At the time I thought it was right, felt he had passed his best, but he then went on to Pompey and WBA raising questions about how we failed to motivate him at the end.
I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that he was the best keeper I ever saw in a Charlton shirt. Some on here were saying that Carson was better, frankly that was a joke and an insult to Deano who year after year was a top performer whereas Carson was promising but no more than that. Yes Deano had the odd dip, what 'keeper doesn't, but he was such a solid physical presence. How many games did he win for us by keeping them at bay. Great to see he back in the big time. I'd love to see he back at the Valley.
A friend of mine (a Gooner I'm sad to say) met him a corporate race day. He asked for Deano's autograph for me and then got chatting about footy in general, which carried on for a good while apparently. Said he was as nice a guy as you could wish to meet.
Have still got that betting slip signed 'All the best Murph'. Top man.
[quote][cite]Posted By: guinnessaddick[/cite]He got MOM on MOTD. Did you see him pick up the flag when the lino went down, he waved it and then signalled for a sub.[/quote]
Yes reminded me of the time Gascoigne picked up the referees dropped yellow card and carded the ref.only for the miserable ref to really card Gascoigne.
Deano's son is a keeper to, attached to Gillingham, but on loan to Leamington, which is blogged by Wyn Grant.

All about opinions and different era's of course but for me I'd put both Bob Bolder and Nicky Johns in front of Deano. Better all round keepers IMO. Personally I think in the end he went at the right time for both parties and to be fair he didn't go on to play too much Premiership football after leaving us did he?

I think Bob Bolder would come out just ahead of Deano in my book but not Nicky Johns.
I recall Bolder singlehandedly winning us a point in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford, that was the finest goalkeeping display I have ever Seen
I would say Deano would be the finest goalkeeper that I have seen in a Charlton shirt and I started going in 1961. If Deano had better kicking and all round distribution I have no doubt a bigger club than Charlton would have taken him on. It was his one significant weakness imho.

I saw that absolute quality joke, I pished myself, and a quality keeper too even at the age of 38 in the PL. Would love him at CAFC next season.

There's another great story - when Roy Keane walked out of an Irish team meeting at the 2002 WC there was understandably a bit of a silence, broken by Dean offering to replace Roy Keane as Ireland's defensive midfield hardman.

As you say, it's all about opinions. Bob Bolder was a great keeper and so was Nicky Johns but neither were considered to be the best around amongst their contemporaries. Deano was mentioned often, by serious pundits, as arguably the best around in the Premier League. I remember game after game where his abilities kept clean sheets. He was a modern keeper who didn't always come for the ball at corners. I don't think it was that he couldn't, it was more that he worked on percentages and his belief was that he had a better chance of keeping the ball out if he let defenders do that job.
Bob Bolder, I would have just below Deano, followed by Nicky Johns. Remember Bolder replaced Johns and was seen as the more solid. Johns was a real agile keeper who's shot stopping ability was excellent. He was just a bit flaky postionally in my view.
I agree about Jeff Wood, who made the best save I have ever seen by a Charlton Keeper. There isn't much between Bolder and Deano. Deano shades it for me. His dedication, his single-mindedness, and above all his shear determination to keep it out just wins it.
I think I'd put Deano ahead of Bob Bolder on the grounds that he was perhaps a bit more versatile and other than one season, which ended in promotion, all his games for us were in the premiership and in front of him he had a bloody good defence. A significant number of Bolder's games were in division two and to be fair not all the back four in front of him in that era were of the same class. Both though wore the shirt with pride and were consumate professionals.
[cite]Posted By: ChicagoAddick[/cite]Bing, I would put Bobby Bolder just ahead of Deano. Close though, with Nicky Johns 3rd. Then Carson and Jeff Wood who was very under-rated.
Where does Sasa Illic stand in the pantheon of great Charlton keepers? (And Steve Brown...).
Sasa Illic was an amazing, though sometimes unpredictable, reflex shot stopper. After he recieved a blow to the head in one game, he was never the same again.
Steve Brown, epic save in 4-3 win at Villa nine years ago, kept us in the Prem for another week. Probably the best non goalkeeper goal keeper ever!
Deano was a legend for us, in my view. However, I think this was partly due to his raport with us fans, rather than his ability as a keeper. He was a superb shotstopper but, as mentioned above, positioning was a bit iffy at times, as was his infamous kicking ability and his not coming out for crosses...

And guess what- Deano's playing a blinder- well for the first 10 mins anyway...
Yeah heard that, thought he came across superbly.

DEANO was quality!

Yeah Chris Kiely, he was here as a schoolboy but we let him go.
