all time favourite was Sasa, for all his faults. I remember his debut, had never heard of him before but was amazed by this huge guy warming up. A forward was put through on goal early on for a 50/50 with Illic and you could see him pull up sharpish when Sasa dashed from his line. None of the above were great kickers, but Sasa tried to command his box which snuffed out potential chances, even if he occasionally got it wrong.
[cite]Posted By: ShootersHillGuru[/cite]Charlie was a great charecter and crowd favourite but was not in the same league as either Bolder or Keily.
But still my favourite SHG
And mine.
Sir Charlie Wright to all you kiddies and Johnny Come Lateleys, hee hee.
Thing is all these keepers mentioned were all really good keepers, but they had differing strengths.
Nicky Johns, fantastic reflexes and spectacular shot stopper, but then Bob Bolder had perhaps better positional sense so that he made fewer spectacular saves but more routine stuff - not that Bolder couldn't pull off the world class blinding save, just that often he didn't need to do it. Much like Gordon Banks compared to the more acrobatic Peter Bonetti (sorry giving my age away there).
So in that comparison, Bolder - to me, at least - was the more dependable keeper. But on his day, Nicky Johns saves could often be more breathtaking.
Same when I think of Deano ...... crosses - not really so strong on crosses was he? Positionally he was generally okay but sometimes suspect. But wow, what a shot stopper!
That was his strength, much like Nicky Johns and even dear old Sir Charlie Wright.
And the other difference was compared with most star Charlton keepers, Deano did his stuff for us year after year in the Prem, bar the first season. Nicky Johns only had one top flight season, and Bolder three.

What Oggy said.
In summary Nicky Johns was probably capable of making the most spectacular saves, Bolder was on a par with Deano for dependability but Deano did for us at the top level for longer so shades it in my opinion.
Charlie Wright was better than anything that followed Bartam (although I didn't see Willie Duff) and a great character but the other 3 were better keepers in my view.
Ilic had a great purple patch but couldn't sustain it. I reckon that injury against Chelsea effectively finished him at the top level.
I also agree that Jeff Wood was underrated and did well following Graham Tutt who, but for his tragic injury, might have been the best of the lot.
Bob Bolder was different gravy IMHO. He was one of the bravest keepers I have ever seen and nobody really replaced him adequately until Deano came to the club - that says a lot.

Precisely my view Len.
Lets spare a thought for one or two others.
Sasa Illic - one inspired period upto the play off final. All downhill thereafter
Mike Salmon was a more than averagely good keeper
Graham Tutt could have been the greatest ever sadly career curtailed by injury
Jeff Wood - Vastly under-rated but consistant keeper
John Dunn - Good handling with the occasional rush of blood
Tony Burns - threw the ball as far as most could kick it (Robbie Elliott reminds me of him)

I saw that absolute quality joke, I pished myself, and a quality keeper too even at the age of 38 in the PL. Would love him at CAFC next season.
Agreed Spankie, but don't think Rob has done to badly has he ?
Oh no, Eliot has done very well in a very challenging season and playing behind an utterly useless back four for 95% of the season. He's a Charlton fan and only 23 so I say give him the number one jersey and back him especially if Weaver, as expected, moves on. Just saying Deano could still easily do a job at Championship level so would be more than handy in League One...

Both great keepers, different styles.
